Older thread, but Stumbled onto it. Your truck came a long ways from the earlier days when on the other site. Solid build!

Thanks man! LOL I'm still around, still wheeling The Truck. In fact, I spent all day cleaning up some electrical gremlins

What up! Someone messaged me here and it made me think about my build thread. I figured I would post a little update. The Truck is still doing work! We use it all the time. Last month I rebuilt the shocks and swapped fluids. Its gone through some changes. We got a dog (standard poodle) so we had to ditch the RTT and change the rack set up a little. I've done various minor upgrades to improve reliability to the front core section. It kept falling apart on me haha but I think it good now.

Anyways, just wanted to check in and let you guys know that we still use The Truck! It runs great! Its still our main adventure tool. See ya on the trails!

Hey @osidepunker, great build! I have a question for you. I've just upgraded my suspension, and I'm looking to get bigger tires. I've read a lot of different opinions on regearing though. What are your thoughts on 4.88 vs 5.29 with 37" tires? Thanks for your input!

Ive been running 4.88's and 37's for years. It works. 4.88's are technically stronger than 5.29's due to the pinion size and engagement. But I will be switching to 5.29's in the very near future. I have intentions of going to 39/40" tires in the future. Plus id like a little more response at lower rpm/Hp range.

Thanks for the reply! Are 5.29s better for towing?

    as an example
    Stock
    4.30's on 32 @ 55 MPH = 2483RPM
    4.30's on 32 @ 70 MPH = 3160 RPM
    4.88's on 37's @55 mph = 2437 RPM
    4.88's on 37's @70 mph = 3102 RPM
    5.29's on 37's @55 mph = 2642 RPM
    5.29's on 37's @70 mph = 3362 RPM

so the question is does the trans hunt for gears at your towing speed? if so some find 5.29's better
are you concerned with large hills and/or MPG 5.29's might be better

additionally, are you running a tune? If so, the trans map can be adjusted in a variety of ways to compensate for some of the above.

Added stock numbers 4.88's will put you closest to stock with larger tires.

Checking in! Still using The Truck! No changes lately, just been using it and fixing it LOL I have been concentrating on keeping it running.

We are starting a new chapter though:

    20250808_103349.jpg 20250808_103455.jpg

We are keeping The Truck. Say hello to The Diesel! The plan is to put The Camper on it haha Picking up a Lance 1172 soon. First project will be batteries and solar for full off grid camping. Then Carli Dominator kit and 37s. I'll add some lights and a radio but that's probably all I am going to do to The Diesel. We have The Truck for when we want to get extreme.

SGU Death Valley Turkey Run in Nov! Let me know if you want to tag along!

    See ya on the trail!

Its a Platinum with the high output power stroke! Such a beautiful monster LOL Gonna put the Dominator kit on with the King 3.0s. I am not overthinking this one too much. Its gonna have a 5000 lbs camper on it so I wont be doing anything crazy. I just need to lift it and put some soft shocks on that will actually control 14k combined weight.

If I drop the camper I could potentially run The Diesel hard, but the leafs will be the limiting factor. Have to run the stock leafs because there arent any better options out there unless I want The Camper to be mounted full-time

I almost thought you got the F-450 with that wheel/tire package. When you mentioned the HO motor I realized it was a 350.

Do some research on a CP4 bypass system....400.00 can save 14000.00.

Full LT, full armor, fully self contained Speed Glamper
I dont have a flatbed yet, but thats the reason I went with the F450. Bumper tow for my configuration is 30k lbs. F350 has taller gears but is close with 28k. F350 actually beats the 450 on payload, 5850 vs 5303 for mine. But that is because the F450 weighs more. GVWR is the same for both trucks at 14k lbs.

The REAL story is that the F450 is derated to avoid commercial stickers in some states. There is a reason it weighs more than the 350. It has bigger axles, shorter gears, HUGE brakes, and commercial wheels / tires. The turning radius is wild, way tighter than the other super duties.

but yeah, I am going to live in the camper part time during the week while I work since I dont want to buy a home in SD haha
