Sounds just like mine. Just started this morning. 2014 w/ 287000 km's. I've only had the truck a week. :(

My mechanic suggested I try Lucas oil stabilizer first to see if that helps. If that doesn't help I'll check the timing chain tensioner, then have a look at the valvetrain, exhaust for leaks, and so on.

That sounds like a bad timing chain tensioner.

Yeah, that's the next thing to check. I hope that's what it is.

Wonder if @Ninjaman23 ever found his issue. I read that someone carried on with a bad timing chain tensioner and eventually had the timing chain snap.

Mine's back at it again, only sometimes, just after start up...been 5 months/5K miles since last oil change. I usually change oil twice per year, since I drive right at 10K miles per year. I'm due for oil change within the next month. Use Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5W30. If this could be bad timing chain tensioner, what is involved to diagnose/repair? I have around 11 months left of my extended warranty which covers most everything on truck. I'd hate to let warranty expire and not get repaired, just to have major mechanical failure after warranty expires!

Best of luck, I had to endure timing chain torture in BMW days, these trucks timing chain seems much easier to access.

Have you brought it to Toyota to have them diagnose?

@thered No, I haven't taken to a Toyota Service center yet. I did take to a trusted ASE certified mechanic (friend of mine) who's done previous work on my Toyotas (replaced transmission on wife's 2011 Sequoia). He was able to hear the ticking, but mentioned he didn't know exactly what it was. He said he'd have to tear into the top end to diagnose it. I declined, since he wasn't really sure where to start. My plan is to take it to Toyota eventually, but I was really hoping someone on this forum could give me some insight on diagnosing myself or at least what was involved in diagnosing/replacing the timing chain tensioner, so that IF Toyota verified that as root cause, I'd have some knowledge beforehand. I may post this on "ask the Toyota mechanic" thread.

@16CMTXED I was going to make a video on diagnosing a bad timing chain tensioner if it worked out for me (and if it was my issue). But, weather's warmed up just enough that I'm not getting that sound. It might be a bit before it's cold enough again.

I'm pretty sure this method will work. You get a pretty decent view with the oil filler neck removed. Thanks for this suggestion. Once I'm able to get it to make the noise again, I'll start a new thread on it with a diagnosis video if it turns out to be my issue.

    Ninjaman,
I have a similar issue and they replaced the entire drivers side valves under warranty. (2015 1794 @ 76k)Went away for a bit but returned again last summer now that my warranty is out. It used to only do so when cold out and sitting for 12-24hrs but got more consistent. Try the heavier weight oils of your choice and MAKE SURE the oil level is close to full. Mine is quiet but tends to return now after getting close to 1qt low.
(Factory specs are its ok to burn 1qt every 5k miles per Toyo service manager OK?????.)
Yours does not sound as loud as mine so maybe a tensioner vs valve chatter. Best of luck.
