Thanks fo the heads up on the reversies.
I'm still looking for those bulbs. The shell on my truck has drapes, so I'm left with looking through the side mirrors and back up cam while backing up.
That extra light at night would be cool.

 

Did the 9012 fog light mod. Fogs are way better then the standard 9006 they replaced. More closely matches my headlight color now.

Also have added LED cargo light bulbs, huge improvement. Also an LED main cabin light, much better. As well as LED back up bulbs. Did not go with the osrams as they were hard to find, more expensive and I have auxiliary LED lights mounted in rear bumper so I'm good as is.

One thing to note, I shouldn't have changed bulbs outside when it's 15 deg out. One of the tail light housing clips busted... Der.

Next up new LED parking lights.

 

I just ordered LED back up bulbs too cause I couldn't find the osrams either. I hope they don't jack up my electrical system (can't imagine they will) . . . I'm old with shitty eye-sight . . . hoping they help at night.

 

Just installed mine yesterday. They were just a cheap Amazon LED 921 set. They worked when I tested them yesterday in daylight. No electrical issues. Forgot to pay attention this morning but it was fresh snow so pretty bright and not a good test.

 

Mine broke when it was 70... Epoxy and filler seems to have done the trick.

Yeah I'll get it fixed up this spring. I knew as I was pulling on it to get the clips to pop out I was running increased risk of it breaking due to the cold. But at the age of the trucks they could break anytime I guess.

 

I put a little Silicone Lube on those clips last time in there as the Mojo seemed like it needed it. Glad I did based on these potentially becoming a problem.

Just a heads up to everyone the Sylvania Long Life Incandescents Parking/Brake/Signal Bulbs are cheap and pretty bright compared to some of the LED. The LL Bulbs don’t mess with the System Dynamics, either.

 

My 921 LED bulbs are definitely an improvement over the standard bulbs they replaced. Probably not as good as the osrams, but with my in bumper back up lights I don't need any better. Worthwhile upgrade for $20. We'll see if they last as long as they say...

 

I wish I found this thread before I dropped $35 on some reverse lights but I can tell you these LEDs are BRIGHT!

 

Another update on this mod:

I continue to be pleased with the light output from the headlights, fog lights and reverse lights. Had some battery drain issues that coincided closely with this upgrade. Upon further inspection and measuring of battery drain with the vehicle off it appears my brake controller is the only significant drain at 0.1 amps. I am not currently towing anything that requires the 7 pin harness so I unhooked the power to the controller and harness. Doing so also killed my backup camera it seems, so I'll have to investigate further. Perhaps an always on camera could be the issue and not the always on brake controller. Regardless, the drain does not appear related to the headlight mod.

 

I ended up ordering these back-up bulbs as sort of an impulse-buy from that online-giant that begins with an 'A'.
I installed them on my 06 DC w/o issues.
They are 'heavier' than the stock bulbs, so I bent the receptacle tabs inward a little to give a little better grip.
I also put a swipe of dielectric on the ends for the 'dork factor'. They are definitely brighter than stock, & it's much easier to see things on screen now while in reverse with the back-up camera in the dark. They are not as bright as @two2cal lights seen above, but I'm satisfied so far. We'll see how they hold up. They were $12.99 for the pair.

 

‘The A’ has those Osrams back in stock that you couldn’t find last month. They are cheap again at $8 a bulb. Saw this yesterday.

These were a fantastic upgrade over the factory bulbs, lots of light and no issues. A little tab bending to tighten up the contacts and they pop right in. Worth it.

 

These are doing nicely. Brighter than both stock or the LED Replacements that I had prior. Overall very good light and just enough to be happy without the extra work/cost of adding additional Aux Lights. Thanks for the recco.

9 months later this mod is working well for me. No burn outs, no battery issues. Good light output.

 

Putting on short list for fog light update or at least clean up my orig faded globes !

 

Keep us posted. That was my main front facing light source until I got my harness built.

8 months later, still going strong. Don't drive a lot, maybe 5-6k miles per year, but haven't had any burnouts yet. Or more importantly burn downs. Mod seems solid, keeps the factory look.

 

Thinking through the resistor aspect here. Haven’t done my lighting work yet but it’ll be a harness and I’ve so far decided OEM housings for now. I intend to move DRL to the side / signal light via switchback somehow (not sure yet how). And long term I’m hoping for some adapter to get a regular pod in the fog location. Short term I might do a bulb mod or just leave them off. The easiest route there may be a completely independent harness directly off the switch, though I guess that means no indicator light in the dash. I could probably live with that. Also a little tempting to play around with trying to shove a more modern stalk into place with a conversion harness to feed the OEM side.

Anyway, here is where I wasn’t anticipating trouble. If using a harness, it seems some (all?) trucks won’t turn on the lights at all since the coil draw is so small? In which case the suggestion is to add load resistors of ~50w?

So, say you use 100w bulbs and the harness, and you “need” resistors, total change from factory spec is around +200w total? Which is ~14 amps, maybe round up to 15? And half of that is going to lighting, the other half wasted to resistors?

Or do the 50w resistors not actually burn 50w but are rated to 50w?

Since the headlights do not need to be on for the ECU to be happy, I’m almost wondering if a completely independent system would be best. Maybe a timer to turn off the relay coil after 10 minutes without ignition to add some protection?

I’m mostly thinking maybe the best plan is to just hijack the negative trigger for high and low beams at the stalk and go from there.

 

The issue is with the way fog lights work on these trucks. You need to mess with the fig switch and all the weirdness goes away.

fog light switch gers it’s voltage from the high beam side when lows are on. When you turn the highs on, you fog switch is now ground and ground. I removed the factory pin and ran my on 12v ignition wire to the switch. No more issues


And I can turn fogs on whenever

 

I may have missed this earlier in the thread, but is there an issue running H4 bulbs 100/55W with the stock wiring? I'm assuming that until I upgrade the headlight wiring harness it can't deliver the necessary power to the bulbs and I'm just not getting full use. I'm not experienced with electrical work so pardon my ignorance @empty_lord

 

The stock wiring can get too hot and pop the fuse or worse catch fire. Rare but can happen. But it will be like less than half the expected output. Not worth it without a harness
