Sounds like real world experience talking there. I've never heard before, though, that they have to go with 0W for emissions/CAFE req's, like you're saying. ? Could you elaborate? Explain to me like you'd explain to someone with a username of Uhhh....

I've heard that exhaust leaks sound similar. And after the exhaust manifold heats up (and metal slightly expands and closes the pinhole leak), the sound stops. In my case, that was ruled out, but apparently it does happen.

0w-20 has less resistance on the internal moving parts. Less resistance equals more mpg. Now the owner won’t notice any mpg since it’s probably about .01. But multiple that by the amount of vehicles Toyota sells and the mpg saving is big. More mpg equals less pollution. Lexus already is going to 0w-16.

Frig. Never heard any of that before. So Toyota & other manufacturers say 0W20 b/c of emissions/CAFE. But but real-world, an oil with higher viscosity than 0W20 is better for the engine, quiets it some, and still performs well in extreme low temps. I've always gone with 0W20 because it's what the manual says, but if that's why it says that...
I'm gonna have to do some reading on this.

So I have a 2020 SR5 and I had that annoying diesel knock going since day 1. I complained to the dealer and they told me it's normal along with members here on the forum. So yesterday I had our 15k maint. done and they changed the oil but I noticed they switched it to a 0-20w and wouldn't you know the truck sounds way different. The knock is almost gone and I noticed this dealer uses Pennzoil and my previous would use Mobil 5-30w. Food for thought guys. Just thought I'd share my experience. Our mornings here where I'm at are about 40 degrees or so in case anyone was wondering.

Wait do you mean the 5-30 quieted it down? Doesnt the dealer run 0-20 to begin with ?

No my previous dealer was using 5-30w and this new dealer dropped in 0-20W. My last oil change by the dealer since my free service is over. Going to drop some Amsoil on my next change. Love that stuff ever since I ran it on a diesel I had.

I've had 5 5th gen 4 runners and my current tundra. They all sound like that to some degree or another.

I've used Toyota 0-20 because of the moly content and it seems to mitigate the noise.

I had a 2016 SR5 4runner that was insanely loud at idle in cold weather, hot or cold.

Lol, mine does the same loud ticking/knocking on cold start and I live in NorCal, I have 84k miles on it and I recall it being around for a while, maybe since new? Matter of fact, my mother’s RX350 also does it and it’s a lot worse, legitimate knocking on cold start.

Mine Goes away after couple minutes of idle tho so idk. Engine overall is distinctively loud. All my buddies are telling me to go to thicker oil and say 0/5w-20 is “water”
My father’s 21’ f150 also ticks loud on cold start. Often the ecoboosts have a cam phaser issue when they sit for a while, which in my father’s case, it doesn’t.

Overall I’d assume it takes a bit for oil to get to the top of the engine, in which case a lower viscosity would certainly help. Also hence why alot of people don’t recommend cold idle for too long.

Well fellas I went ahead and did an oil change last Thursday and went with Mobile 1 5w30 and really I’m happy with the outcome. My 15 had 140,xxx miles and the VVT was rather noisy, I’ve even had in to Toyota when it was new because it was so loud but after comparing it to several other Tundras mine was about average. I was shocked how much the difference oil viscosity made a difference. It runs quiter and smother at idle. Heck it just runs better on the HWY. We took it on a 300 mile trip and it just seems to run better in general. Now I wish I’d made the switch sooner.
