Haven’t gone yet, and not sure if it’s considered “south” Texas, given how huge the state is, but there’s Escondido Draw Recreation Area in Ozona.

As far as trails in the 956 area we don't have much like the San Antonio and west Texas, get with the store 4WheelParts in McAllen see what the locals do

Yes sir, usually the beginning of May. It’s a ton of fun, I’ve been the last 2 years. If you take the tundra I can’t recommend sliders enough and expect a little body damage from rocks and trees. There are only a handful of trails there that a Tundra is physically too big for.

I got an 89 toyota pickup that I’m fixing up with my dad so that be sweet to take it out there. I’ve been seeing so many videos of people on trails that it makes me want to try that out.

Shoot me a pm when it’s trail worthy, we hit trails several times a year normally. We just vary which vehicle we take, just did Moab and Colorado in the Tundra in July, we’re taking my wife’s FJ to Hot Springs, Arkansas next month and we usually hit a few parks in Tx in between. We’re always open to more people joining in.

Which trails in Colorado did the Tundra tackle and how did it fare there and in Moab? I’d like to try Imogene Pass one of these days but don’t know if it’s doable with the Tundra’s long wheelbase.

Like TexasTundra said, it’s the Lonestar Jamboree at Barnwell Mountain Recreation Area in Gilmer, north of Tyler. Toyota Trail Riders hosts it every year. The very first or second one even had Ivan “the Ironman” Stewart make an appearance! Toyota Trail Riders meets every month at Pappas BBQ in Dallas on Thursday evenings, but I forget which Thursday it is. Good group of dedicated Toyota off-road enthusiasts.

Most of the trails at Barnwell are narrow, wooded ones better suited for jeeps, Tacomas, 4Runners, FJs, etc. I haven’t taken the Tundra yet, but have taken other vehicles, the biggest being a fullsize Ford Bronco which gained quite a bit of pinstriping even in the easier 2-diamond rated trails. But it’s been many years since I’ve been, so they may have cleared the branches and brush some since then.

Barnwell requires an OHV sticker from Texas Parks and Wildlife
Dept., or you risk a ticket from the Game Warden. The sticker is only about $15 or so. The park sometimes sells them if they have any on-hand, but quickly run out during big events. You can sometimes find them for sale at ATV/dirtbike vendors, but the past few years I’ve had no luck finding them locally, and one store even refused to sell them unless you also bought an ATV or dirtbike. I’ve had to order mine over the phone by calling TPWD in Austin.

Imogene was a cake walk in the Tundra, I just drug my ass on a few spots as normal. Black Bear wasn’t bad either just need a good spotter on the first switchback, the rest was fairly simple. The only “hard” trail we did in Colorado was Poughkeepsie Gulch and the only hard part was the wall which would be very difficult without a locker of some kind, my Auburn LSD worked great. Moab was my favorite, we did a trail thru Arches NP that I’m not sure what it’s called, wasn’t much just scenic and fun. We also hit Hells Revenge which was amazing, scraped the front bumper and rear bumper a lot there but was able to tackle Hells Gate fairly easily.

Awesome! So when you say you dragged a bit on Imogene, was it just the rear bumper or tow hitch? Or are full skids underneath probably a good idea? Moab sounds like another fun trip, too, as do the trails at Arches NP.

I don’t have any skids :anonymous:... I didn’t hit anything underneath, mainly just the hitch, little bit the front and rear bumpers. I’m actually in the process of having a high clearance rear bumper made right now. Skids would definitely be a good idea though, they’re on my to do list... another good idea is to remove the trailer plug bracket, I just take the bolts out and zip tie it behind the license plate.

Almost all of the damage is from previous trips but a stock bumper will drag a lot.

Please post pictures of your rear bumper. I’ve thought of doing the same later on down the line.
