I’ve never seen a game be temporary suspended, nor this type of medical emergency

Pretty crazy. Hit didn't look that hard, look like he took a shoulder to the sternum.

Latest is he has a pulse but can't breath on his own

Yes. I’ve seen much more violent hits. His head took a jolt. It’s a brutal game. I hope he pulls through.

Super Bowl a dozen or so years ago. Heard the crack of the helmets over the tv. It was a good hour or more before the game started again. It was bad.

Yeah it looked like a medical issue as opposed to the play. Either way it sucks. Hope he's OK.

They utilized an AED so his heart stopped beating. Perhaps he did have an underlying heart condition.

Before we get into Q-T intervals and the heart rates of top tier athletes like this, I will say I am a little disappointed he didn't even make it 20 seconds before dismissing the v-word as a potential differential diagnosis. It's fishy, and shitty diagnostics due to the recent uptick in cardiac events following you know, the thing.

Now, NFL football players will likely have a HR of 80-100 bpm (particularly skilled position players) during this activity. Commotio Cordis as a Dx is certainly feasible and likely, but disruptions to ventricular function result in immediate sequelae. Hamlin got up, took a couple of steps, and then began his cardiac episode. in this period of time, he's had at least 12 Q-T intervals based on his HR & situation. CC is typically instant, and the affected don't go to their feet first. I wouldn't immediately dismiss a dislodged clot (like YouTube MD here did) resulting in vascular damage, as Hamlin's response is more in line with that type of trauma/injury.

Regardless I pray for his recovery and his family & friends at this time.

This 100%. If we're going to do science...I mean, let's actually DO it - constantly question, using facts as untainted by bias as possible, etc. Wife used to be a cardiac nurse and she said much the same thing you did.

Disclaimer - This is NOT directed at anyone on this forum…..

So much misinformation, armchair qb’ing and pundits trying to make a name for themselves being the first to make a diagnostic evaluation. It’s maddening actually. And disgusting. I have been in the sports medicine field for close to 30 years and seen a lot of shit…..A LOT of shit. In fact, i am regularly asked to participate in media spots (tv / radio) following these types of events due to my experience. I always decline because I never want to be the guy who speculates on what ifs and innuendo without all of the facts.

here are a few of the inarguable facts in this case:
    1. Highly trained and skilled medical personnel were on site and reacted in literal moments to enact their emergency action plan
    2. They performed their professional duties and obligations as they’re trained and saved this young man’s life. Literally anywhere else he likely would not have made it but for the expertise and medical technology available to him. Trust me when I tell you from experience - they will never be the same. It takes a heavy toll.
    3. This will trigger a ton of policy and procedure dissection from the nfl all the way down to college and high school football. Maybe rightfully so.

one thing I will say - it’s AMAZING that this kind of thing doesn’t happen more often. If you think about the amount of exposures that occur on a daily basis during high school, college and nfl football every day (every tackle in every drill during every rep)……it’s millions and millions of exposures over the course of a week I bet. I am always stunned that there are not more catastrophic incidences……speaks to the levels of coaching, the honing of the athletes skills, the work ethic involved by the individuals to keep themselves in shape, attention to detail, training of medical personnel, etc to ensure that it DOES NOT happen more often.

There will be speculation about the reason why it happened, the diagnosis, if there were underlying conditions, etc…….all that will play out in due time. These people who say “it was definitely Commotio cordis” are guessing at best. If anything this would be a highly unusual presentation of Commotio cordis. I remember vividly the Hank Gathers incident and it was eerily reminiscent of that. There are a lot of factors that don’t add up to it solely being Commotio cordis, if at all. Could have been a multitude of things that contributed to a perfect storm - BUT again thank the lord for the fast action of the people charged with caring for these individuals.

That’s all I will say on the matter except for I am glad the nfl got it right eventually and called the game. This young man and his health was the ONLY thing that mattered last night and moving forward. Football is entertainment…..sometimes we forget how much these young men and women sacrifice to have a fat piece of shit like me sit down and have a few beers while I yell at the tv

Last night made me glad that JJ Watt is getting out. I always thought he should have retired a few years ago. He had an episode with his heart and now he has a new baby and wife so I was glad he is getting out while he can still get around! He has one more game and I sure hope nothing happens this last game!! If I was him I’d pull up lame! There are no guarantees but this football stuff is brutal!!! Some of the hits these guys inflict and take are amazingly rough!!

As much as the nfl says it wants to do right by the teams and the young man who was injured, their decisions will solely be based on how the lack of a game result effects playoff scenarios and seeding. They’ll wait to see how week 17 games play out and what impact the lack of a result will have on home field, seeding, etc. My bet is that they will eventually call it a tie.
