It was excessively hot, far beyond standard, and the location had been warned several times before.

    What is excessively hot?

    https://www.littlecoffeeplace.com/coffee-ideal-temperature

I call bullshit. 3rd degree burns start at 1 second at 156*, 2 seconds at 149*, 5 seconds at 140*, 15 seconds at 133*, which coffee is brewed at much higher temps.

Was MD's assholes for not offering the medical treatment payments? yes...and they paid dearly for that (which I agree with).

However, I don't need a label on any coffee container stating its hot. It better be hotter that 120*

Given coffee makers boil water to 195-205 degrees it reasonable to believe ANY coffee freshly brewed will indeed cause 3rd degree burns. Given this knowledge any coffee drinker should know the risk of spilling freshly brewed coffee on themselves. So I'm with you here. I know not to touch a fajita plate when it comes to my table and most of those don't have labels and many places the server doesn't feel the need to warn you not to touch it. Maybe I should and get rich.

Right? When the plate comes out sizzling, my natural thought process is "it's hot"...

However, that's exactly why the server has to say "this plate is hot, please don't touch it..."

According to the lawsuit, at the time McD's machines pumped coffee out at 180 - 190F. That's easily hot enough to cause 3rd degree burns. It was also stated that the plaintiff was wearing cotton sweatpants when it happened. Cotton will soak up the the liquid and not dispiate the heat rapidly.

"Liebeck was wearing cotton sweatpants; they absorbed the coffee and held it against her skin, scalding her thighs, buttocks, and groin"

That woud prolong contact between the liquid and the victim's skin. If 3rd degree burns occur at 156F, assuming the victims coffee actually was 180F, and the cotton sweatpants held the liquid against her skin I can easily see 3rd degree burns.

Do I think she was a dumbass for putting hot coffee between her legs? Hell yes. Do I think the incident was completely her own fault? Hell yes. Do I disbelieve the 3rd degree burns? Nope.

Thanks to the internet and sites like Youtube and Instagram, we get to actually see how stupid people are instead of just hearing stories about it.

What a time to be alive.

There was a copycat incident at Burger King not too long after the McD incident. I guess some guy wanted a payday as well. I never sought out what happened with that.

I don’t know everything about the case, but she was never trying to get a ton of money from them. Just wanted her medical paid. The jury awarded way more than she asked for.

I agree Jason. Guess she never figured a cup holder would be a better option than putting a really hot paper cup in between her legs.

What I find funny is people actually need these labels in real life.

Here’s another scenario. I’ve stupidly grabbed a cup of coffee from Starbucks by the top instead of the side. Dumped it mid transfer from the window to my cupholder. All over my leg and in the drivers foot well. I was pissed! That was in my last car but it took me a couple of hours to be satisfied I got it all out with my carpet cleaner. I didn’t get burned though.

I couldn’t do something like that unless it was righteous. Otherwise it’s cursed money. My fault plain and simple.
