Oil?? I do not know what the cold weather oil you should run though? All the new ones run 0/20,, (I think) without going and looking?

I can’t find a solid answer if it’s ok to run 5-30 it seems like a pretty huge debate.

Nothing to debate. To this day the 5.7 in other parts of the world use 5w-30. 0w-20 is being used to satisfy CAFE/EPA standards. I switched. No more noise, except for the idle tick, but no more sounding like a diesel. And I have more oil pressure.

There's a handful of threads about knocking sounds on these engines.

I used to have this exact sound. Knocking coming from driver side only on a cold start - and after it warmed up it went away.

Here's the thread I chimed in on a little while ago (post 46 and the fix in post 49):
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/201...engine-compartment-after-startup.56919/page-2

It was covered under warranty. After Toyota having it for a couple weeks or so, final diagnosis was the valves weren't getting oil like they should to top of engine. They replaced both heads & other stuff leading up to that. It's been fine since they fixed it.

Might sound crazy but my knock sounds separate from the motor. Almost in the trans area. I hear the valves

This is my 4th 5.7, 08-10-14-20. They all had the same tick noise at idle and just a slight rpm raise, it would go away. Now with the 20, since it came from the factory with 0w-20 it had the same tick but also a diesel sound to it. You could really hear it when you went through a drive-thru. I quit going to the dealer for the free oil changes and tire rotations because I was switching over to 5w-30, plus I didn’t care to leave the oil in there for 10k and those idiots would torque the wheels with a impact gun. Anyways as soon as I switched over the diesel sound went away and only had the normal tick, plus higher oil pressure. I don’t want to say for sure but I also think they didn’t change my filter. Waiting to change the oil out again to compare to the last dealer oil change. It just looked too black and weird for a filter that only had around 6k on it. But I will see.

Just because the tick is very common with this engine, doesn't mean it's normal and nothing is wrong. New engines shouldn't tick.

I have had 4 tundra’s , my dad also has one. From what I have gathered it’s the VVT. A lot of vehicles has some sort of ticking noise which is normal. Could be injector tick, cam phasers, valve train, etc. On all my tundras as soon as you give it the slightest amount of gas in park it goes away. Could be because the VVT is now pressuring, I don’t know. I will say that the 0-20 make the engine sound like a diesel leading me to believe that there is less of a cushion of oil with in the parts, if that makes sense. Either way Toyota did switch to 0w-20 in the US for CAFE/EPA standards. Lexus has the UX that uses 0w-16 so we can expect to start seeing that oil soon in all vehicles.

so do your tundras sound like mine on a cold idle? Slightly goes away once at operation temperature but you can still hear it. Also did you ever run 5-30?

I hear ya that it’s common. Mine did the same thing - slightest amount of gas when parked & it went away.
My dealership thought it was enough of a problem to get approval for a $12k warranty repair though. Crazy I know. I don’t know if you saw my post in the other thread (I linked it in this thread) but they replaced quite a bit before finally replacing both heads. No tick at all anymore.

I’m not saying the tick is a huge issue. Frankly, I don’t know. Will it hurt to leave it? By accounts of a lot of the guys here, no, it won’t hurt. But I do still hesitate to say it’s normal, when they went to such great lengths to fix mine, and were able to resolve it. (Who knows - maybe they just wanted to be able to bill Toyota corporate for the big repair. …but the repair was approved.) Their diagnosis (oil wasn’t getting to the top of the lifters) doesn’t sound good. I admittedly know hardly anything about this stuff though - only my one personal experience with it.

Yes. It sounds more like a knock that a tick. When it was new it had a knock and tick. It sounded like no other 5.7 I have had. I switched to 5w-30 and the tick is gone. Still have the knock but less pronounced. I will post a video or 2.

The OP that started that thread definitely had a problem. From what you wrote of what the dealer did, to what they said “the valves weren't getting oil like they should to top of engine” sounds more like oil pressure issue or blockage in the oil passage at the head. I don’t know all the in’s and out’s of the 5.7 but do know about engines. A lifter that is collapsed or that will not fully pressurized will will sound like the video in that other thread. Now what they did to your truck was replace the chain tensioner which if not pressurized will cause slack in the chain and make noise. That has been one of the noise issues with this engine. Also the VVT solenoids not properly working will cause noise. Damn engines now a days are too complicated.

So now you don’t have any sounds at cool start or after it’s warmed up?

"The OP that started that thread definitely had a problem."
You know, it's been ~couple years since mine was fixed... I listened again to OP video in the other thread, and from what I remember, mine did sound much more like that rather than the video in this thread. So...sorry if I caused any concern with what I was saying. Thinking about it more, I remember remote starting my truck, and walking out to it in the parking lot at work, being able to clearly hear that thing rattling from ..I dunno...100 yards away? Far. That thing made a racket.

    They replaced:
    - all lifters and cam gears on driver's side
    - both timing chain tensioners
    - cam shaft pully assembly
    - valve adjusters
    - cylinder head gaskets
    - valve arm sub assembly

It was still making the noise after all that. They then replaced the head on driver's side. The noise then stopped on the driver side, but they then noticed the noise on the passenger side (possibly was always there on passenger side, but not as bad and being drowned out by louder driver side?). They replaced passenger side head and noise completely gone.

Right - I have no noise at all now on cold start, or after it's warmed up. No ticking/knocking noise *as heard in video in the other thread*.

I'm bowing out of this thread after re-watching the video in the other one and realizing what I experienced was far worse than what OP posted in his videos. For my own curiosity, I'm gonna listen to mine at startup tomorrow or Sat to hear if it sounds like the vids in this thread. Cheers, guys. Be blessed.

OP=Original Poster. I was talking about the other thread where the OP had a very loud sounding lifter noise it seemed. From your video, it just sounds like the normal 5.7. It is new so you could bring it up to the dealers attention and have them look at it. Nothing to lose.

got yah! Bringing it in tomorrow morning. My problem is i don’t trust anyone there going to keep it over night and give me a loaner so they can take a listen when it’s cold in the morning. Maybe I’m crazy but I’d rather have it looked at. My dad also has a tundra and it doesn’t make the sound mine does. If they pull some crap and tell me it’s because i have a cat back exhaust Im going to be mad

So I go to the dealer this morning when I made the appointment I said I would like to speak to a mechanic before I check it in. The lady at the counter says yeah that’s not happening as I’m staring at 10 mechanics through glass window. I’m like really before i check it in let me just get someone’s opinion that knows something about these trucks !! So i walked the hell out after driving 45mins. People are so lazy why can’t i ask a tech a question!? Let the thing blow up i want to crash it through the show room floor.

That's your normal 5.7 valve train noise.
Try 5/30 and throw in a can of Ceratec.
It'll go away and the engine will run even nicer.

Someone said maybe a exhaust leak that it’s common ? I got asked if it was a diesel lol my buddy is a mechanic and he said he never heard a tundra sound like that it’s driving me nuts . But these last two days have been warmer in NJ and it hasn’t been as bad soooo idk. Here’s a video of a warmer weather cold start .. don’t worry bout it?
