so it looks like the area that normally has the tow hooks is not there any more and there's a Sway bar bracket.

Wait, so if I go outside and stick a big piece of plastic under my bumper and remove my tow hooks then I’ll get better gas mileage? I’d also have more payload too?

At least 5% improvement. You need to remove it if towing or your mileage will not be as good as without it.

They will have a fairly stout anchor point somewhere. They have to be able to anchor the ugly pos somehow for transport to dealers. The previous anchor points were not intendended to be used for recovery.

I forgot what video, but they purposely made it cheap to replace. That’s not as good as never having to replace it, but it is what it is.

btw, where in South Florida are you, and have you gotten anywhere with a dealer?

There will be a race to get the least intrusive aftermarket tow hook solution once the truck's on the market. Too bad there doesn't appear to be any way to access a sufficiently strong anchor point without a full bumper swap or at a minimum some serious cutting.

Before you enter the mud you strap traction blocks to the tires transforming the truck into a half track, then proceed very slowly and reverse if the mud exceeds 5" in depth.

I feel like there has to be a solution we're not seeing yet. If this were purely about aerodynamics, they could have done VW style tow hooks behind a door.

It has electric flip up tow hook windows and electric telescoping towhooks that are hard to see. They auto deploy when the stuck sensors are triggered. This gives you .000006 mpg gain at 65kph. There is a override switch on the dash. Normally you would just laugh but with the turbo tundra you prolly really questioning it

I'd be willing to bet you they're optional, and that's where they're going.

Edit: I spent a solid two minutes looking at the hi res photos of the pro. There literally isn't another location, and I really doubt Toyota just forgot.

Mike Sweers mentioned in one of the videos. It will be available as an option, so they did not forget about it; just don't install it as standard. For the majority of Tundra owners who never really go off road those hooks are not really needed. I use my truck off road every day and have been stuck several times, but I have never used the tow-hooks either; I always get pulled out backwards from the tow-bar. I know conditions are different and there will be a time when I will use it, but I would say in the life of the average truck most never get used or only a few times at most.

The current (2.5 gen) don't come standard with tow hooks on the 2WD models either. On SR it does not even seem to be an option.

This just assumes you still have power. Just from a practical standpoint, there has to be a solution.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's "optional", but it comes on every truck anyway. I would think most dealers would go ahead and order the truck with the tow hooks at least if there is a truck guy that does the ordering. Then it'll just be a $150 upcharge for the optional tow hooks.

There are lots of trucks without tow hooks, including current & previous gen Tundras. Just because a few of us use them, there are many truck owners who will never use them, and will not even know that they do or don't have them.

I don't have any immediate need for them. No plans to go off road yet. I would rather have them on my truck for the same reason I'll carry jumper cables and a toolbox. You never know when they're going to come in handy.

Tow hooks are most appropriate for recovery of the truck, however some people use them to recover or tug on other vehicles or things. With half ton trucks it's not a good idea to put it in 4x4 and tug hard in reverse, most half ton front transfer cases are not designed for that kind of stress. Especially if you're using 4LO in reverse. The rear end handles those stresses better and if possible, you should recover other vehicles from the rear of your truck.

Best to actually only use the truck as an anchor and winch or come a long the stuck vehicle.
