No real time restraints, just planning on traveling around. Would rather not stay in campgrounds. Would like to hit some trails see some sights. I am a rock hound so I like to dig in the dirt too. Have any favorite places? Trails? Dirt? Lol

Colorado State Parks are wonderful but, over the past 5 years, it seems a LOT of folks now are into camping so you have to get reservations months out....or you need to go camping Tuesday-Thursday to find anything open....which is a pain.

    Happy Trails!

Do what I did. Buy your own campground off the grid. Problem solved...

Well that's out ! Lol. I wouldn't be able to pinpoint any specific days anyhow. This will be my first time traveling around with a camper, usually just the truck cap,or tent. Never really know how long I will be gone or where exactly I am going but with the camper that may change things. Will have a generator, and used to "roughing it" so this will be a whole new ballgame ! Thanks for the info !

How big is the camper and how far west?
Most western states have enough public land to allow for “throw down” camping, no fee, no permit, 14 day limit (unless you get on the BLM lands controlled by the Cliven Bundy cult).
I’m also pretty sure you can get a “rock hound” paperback book for a lot of western states. AZ for certain.

Colorado has a 14 day limit in a lot of counties on public land. The state parks here during the off season that remain open aren't too crowded at all. After Labor Day it's gets a lot better.

17' I have a few books and websites for reference. Was thinking of the public land option mainly. All options are open for how far west I go. Just out for adventure !

Colorado has several State Wildlife Areas that usually have year round primitive camping and no fee....

    Edit.....and usually toilet facilities.

Reason I asked is because the size limits the roads and trails that you can navigate. You should be able to get a 17’ trailer into some decently remote areas without much trouble. Do it. Bring a gun.
A rudimentary plan and route would help you collect pertinent maps and area information. You don’t have to limit your spontaneity just because you get information! lol

I do like the primitive camping areas. I was in Colorado in October and loved it so plans are to hang out there for a good bit. Was also amazed at the amount of Tundras there !!!

I'm with you on this. I really do not like staying in campgrounds either.

My wife is a rock hound as well, which kind of makes me one. I like crawling Jeeps on rocks, she like loading them up in the bed of my truck.

There are tons of dispersed camping in CO, if you want to look into that. I have never had an issue with getting in someplace.

If you want, you can pull into my mountain property and get lost for a while.

Oh yes, this trip will require more planning ! I have hopes to park the camper and wheel around. I will be doing a good bit of reading about traveling with a gun. Have them, just don't usually travel with them !

Oh Lord, tell me about it. I hauled 4k lbs of rocks from ID in 06'. Last year around 500 lbs from ID. We could build a house with all these rocks over the years.

What a view, damn that's nice. I would say probably a bit out of my price range, unfortunately.
My brother and his wife can load up my truck pretty fast. I can't believe the distances they have carried rocks

Power and phone in the road, already permitted for a well, which is not as easy or cheap in CO anymore.
