Synthetic oil, conventional oil, does it even make a difference?

I only recently switched to full synthetic as I had it in my mind that it cost a lot more. Probably from my younger days working at auto parts store when it was way more expensive. Once I actually looked again I was surprised at how much price came down. Agreed, not really any reason not to use it now.

Same reason here. When prices were 2-4 times more for synthetic, I used conventional but now it's a different story!

I actually think GTX is a synthetic blend. There has been discussions about it on Bobistheoilguy.com.

Edit, sorry, missed the other posts.

But is there a 0W-20 API SP/GF6A thats conventional? I think that 10W-30 can get away with it because they don't need the synthetic to make it change weight. A 5W or 0W-30 is proably non-existant in a conventional

But, to your point, I probably would run a 10W-30 in the Tundra. At least once I am out of the powertrain warranty. I am about to run a 5W-40 Euro in my Ecoboost.

10w can be semi-synthetic or conventional. 0w and 5w are likely synthetic.
It’s not cold enough in South Dakota even for 5w.

Do you see what you degenerates have done? This poor asshat asked you all about oil in the tundra then you literally made him rage quit by making so much fun of him and his asshatery. Then spent some time talking about absolutely nothing but then... Then...

.... Then you all started talking about fucking oil!

Yet, in approximately ten hours it's currently at 60 posts. Apparently, there's interest, even if it's only to argue about it.

You could try what I do with posts that don't interest me; just ignore them. :)

Thats true. For those of us who live in warmer parts, winter nights for me are 45 degrees at the low for example, 65-70 at night is more average for the year. 0w-20 here is probably spending almost no time in the “0w” range. It’s just not that cold in the pan even on a cold start

    Function before sparkle.
I’ll say it again: Manifold meals are going to be a thing for the 2022’s.

First it starts with recipe sharing and “what’s the best tin foil wrapping” methods. Next it’s a bolt on rotisserie for the engine bay (fits non-hybrid only though).

That is really the only part where conventional is inferior to synthetic - the ability to flow in very cold conditions. But most of us will never experience conditions when the oil will be a limiting factor for the engine start. Gasoline won’t even create enough vapor pressure when it’s that cold.

I thought the same thing. But oil threads never die.

    And the was boat names.

I agree. I run 10W-30 in my GX. Just not GTX. I picked up 10 quarts of M1 EP for $28 when they had the rebate 6 months ago.

I got this from my papaw. Seems to do fine in my Tundra. It really quieted down the diesel tick. I hate that commie 0w water that comes in these from the factory.

I may be stating the obvious. In my '97 T100 with V6 3.4L I ran conventional dino oil until two years ago. Changed the oil at ~3,000 miles for 250,000 miles and at each oil change the oil was dark. Dare I say black. The '17 Tundra with full synthetic at 6,000 miles the oil on the dip stick is till a wonderful honey/amber color.

Remember what Lawyer Larry says: YMMV.
