@turbopomsky yeah man I would like to know where to look for that metal tailgate plate as well...that would be good to have.. several times you see tailgate get bent up cause something heavy hit them square on the top tailgate portion bending the whole gate.. this would protect at least some parts of that blow.

I know someone has posted pics of an aftermarket strut installed on their tundra because they didn't know there was already one (hidden) from the factory.

It was exposed/visible with the tailgate open. Might work for your situation to have double the strut

Just ordered mine from NewEgg, as my tailgate falls like a rock.

Does it help at all with the lifting of the tailgate?

Is there anything out there that would help with the lifting/closing? Imma gettin' old and need some assistance!

Just added my strut. Took 5 minutes. Best $10 (plus $8 shipping) I have spent on the Tundra so far!
Easy down and easy up. I do wish it was a bit slower going down, but much better than the tailgate dropping like a rock!

Thanks all for your inputs and guidance. I love this forum!

Don’t forget the mount assembly also cracks sometimes so if the new strut doesn’t fix it, probably need that new mount the strut thing attaches to.

Well after my much improved tailgate experience I still would like it with more control when lowering. I’m going to order an aftermarket one on Amazon and see if that works or is too much. Will post what I order and how it works.

So I didn't observe that adding a function strut DID help with closing the tailgate. I was mostly worried about it not dropping like a rock. But this was an added bonus.

You can always grab one of these, tailgate assist strut

you could even put one on both sides if you’d like. Think it was like $20 bucks on eBay

I would like to find this. Any tips on the part number, mfr and seller on EBay? Can’t find a single one on Amazon that fits 2015 Tundra.

did you have to modify anything?

    thanks!

this is the one I got. I think I sent an offer for $20 or $22 and he accepted. The one Shane posted is the same. It say 2014+ tundra but it’ll work on the 2007-2013 models as well

Was this part number ever found? Looking for the same. Mine snapped off and my strut is floating around in there.

I just replaced the strut this morning. From start to finish about 10 minutes and what a difference. I didn't even know there was a strut there until last week when I removed the taillight to install
LED back up bulbs. I have a tailgate mounted ladder to help me get up and down from the bed (older guy who doesn't do jump offs any more) and even with the extra weight of the ladder, the opening and closing is smooth and much less of an effort. Below is the link from Amazon for the one I purchased.

It was found but it doesnt matter because there is no way to attach it since the way it stays in from the factory it is some how rivited in place. Another member found a ball that does fit using a ground down nut. He was nice enough to send me one and I ground down the nut to fit. You can see my thread here.
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/broken-tailgate-hinge.107167/
The OEM ball part and photo is on page one and the fix is on page 2.

Resurrected - The Stabilus tailgate support strut at RockAuto is now $10.60. Just ordered it and two replacement Stabilus hood struts ($15.94 /ea) for my 2011 CM. All three were getting weak.

I tried one after market tailgate assist shock for $22 and the gate fell harder than with the worn original. Every different version on Amazon had several reviews saying the same thing. My conclusion is that if you can't afford the OEM version for around $100, just live with the dropping tailgate. I bought my truck new in 2010 and it took 10 or more years before it started to wear. I ordered one from a Toyota Parts website that is actually a Toyota Dealer. It is $110 shipped. Done.
