She's been in the family since she was adopted in 2003! Dad bought it new to help us move from NY to NC (I was in gradeschool). My immediate family all lives in the same town here, and the Tundra stays under cover at my house - living an easy life really. I drive it usually once a week just to keep things fresh and the family comes and gets it at will whenever anybody has a project. Its still in his name, but I've pretty much taken over all the costs and caring for it.

That is a neat website though... my 4runner is second hand - I will have to see what sort of a background I can pull on it.

The 4runner is in tough shape at the moment. I swapped my GF vehicles for the day so I could take hers to get a cruise control put in it and she found a deer... I'm glad she hit it with the 4runner rather than it very likely going through the windshield of her car - but yikes it was a ton of damage.

Mostly the same story with my truck. Pops bought it used. Did routine stuff. Water pump, oil changes, etc. I learned to drive into it, had a lot of my "firsts" (;)) in this truck, and then I took over the maintenance.

Bummer on the 4runner. That deer shit all over that rig when she hit it. The bumper, the windshield, the window, the walls, till the sweat drop... oh, my bad. Looks totally repairable to me. She okay? I bet she was shook up. Her first road kill? I was tore the hell up when I hit my first deer in a Malibu of all vehicles. Tundra took the others. :D.

Yup! My tundra has become part of the family for exactly those reasons! Too and from college, several girlfriends, 2 much missed dogs, thousands of lbs of projects hauled around in the bed... it even saved my jacked up and decked out Jeep Wrangler one time when I got in a mudhole that was just too much!!! The exploits of that rig have earned it my personal gratitude and debt.

She was very badly shaken up. I had to ask her about 30 times where she was before she calmed down enough to tell me. It shut off when she made impact, but obviously she was able to keep control and guide it to a stop. I took her straight home and put her on the couch with a bottle of wine (basic white girl stuff) for recovery and went back to see it. Dad and I got it running again on the side of the road, but with no coolant in it we were afraid to drive it anywhere. Flat bedded it to a bodyshop and she's been there for the past few weeks. 7,000$ in damage and a salvage title, but I will have her back home soon - sporting a 3/8ths inch thick steel deer killer on the front!!! lol

I will probably be posting a new thread again when that time comes, looking for a good leveling kit.

How did a Malibu fare with the deer? That seems like kind of a low car for an animal with such spindel-y legs....

Just when I think ya'll guys cant get any better....

    thank you much!

I just ordered them. I've got 3 packages coming from 3 different orders... surely something will fit! If I wind up with doubles of things, I'll keep them with the truck - cheap insurance to make sure I don't deal with this again in the next 200k miles!

This is where the robot starts yelling "Danger Will Robinson!" A lot of old school mechanics tightened belts until you could make them twang like a guitar string, then made bank replacing water pumps and alternators. I'd check the tension on the belts and make sure they aren't too tight. I'd also ream the mechanic for throwing away the part, make him dig for it, and then I'd hit a couple of parts houses to see if the bolt is available. That's a fairly common design and either an exact part, or a "purt near" part should be available. Lastly, I'd start looking for a new mechanic.

You're probably right on all of that, but I live in a VERY small town, (<3000 people) there aren't but 2 real mechanics here, and this guy really has been good to me since I brought him my beat up Jeep when I turned 16. Honestly this is the first thing he's botched in my experience with him. I best not be burning bridges that easy!

If this is the first real problem you've had with him over the years, he might have just been having a bad day. In that case, make him feel guilty and tell him he owes you a beer for your trouble. Then, buy him a can of Kroil and tell him to keep it on hand for the next time.

@Yank12, by no means am I trying to offend, but think about this.

You said that you aren't a car guy on your other thread. Just because your jeep, and truck run doesn't mean they were repaired correctly. Would you be able to know?

Your shade tree mechanic left you holding the bag on his/her fuck up. Personally, that'd put a right sour taste in my mouth.

Obviously, he or she used zero penetrant like Kroll, wd-40, etc. On rusty bolts, even a slight amount of rust l, it's always better to use penetrant to help loosen them, and prevent snapping of important things. Like a tensioner bolt assembly...

I was being nice earlier because we were trying to get you taken care of, and I understand you're from a small-town. My hometown is twice the size of yours, and I thought it was small! I'd be looking at other shops. Even if you have to drive some distance. Peace of mind, and trust.

Just my two cents, and thoughts. No offense meant.

    None taken!

You're right. I dont, and wouldn't have a clue. And you make a good point, but its a double edged sword...

On one hand, yea, im getting screwed here - no doubts about that. But still, this is the first issue Ive ever had with this fella after years, and at the end of the day, he fessed up, because with the truck running anyway, like you said, I wouldn't know there was an issue.

He could've kept his mouth shut, cashed my check, saved face, and I'd of been in a worse spot...

If I go out and find a new mechanic, then I'm totally in the woods. He could be a lot better - but it could be a lot worse too....

I figure at least I have a good history with this guy - he had an off day, and we'll make it right (with help from all my new friends here! :) )

Now if i get burned on hundreds of dollars or something.... thats another story. Lol

I AM take Randy's advice and squeeze him for a beer though!

Did the mechanic have the tensioner in the can or is it lost forever?

    Hey guys!

I got everything squared away. He fixed it for free - thank you all so much for your help, its appreciated!

I dont have much skill / experience / knowledge of vehicles, so you probably wont see me posting much unless I get stuck again, but I promise to lurk!

    Thanks for your kindness gentlemen.

    Hey Everyone!

I thought about yall the other day while I was putting in some new headlights and wanted to say thank you again. I've got a new anti-deer bumper on the front of my 4runner (lol) that my brother and I put together ourselves from a kit. I'm really happy with it, and 3/16ths steel seems like it will be up to the task of keeping her out of the bodyshop! The Tundra is also doing great, that little bolt that everyone helped me find was perfect, and I found a new mechanic who seems to take a lot better care of my rigs - even letting me get involved some so I understand what he is doing! True to my lesson being learned about deer and vehicles, my Tundra is also in the process of getting a steel bumper put on it so hopefully its a long time before I have to come back here looking for parts!

On a side note, I have extra 2006 4runner parts, the OEM steel support from the original bumper, the front cowlings, supporting foam, and OEM grill that I have no use for. I hate to throw it away, that stuff is expensive... Any ideas? I'm not looking to make money off of it, I'm just looking to get it to somebody who needs it, and to help unclutter my shed. lol
