Also I believe it's oil pressure codes that are thrown when the chain stretches. My objective is to reseal the cam towers but the timing chains and tensioners are a while I'm in there type of repair. Could you imagine doing the cam tower reseal then a month later you get faults for the timing chain?

I'd also turn the engine untill all the timing marks hit where they line up on the cam sprockets and crank before disassembly and then it's just remove and install. I don't think it'll be that bad. Just alot of stuff to remove and reinstall. Leave the cams in the cam towers and never break the bolts loose that hold the cam in the tower. After getting everything back together turn the engine 28 times and assure the marks hit again. 28 turns again to verify. Not something you want to miss. If I take my time I got this. Does anyone know if the smaller chain between the 2 cams will come off without removing the vvti sprockets from the cams? It has its own tensioner and if you can get that chain to clear the cam sprockets then those sprockets will not even be removed from the end of the cam. The intake sprocket is huge though as it's what controls the variable valve timing. I'll ask this question to an experienced Toyota tech and hopefully he will say they can stay in place. I should have an answer sometime this week.

I don't think you'll be able to go 28 turns if something is off.

Not sure yet as I've not tore into it. Definitely won't be able to turn it 28 turns if it's not in time.

I’ve seen the video on the timing chain setup and the tensioner. Just reading this thread gives me anxiety thinking about making sure everything is buttoned up correctly. OP good luck on the process and keep us posted. :hattip:

    It's a 22mm or 7/8 socket for the 4.7L.

60B0DB91-9531-4516-A5D0-B75E987DA80A.jpg Get one of these they work amazing without the crank pulley holding tool , I don’t own this one but I bought one for my 06 ,v6 Honda accord, after multiple attempts with a regular impact socket and a good impact gun , and a broken breaker bar . This socket zipped the bolt right off .

Thanks for the good luck wishes. I spoke with my source from Toyota who has done numerous cam tower reseal jobs. The rear chains will not clear the cam sprockets. He advised to replace the tensioners at a bare minimum. He has seen several failures on low mileage trucks. He also said he doesn't blame me for wanting to replace the timing chain set. It's good to have him just a phone call away. Definitely makes me more comfortable about doing this job.

Working on the jeep right now. Soon as I get it road worthy I'll tear into the Tundra. Still a few weeks out. My cam tower isn't pouring yet. A little over a qt between changes. Timing chains from Toyota are outrageously high!

Good luck man! I like you comment "just nuts and bolts" that's how I think of the complex jobs. Take my time, label and bag everything, stop if I question anything and do more research, OEM parts for new, and probably a bunch of luck but it usually only goes back together one way!
