Hey everyone. We’ve been thinking really hard about leaving California and a really appealing option of relocating to North Carolina have been crossing our minds for weeks now. My wife and I have both been out to RTP several times in 2007 - 2011 but have not been back since. What are your thoughts about Cary or Apex, NC? Looking to purchase a new construction. There are 5 of us and kids are 7, 6 and 2. Thanks in advance for any advice or feedback.

My sis lived in Cary for a while. It was nice. They just recently moved to NW Raleigh. Apparently the school district where they have their kids is part of the reason why? They do go year round, I don't know if thats a district thing or a NC thing.

Good place to raise a family. Your kids are about the same ages as mine. I’m in Holly Springs, right by Cary and Apex. I can try to answer any questions you have.

One comment about new construction, Cary and Apex are running out of land. Most new development is on very small lots. We found we could get more land with new construction in Holly Springs. That’s said, if you’re into biking, running, etc with the family, Cary has a great trail system.

I saw the development out in Holly Springs at Addison Lake and those houses are very nice. Are you familiar with that development? We’re in a master planned community now and was hoping to find something similar as far as nearby pocket parks and variety of developments within the community to ease the kids in. The two older ones have already started to be attached to things so hoping another master planned hood will be a good transition for them. How’s the school district in either area? I think NC in general will be much better than CA. It’s too crowded here and everywhere you turn it’s a concrete jungle.

Thanks for the note about the school. I didn’t think about the year round part.

That development is near a landfill. There’s been a lot of complaints about bad odors from neighborhoods in that area It’s amazing they build luxury homes up to 1M right by a dump.

schools are broken up into county districts so not much difference between Cary apex and HS. In fact my girls’ school is in Apex technically, even though it’s only a mile from the house. Wake county schools is known to be good, but also overcrowded. Lots of people are moving here. We enjoy the year round schools, but have traditional calendar school choices we could use if we want.

Hi. I’m SE of Raleigh now for about 3 years. Have lived in 8 states (including CA) and 3 foreign countries (18 years overseas). My son and his fiance (wife now) moved from Santa Maria, CA to Johnston County (here) about 3 years ago. They are so happy they are out of CA. They even convinced my daughter-in-law’s family to leave CA and move here. They seem happy to have made the move as well. BTW, the locals around here sometimes refer to Cary as the “Containment Area for Relocated Yankees”. Change is often difficult, but it is good you have bisited the area.

Both great places...can’t go wrong with either city. I would also suggest the Clayton area more specifically the Flowers Plantation area.

Hey! I just moved to Apex, NC about 6 months ago. It’s fantastic! 1.5 hrs to the beach and 1.5 hrs to the mountains. Everyone is friendly. Coolest thing is there are beer bars in the grocery stores. Drink a craft beer and go shopping!

Living in Apex for 20 yrs minus a few for international. Feel free to ping for any questions. I think I am the only native NC in my neighborhood. Most of my neighbors are from CA and NY. Apex is expecting to add another 30k over the next decade. It really depends on where you commute and associated schools dictate housing prices.

We moved from Phoenix to Huntersville (near Charlotte) about three years ago. Now that we're used to living in NC I can't imagine going back. Summer is 3 months instead of 6, you get all four seasons, mild winters, and very friendly people.

You will like it in the Triangle area, no matter where you land. However, in Wake County, it’s hard to find a decent sized lot. Most are small. Lots of people moving here. I have visited family in S Raleigh for years and moved here in 2018 to be closer to them. We came from the update of SC, more space and closer to the mountains, but it’s nice to be near family. Like Beerghost said, easy to get either to the beaches or the mountains from Cary, Apex, Clayton, Garner or Raleigh. Three decent sized lakes all within 30-45 minutes in any direction.

Traffic is increasing greatly as the population goes up, my only real complaint. Of course, coming from CA, you may be used to worse traffic than here. Hit any of us up it you have any specific questions. Oh, before I forget, houses are selling in a few days, so whenever you decide to press go, you will need to be ready to grab the one you want immediately.
