A bit late in the day (it's been a long one) but here's some non-weather Texas BS.

Today in 1846 the Republic of Texas officially transferred governance to the State of Texas after becoming the 28th state of the United States. Also today in 1913 the first prize was inserted into a Cracker Jack box. Make of that what you will.

You can install 6-7 whole home backup 20-22kw generators for the price of one of those trucks with a 7kw generator .
I never liked being in an all electric house with no wood stove, but especially didn’t like it this past week. Will do like the above poster and get 2 of the smaller 2500kw Westinghouse igen inverter generators so I can run them in parallel for 4400kw and we can live in the RV if we run out of power for a length of time again.

4.4KW with those two in parallel will at least give you the ability to power some type of heating device and few other critical devices. It would be a good start.

Whole home generators would be nice but you have to have a fuel source to go along with them. Natural gas or large propane tank.

I gotta admit my KO2s and 200 pounds sand worked out pretty good this week in my 2WD.
Got to where I needed to go without issues..

Sand will end up in the dog's sand box..

Something similar happened to us in Beaumont in the mid 90s. Had a freak ice storm knock e d out power for at least a week. We experienced the same things. It was crazy

3 days worth of the same freezing rain we just had for 12 hours was it? I remember it as a kid. I played basketball and the net was completely frozen. Needed a broomstick to poke the ball back out through the hoop.

Yep everything was like 2 inch thick ice , collapsed the power lines. My family slept into the living room the whole time to be close to the fire place. My dad and I took turns doing fire watch through the night. I also remember thinking it would be cool to try and ride my bike down the street on the solid ice road......it ended predictably lol

I’ve been eyeing that place since before I moved here. I know a couple of people back home who frequent that tract pretty regularly. I’ll drop a nugget when me and mine find some time to “rough it” out there. Work schedules for the wife and I are always brutal until spring though.

Hey Texas members. Anyone in the Austin area that can give me general thoughts on the area? Flirting with the idea of relocating to the Austin area for a job opportunity.

I hear good things. I have many coworkers from that area who are always going back down for the weekend and would like to live there if work allowed. From what I can tell, it's growing like the rest of Texas so if you want to have more country living, you need to definitely pick something on the outskirts.

Just moved here…. Here are some generalizations.

Rule 1 - Housing/Property is EXPENSIVE AS FUCK in the Austin/Greater Austin area. $200+/sqft for homes and you won’t find land anywhere close(depending on what your definition of close is). You’ll probably need to go an hour out to find anything truly reasonable. Research the living hell out of it before you make any decisions.

Rule 2 - People here suck at driving…. Just when you think that part can’t get worse, you’ll find yourself in a school zone; and it’ll be worse.

Rule 3 - Generally, people are pretty awesome here. Aside from the pushy ass Travis Co. homeless dickheads, everyone is fairly chill.

    That’s about it.

    Don't forget:
Good Barbecue, among other culinary delights.
Plenty of area lakes for boating and skiing.
Texas weather. Both a blessing and a curse. If I read your location correctly you're in Oregon looking at lows near freezing and highs in the 40's. It'll be close to 80 in Austin this week. Next August, however, you'll wonder when the gateway to hell opened.

Look East - the Bastrop County area is nice and it's a quick trip to Austin with only a few stop lights on HWY 71. Getting expensive out here though and with the Tesla plant almost built, people are going to start figuring it out.

I’ve never lived in Austin, but I’ve visited many times and always thought it was pretty cool. And I especially love the scenic Hill Country nearby. My main complaint about it (and this goes for most big cities) is the traffic.

As for housing costs, pretty much every major city in Texas has had explosive growth and demand has gone through the roof. I’m south of DFW, which used to offer relatively affordable housing 10-20 years ago, but not anymore. I’ve heard Austin is even worse.

Housing cost seems to be a common theme here. Crazy thing is that according to what I have researched, Austin is still cheaper from a housing perspective than Portland.

    What he said ^

If I didn't have the Disabled Vet Property tax exemption, we wouldn't be able to afford to live in this state. Seriously.

I like Austin, there’s a hell of a lot more green scenery than up here in North Texas. Plus the food is pretty damn good down there. The lady and I are headed that way next week for a few days to hike and eat as a matter of fact
