I don't think it'll let you down until you get a slow leak and even then if you've got a compressor like I do, you'll get by.

I'm silly worried about cactus punctures. I want kevlar tires and tire goop.

I think only Goodyear makes tires with Kevlar sidewalls to allow you to drive your pickup on work sites but I could be wrong.

I had mine done at 112k when I bought the truck, and then again after the water pump started leaking at 128k but that’s just how I roll :bananadead:

My 05 DC has 99K miles when I had it done.
I wanted a shop to do it because I wanted the documentation. This was done in 2022. It had the factory belt in there. Mechanic said, "it was time" I live about 75 yards from the epicenter of the Sun. It gets hot AF here.

    Rubber hates heat and Sunlight.
    I over maintenance my rides.
    It's all preventative maintenance.
I abhor breakdowns. Every one of my 6 cars I would jump in and drive to Alaska today.

Lucky me, I have a heated and soon to be AC shop. Makes maintenance fun again.

I know for a fact that preventative maintenance is A LOT cheaper than catastrophic maintenance.

    1) blow out a Maypop tire at 70?
Chances are hello Maaco after that.

snap a timing belt? Hello Auto Trader magazine.

That spare is still good too. Used it in 2017 when I got the truck back.

When I inherited my 01 AC from my grandad. The truck was 20 years old and only had 44k miles on it. I decided to not play russian roullette with that low of a mileage engine and an original belt. I just had the belt done by a former Toyota tech who opened his own shop in March 2023 for peace of mind at 46k. Now I am the one who knows when it was done.

Seems like a lot of former Toyota tech are opening their own shops these days. There's at least two I know of in Houston that did.

I assume that's what Dan's long game plan is too.

This was the result of a leaky water pump for me. Got lucky, it broke on start up, no engine damage. If I was hurtling down the highway, it would have been game over. Put the OEM belt/pump in asap.Timing Belt Shots-2.jpg

Your situation was different than mine. Didn't you say you were adding a lot of coolant? I'm adding maybe 2-3oz once or twice a year. The drop in coolant is barely noticeable.

Started out very slow then escalated quickly. Toyota notes that the coolant is corrosive to the rubber in the timing belt. Just concerned for you. Best of luck!

There are a number of places to loose coolant, other than the water pump, and beyond the standard weep holes Toyota engineered in.

This spot behind the t-stat housing is a big one: https://www.tundras.com/threads/leaking-coolant.54959/

Here's another one, no contact with timing belt:

My belt snapped after owning the truck for a few weeks. My fault for being ignorant and not inspecting it before/after purchase. Engine was fine putting a new one on and I was good to go without issues. Granted it snapped while traveling less than 5mph through a drive through goodwill drop off.

    Edit:
Vehicle was over 286k miles when I bought it. I don't know how many miles the belt had. I can't remember why some reason I was thinking ~90k. However the broken belt was not OEM it was a Gates belt. I used the Aisin kit for the swap.

My 2001 Tundra has 112,000 miles and original timing belt. I plan on replacing it in a few months. It is a farm / work truck now and only drives about 3,000 miles a year. I figure I will also replace the original water pump and radiator.
