The safety of Beetles is actually quite impressive. I appraised damage to one that was rear-ended and couldn't believe how well it held up once I saw the car that actually did the rear-ending.

I never thought of that... damn moral upbringing and all that goody-two-shoes shit. Knew a guy who was, at one point, assistant manager for a rental place. The stories he could tell! And they did all repairs in house so 1) they save money on shop labor/parts, and 2) repairs don't show on a carfax report.

    Be careful. That's my advice.

I'll never understand destroying property that doesn't belong to me just for the sake of it.. But this reminds me of a story. I had rented a U Haul pick up. It was brand new model year. An I was excited when they pulled it up. When I got in the interior was totally trashed. Stained everywhere just a mess. I'd feel like such an A-hole if I did that.. I honestly felt bad for the truck. So much so after I used it I took it home and gave it a thorough cleaning inside an out before I returned it.. Trashing a rental to me is like the equivalent of throwing your trash out the window.. I understand if I rented a sports car maybe row through the gears a few times but . It's sad how our adult society conducts themselves.. I'd like to think most people are not that way.. It helps me sleep at night .

Well every time I've had a rental car my friends usually say "jump it!!". I can't say I didn't listen to them..

I've been driving rental car on a weekly basis for over 25 years. 99.99% of the time I drive them like my own. The paperwork with a claim through both companies, mine and the rental agency, is a pain in the ass.
