    Hi errybody,

Brand new (<3k mikes) 2018 Black DCLB TRD OR taco (pic attached... I know who cares:) with brand new wheels & suspension has the had the dealer stumped with a mystery CIL for over a month. Looks like I’m headed for a refund (at best).

Silver linings... now I get a “do-over” on picking a truck.

The taco is fun and its a solid truck, but the lack of throttle response and interior space limits are real (I’m 6’-4”, I have a lead foot).

I realize now that I could have saved a bunch of money on my taco if I had just gone with an SR5 given that I completely replaced wheels/suspension, so that’s my current plan with the Tundra:

    -Cement Supercrew Tundra SR5

-Front Suspension: King/Fox coilovers + Camburg UCAs

-Rear Suspension: King/Fox + Deaver leafs

    -Body mount chop

    -35s

    -Color matched grill bezel

    -Pro grill

Question: Anything I should be aware of starting with an SR5? I’m fine with basic interior/sound/etc... just want to smoke out anything major I’ll regret going this route.

Thanks in advance. Be gentle :)

SR5 is a great foundation (not a leather fan). Been happy with my 02’ SR5 for years. Was contemplating a new 18’ SR5 in Cement but decided on reinvesting back into the 02’ for 3 more years.

That sounds like a wise choice. A lot of guys start with SR5 and build. That’s what I did and no regrets. Came from Tacoma too. I’m doing almost everything you mentioned except aftermarket leafs.

I am 6'-4" also. I had a Tacoma for 16 years and it worked fine, but I upgraded to a Tundra this year and there is no turning back. I love it.
You also have the right approach by starting with a fairly basic SR5 if you plan on doing suspension and wheel upgrades. No sense in paying for it twice.

Thanks! Maybe I don’t need leafs on a tundra then(?). Taco stock leafs wilt/sag almost immediately, so I figured same...

My cousin (6’-4” also) even told me taco wouldn’t have enough room. I’m getting dumber/deafer every year.

I was stoked when my 08 Tacoma had a leaf spring recall. Got them replaced for free and they still had sag. I think Toyota leafs just do that. I went with shackles on the tundra with stock leafs.

I've had Tacoma's since I was 18. Bought my first new truck was a 96 Tacoma. I've had several 1st gens and 3 2nd gens. Bought a 2014 tundra, wrecked it, bought a new 17 tundra SR5. By far the best truck I've ever owned. You will not regret it. DO IT!!!!

I test drove a new 2016 Tacoma, I knew as soon as I left the dealership, I wasn't gonna buy it. The power in the new ones, aren't near at strong as the 2nd gen 4.0's. After the test drive, I started looking at the Tundra's.

When I saw the new Tacomas I said that will be my first brand new truck. I frequented the forums and realized there were some issues early on and by the time I was ready I had just gotten a Ranger bass boat and figured I'd go with the Tundra for the pulling power I'd need here in the Ozark Mountains. I drove by a place on my way to work everyday and saw a guy who bought the first white DC TRD OR Tacoma (exactly what I wanted) that I'd seen. A few months later it was gone for a couple of weeks then back, humm. A few months go by and he's got a blue TRD Sport. A few months later a lifted MGM Tundra. Well my wife works there now and talked to him, issues from both with one (I assume the white one) needing a new transmission. He told her he thought he was through with Toyota as he'd had several Tacomas in the past put he gave them one more shot and bought the Tundra. Loves it!! Excuse me the air is a little bit thick in here now I think I need a Kleenex.

@BlownOutTundra I just got SR5 CrewMax 4x4.....and love it. It had ugly base rims, but I worked out deal and got TRD 18” rims w/ AT’s. May not matter bc you have another set up in mind, but may be easier to sell to offset costs of new rims/wheels (just a thought). Has a lot of bells and whistles IMO. My kids love the power back window....pleasant surprise I realized a couple days after purchase. Seems more spacious than our GMC Yukon.
My only regret is not getting cement.....good call. Actually love the silver gray metallic, but cement is just magical....in a manly way of course. Ditch the Tacoma

Welcome, can't help talk you out of the taco. But, just to add a little mayhem, you might look into ADS shocks and C/Os. The Deaver, Alcan, whatever, is a good idea IMO
