If your Tundra is going to be more of an adventure vehicle where you frequently go off pavement for hunting, fishing, camping, trail riding, etc, I would say stick with the 2nd gen platform. It's a proven platform with superior ground clearance, visibility, interior space, and suspension articulation. Also, if you want one last new-ish truck to be the last truck you ever buy, it's capable of lasting that long.

If your Tundra is going to stick to pavement to do some light duty towing, or if you place a higher value on ride comfort or screen size and tech, go with the 3rd gen. It rides smoother on pavement and has a higher tow rating. I also think you should get the extended warranty.

That's not to say that you can't use one for the other's strengths. I know plenty of people who happily tow with their 2nd gens. Plenty of people build their 3rd gens for off-roading, too.

Why you quoting me? Quote the OP he's the one asking peoples opinions.

I’ll stay in the past, it’s better anyways.
See your 2012 was a real half ton, as your 22 IDENTIFY as a half ton ;)

Thats a big No. If you do it right they're still reliable. Even if I keep my truck to 500k miles thats still DAMN good! There are guys in the supercbarger thread that are pushing close to 300k.

This is a fair assessment. Although, I will say that the 3rd gen is plenty capable off-road; it just feels more fragile than the 2nd gen. I would also stick with the 2nd gen if you’re traveling long distances often. Definitely negotiate an extended warranty to be included in the price if you purchase a 3rd gen.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
    Keep your 2021.

A few days ago I had the opportunity to test drive a 2023 Sequoia Platinum, my first seat time on the new platforms. I won’t comment on the Tundra from the front seats back, but aside from that should be very similar driving experience.

The new iForceMax and the 10 speed are impressive. The new infotainment screen and operating system are nice.

Outward visibility is sub par. Seats were OK but not any better than my ancient Gen 2.

Ride quality of the Sequoia wasn’t appropriate for its mission but would be OK for a truck. Not exceptional but better than an old Gen 2 Tundra on poor pavement.

Pricing on both is outrageous. Neither can actually tow full rated weight unless you plan to travel driver only because the payloads are too low.

The overall driving experience was a let down to be honest, as long as we waited for an update Toyota could have and should have done better.

Wait for the rumored 2026 model year refresh.

I quoted you because you posted " Why would you downgrade to a little V6 that needs help to move the a half ton truck.". Leading the OP on that the motors a dog when you don't even own one , but have made a life time career of slamming it on the GEN 3 forum. Don't like being quoted, go back to the 2nd Gen forum and hang out with the 18 people still left on it. And my 2022 does everything the 2012 does.....just better

Yeah you gotta build it more, though. Ground clearance and articulation are not as good in the 3rd gen. And the approach angle suffers from the massive cooling systems up front.

You guys ever wonder if someone starts these threads just to sit back and watch the show . I have both 2nd, and 3rd Gen. I enjoy the 3rd much more than the 2nd, but don't have any complaints about thd 2nd either. Now hold my beer while I epoxy a trim piece peeling off my 3rd.

Well, you guys didn’t scare me away from a Tundra. Bought a used 2023 SR5 TRD today. 4,100 miles on it. You did cost me $1800! I’ve never bought an extended warranty before, but this time I did. Goes to 100,000 miles, or 7 years. Over the years we’ve bought (4)Landcruisers, (2) 4Runners, a Tacoma, an FJ Cruiser, and a 2012 Tundra. Usually buy with a lot of miles then sell at 250,000. Never have needed any major repairs. Never needed an extended warranty. Hopefully I’ll never need to use the warranty on this one.

So far you have been comparing mortgages to truck payments and it is true. Trucks are as much or more than a house payment if you bought pre covid. I have a feeling it might come back around some day but will take time. Too many crypto billionaires and stock market manipulators have caused a chaotic inflated market. Too much money chasing too few of goods has kept inflation going crazy. It isn't the interest or the house payments hurting but rather the taxes and insurance escrow adjustments happening due to inflation. Lucky for my mortgage company allows me to recast my 3 percent fixed loan every so often to lower the payment when the escrow amounts get too high.

It you all timed the market correctly then you could have gotten a deal when you sold your old truck. I unloaded a pristine 18 Raptor with 52k miles for $54k and the highest offer I got on trade in was $45k. Someone always wanting to make money off someone else which is what capitalism is all about. You can be a hero or a zero in this market, you just have to strike when the timing is right.

Now the interesting part will be to see if the Tundra holds its value like the previous generation and Toyota's in general. I mean you put 200k miles on a 10 year old truck and can sell it for $30k then that is a win in my book.

    @vtl good burn as usual.

But the reality is that over 99% of Gen3 owners will not have engine issues. Like those who used horse drawn carriages back in the day, there will come a time when you too will have to come to the future of trucks that have more micro chips than ever before. Its scary, I know, but we'll be here to hold your hand when the time comes

Eventually, yes, Tundras will be as good as any other good civilian turbo vehicle. I.e. for about 200k give no problems. I've had more turbos than N/A, still keep one for fun.

Don't need others hands, too, unless they carry a six pack for me ;)

This thread is funny. There's been one like it on Tacomaworld going on for a few years between the 2nd gen guys and the 3rd gen guys. Now it's between the 2nd/3rd gen guys and the 4th gen guys. Very entertaining!

I love it! I was very happy with my 2017 Taco thought about upgrading maybe in a year or 2. I got a Ltd Hybrid TRD Pro 4x4 with a bunch of stoopid options for 61k bfr tax/licence....while waiting for an oil change on a 23 Corolla hybrid we had. As I was waiting on the paperwork someone took delivery of the 24 Taco for 55k (SR5 trim 4x2!!!) WTFO! umm yeah - it's cray cray out there. I figured that the Econ 101 oversupply of large trucks and the slight depression of pricing well below their overinflated MSRP won't last long. But this truck drives like a freaking cadillac. Hopefully it holds up, if not i got the 10/100 platinum warranty backing me up. As a side note, we have been Toyota people since my Dad got pissed at GM in 1972. I am shocked at the 13k lawsuit guy having to do that, but someone in corporate in San Antonio is probably trying to make a name for his-self - it's probably that pederast Hanrahan....I don't know....:anonymous:

PS - Carvana gave me 32k for a Taco I paid 37k for in 2017. Crazy.

My 2022 was in the shop for five weeks with a blown engine, got it back last week. It has had I believe 4 seat panels replaced along with the recalls.

My engine went at 45,000 miles. I will believe that the engine issues are fixed when the newer vehicles hit 100,000 or so miles.

I have owned 1st year production Toyota products in the past with no issues--this generation is a step down.

I mean the 2022 is rated to tow 11,000 pounds versus the 2017 is rated versus a 2017 is rated for 10,500. I get the ratings depend on a lot, like weight of the driver. But These trucks have to pass alot of tests to get that rating. So if a 2022 Identifies as a half ton, then so would your precious 2017.

Had a 2012 that I bought new. Loved it, never any issues, but I wanted some of the new tech and such. Bought a barely used 2023, and love it. I did get an extended warranty because all the electronics and tech scare me.

It’s early, but so far no regrets.
