I wonder if this could be a possible record of some kind? Thinking the truck has paid for itself.

This has to be California. Faded headlights and no rust on the body. That is pretty cool.

No major work has been needed according to him... Just the usual oil changes, he said he uses synthetic and changes the oil every 10000 - 15000 miles. He did have a CV joint go out on him a while back so he had both sides replaced. He actually lives in Truckee, CA and commutes to Reno/Sparks everyday... Truckee gets a TON of snow so that would explain the bad CV joints... The truck looks to be in REALLY good shape and purrs like a kitten when he starts it. @Mike That is a pretty sweet story!! I am pretty sure there is a 2nd gen in Texas with 775000...its at one of their dealerships as a shop truck...I'll try and find it.

Yup, like I said before, take care of your truck and it will give you all the miles you want.

We put 6,000 miles on our truck so far this season and since we don't plan to drive it in winter.....gonna take us a while to get to 1,000,000 miles.

It's all about the highway driving. That's how my Tacoma hit 330,000 miles with the original clutch, tranny, engine, and still drove smooth when I sold it.

I put 10,000 miles on the work truck between April and September this year, 95% of them highway. That's the way you hit that kind of mileage with a pristine, new-looking truck.

If most of my driving was highway miles, I'd take a car.

I briefly tried owning a car and truck. Too expensive. For people who can afford multiple reliable vehicles, that's great.

I can't, with a completely straight face, say I "need" a truck. But my lifestyle definitely qualifies for the type that can really make use of a truck. If I'm only going to have one vehicle (which is all I can have), it's going to be a truck. Funny thing is, while most of my miles are interstate, I also spend far, far more time on dirt roads than the "average" truck owner. In the west, the dichotomy is: incredible access to the backcountry, and both easy and challenging dirt roads. But hundreds and hundreds of interstate miles to get places. Montana is starting to fill in the gaps, like most western states, but the landscape out here is still mostly discreet towns, separated by huge swaths of ranch land and public land. So to go from one town to another (something we do all the time), it's often 100 miles of interstate, each way. When I first moved to a new town a few years back, it wasn't uncommon for me to drive 120 miles, one way, just to grab mail from my PO Box, turn around and drive 120 miles back home. And it wasn't (and still isn't) uncommon to drive dozens of dirt road miles every week.

I want a vehicle that can do both. A truck is a decent compromise.

As a homeowner with a large yard, trees and upkeep, a pickup comes in handy. I like 'sitting up' in a truck vs sitting position of a car. I prefer the ride quality of my Tundra compared to most cars, including my wife's Lexus RX350.

Keeping my Tundra hasn't been about money. I could have replaced it at any time over the years. Fact is, I like it. So far it hasn't given me a compelling reason to purchase anything different. The new Tundras are bigger than I want and unfortunately earned a poor reputation for reliability. The Tacoma, while it looks near as big as the Gen1 Tundra, the cab is noticeably smaller. So... I'll continue to drive my Tundra until something better (for me) comes along... if ever.

I was thinking just last night "if we had to seriously downsize, I'd sell the others and keep the Tundra."

    ***
I think I'd like to visit this "west" you are talking about. Perhaps get a recreational vehicle. Marry a large American woman, raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me. (Anyone catch the movie reference?)

Seriously though, I would like to drive across the American west. I love driving, looking out the window, and I much prefer small towns to big cities.

I grew up in NY. I still have a lot of nostalgia for the east coast, and it'll always have a pull on me. But...I moved west for college and haven't been able to tear myself away since (30 years ago now). The way my equations for what I want out of life calculate, the west still comes out ahead.

But we live in a time of hyper-accelerated change, and I can't predict where I'll be 5 years from now.

Our household has 2 full time drivers and one in training. I have 3 vehicles and the other driver has one. I bought the tundra to be a daily driver and as a pickup. My 4Runner and hot rod are historic vehicles and only the runner gets taken to work. The real issue on the horizon is whether I’ll have to downsize my fleet to make room for the upcoming drivers to be. How many is too many, when you’ll never have enough?(rhetorical?)

Ideally.....(no man can know what is his "ideal" as only God knows what is best for each of us) but ideally I'd like something like 30 licensed, insured, and in use vehicles PLUS garage space for all.

The garage space is usually the hardest part, followed by keeping them all running. The collecting is the easiest part, my 5 non running motorcycles can attest to that.

    OMGosh that!

All kinds of cars piled up in yards around here.....collecting those was easy....garage space and keeping them running...not so much.

So I need enough money for the cars, garage space, maintenance, licensing, insuring, and since I can't drive that many cars very easily, I'd have to hire drivers to do it for me. (All super-hot women by the way......OK I see a divorce coming.)

Look at Jay Leno, warehouse full of cars he's collected, and at least one or two full time mechanics keeping them running.

Just the Tundra, usually hooked up to either of the two trailers. I hope to make enough space in the coming weeks to get her into the mower garage for winter. I don't plan to drive her in the snow for fear of that frame rusting.

Here she is in summer though:
