I was really looking forward to putting an exhaust system on the 5.7 V8 until we decided on the 3rd gen. I'm not a fan of the "duck farting in the bath tub" V6 exhaust mod, so she'll be staying stock.

167k. We're in Michigan and these trucks are endangered species here. It came from California/Arizona this past winter when he picked it up. Its not perfect but there's not a spot of rust on it.

No kidding; that frame is immaculate considering its age! You've certainly found quite the gem. Congrats on picking that up!

On paper, the 3rd gen sounds like it would supersede the 2nd gen when it comes to performance. Significantly improved gas mileage while adding 50~ more horsepower and a higher towing capacity at 2,000 lbs more than its predecessor. If I'm being offered around 50K for a 'high mileage' 2nd gen, I partially lean towards considering a 3rd gen at that price point because as I've said, on paper, the 3rd gen comes out on top but in reality (granted the 3rd gen is still a very new gen), the 2nd gen has set a new standard of quality and expectations with the million mile tundra and impressively towing a space shuttle and having a generation that has lasted around 14 years, similarly to the 4Runner's 5th generation.

It's certainly a difficult decision for me for sure.

I drive 55 miles to work and am getting almost 21 mpg. The Tacoma got 15.6 mpg. Plus the dealership gave me $28,000 for the "17 with 87k miles. MSRP on the Tundra was $65k, I got it at invoice pricing for $60k. Plus the comforts I could never get in the Tacoma like, heated/cooled seats, heated steering wheel, Panoramic roof, memory drivers seat, and that huge 14" infotainment screen. I tell people I feel like I'm driving my Dad's truck. LOL

If looking to haul a cattle trailer and particularly a gooseneck you are looking at the wrong truck. You need to be looking at 3/4 or 1 tons which Toyota does not make.

Not that you’re necessarily asking my opinion, but I think you’re asking the right questions. And from my point of view, you’re drawing some sound conclusions. Much of which are conclusions I’d echo myself.

The overall aesthetics of both gens don’t really appeal to me, especially the interior of the 2/2.5 gens. But with the price points of late model used with lower mileage being so close to that of new 3rd gens I think it’s logical to cross shop. As long as you can get a solid warranty. Hell even with a used 2nd gen (or any used vehicle) you’re still charting into unknown territory with regard to usage history and maintenance.

You think so? I mean I'm not planning on towing a dozen horses but I do plan on towing 1 or 2 cows MAX, which I feel the Tundra could handle, and that would not be a daily tow. That would be a tow to/from and that's it; same with retrieving a Kubota, or Utility SxS.

Gooseneck and carrying capacity would be biggest concerns. If just short distances you should be OK.

That almost certainly means highway miles, which are typically less taxing than stop/go city miles.

When it comes to Toyotas, I would be more concerned about proper maintenance, service records than some miles. Carfax or documented service records, and 100,000 miles is jsut getting broken in!

I bought my 1st gen '00 Tundra from my FIL w/155K miles. I knew he was super anal about service intervals, and he had records of every oil change, dealer service, etc. ever done to it. I drove and towed with it for 6 years, sold it w/205K still going strong.

I bought my '01 4Runner from my wife's cousin w/111K miles. Again, I knew it's history and it was her baby. Sold that one still going strong w/210K-ish miles.

*Worth noting* When I bought the 4Runner, my credit union made an exception to their rules about loaning money for vehicles with over 100K miles specifically BECAUSE it was a Toyota, if that tells you anything.

Neither of them ever needed anything more than maintenance and wear items.

I found my '19 as a one lease turn in, CPO w/20K miles and expect to be driving this for quite some time.

Absolutely! So there were actually 4 trucks I was looking at and here are the details including the best OTD price the dealerships offered me.

2020 SR5 with TSS Package (meaning the southern state package, not the safety sense) 4x4 5.7L V8 Quicksand with 60,000 miles (36K OTD)
    2020 SR5 with TSS Package 4x4 5.7L V8 Calvary Blue with 40,000 miles (42K OTD)
    2021 SR5 with TSS Package 4x4 5.7L V8 Cement with 80,000 miles (38K OTD)
    2021 SR5 with TSS Package 4x4 5.7L V8 Cement with 30,000 miles (44K OTD)

I ended up going with the one that has the least amount of miles, but it also came with much more features than the other trucks I looked at despite having the same trim/package and was in the best condition cosmetically and mechanically. It gave me a better sense of security and comfort levels, because I much prefer having something with this low of miles, so I can ensure that proper maintenance is being performed when it hits huge mile markers like the 60,000 mark where you do a ton of work like your spark plugs, coolant, transmission, etc. Another reason why I went with that one is because the dealership I went to didn't give me any BS fees or add-ons. They were straight up with me once the negotiation commenced. It was the only dealership that had given me the direct OTD price, so it didn't include any reconditioning fee, certification fee, or GPS locator fee. The first worksheet and every subsequent worksheet generated throughout the negotiation only had the asking price, the discount amount, and TTL, and nothing more; so haggling was a breeze. Essentially, you'd be look at around 40K more or less if you were to still shop around. I know you have very similar requirements as I do when it comes to shopping for a Tundra so that can be what you can expect to pay or haggle down to. I hope that helps!

What in the shit balls is going in with this center dash?!? Some kind of aftermarket kit?

    IMG_5837.jpg

Here’s the link to the FB marketplace listing. Appears to be a shade tree used car dealer. Normal red flag, continue browsing scenario for me. But…a few of the aftermarket items on the truck would normally be present on selective owners. Such that would typically associate with be attentive to their vehicle maintenance and upkeep.

I could be completely wrong, as I have been wrong before. Ask my wife. Scammer with stolen pics is verify much a possibility.

I've seen some Tundras upgrading the entertainment center to something similar to that. I heard you still get to keep your factory steering wheel radio button functionality and it also has the ability to see your rear camera without having to shift it into reverse.

That's a good find if it truly is an entertainment center similar to the Alpine one linked below.
