Part number for my particular fuel pump is 77020-0C090. $529.31 list price and what I paid for it at my local dealership. I gave them the VIN and that's what they had for me the next day. I've had it for a few days now but haven't opened the box. I found the same part number for $373 online. Shows the same list price as what I paid from my dealership. I'm gonna try to return it and order the one online. No sense in paying 155 more for the same thing. That way if it still does the surging I'm not out as much. However I'm not sure they will return it yet. If they won't return the pump I plan on installing it Sunday and illI report back. I plan on pulling the bed instead of pulling the gas tank. With 232k miles I'm afraid I'll break a tank strap or damage he evap system. My truck has absolutely no rust. However that many miles on parts can cause problems when pulling that tank. Plus I can inspect the bed really good for rust under the liner etc. I've lifted the bed liner up and it looks really good under it. I've changed many truck fuel pumps this way and it's always made more sense to me to pull the bed vs the tank. Any objections?

My brother just did this on his old F150. Said it was easier than trying to drop the tank. Good luck and hope this takes care of it once and for all.

Call the dealership and see if they’ll refund the $155 as you’ve found it online. I’ve seen them do this in person while in line buying parts at the stealer.

Yeah. Its worth a try, especially if you still have leverage to return the item. They’d rather discount than take a return at dealer.

I meant to call them today but as usual it's been crazy busy at work. Hopefully they are open tomorrow and I can remember to call them. My truck is surging right now and ethanol is reading 20%. It hadn't acted up in a few weeks. I'd really like to replace the pump while it's surging. Then I'll know whether it's fixed or not.

Returned the fuel pump today. A dealer in Georgia has the pump for $343. Not sure what shipping will cost but I'm sure I'll come out better this way. No manager at my dealer today to discount the pump. And if he was there I'm afraid he wouldn't return the pump. Says right on the receipt no returns on electrical or special order. Now to order the one from Georgia. It won't be shipped until Monday at the earliest.

Fuel pump installed. Ethanol reading was 20.9% before replacement and truck was surging. Replaced fuel pump and ethanol reading went to 9.8%. No surge felt so far but it was only a short test drive. Don't pull the bed expecting to get the fuel pump out. You absolutely have to drop the tank. It was nice seeing no rust under the bed though. This tundra has 200k miles more than my first one. It's 2 years older and has no sign of rust whatsoever. My first tundra had surface rust under the bed and on the hitch.

2011 Tundra 5.7 with 112000 miles. I have the same surging issue. I’ve done many of the same steps. I will be very interested in the verdict on the fuel pump. I will gladly spend the money and change it if that is the fix. Just hate to spend the money and time if it does nothing. Please update once you have a few miles.

I'll definitely keep you updated. It's looking promising right now. Fuel trims changed from what they were. And alcohol density has been well below 10. When its raining and cool out and I gas up will be the ultimate test. For whatever reason that seemed like when it would surge the worst and alcohol density would go the highest.

Last week before I replaced the fuel pump, the ethanol reading barely got below 7% since I've been able to monitor it. Since the fuel pump replacement the ethanol % has been as low as 3.5%. I really feel like the problem has been solved. $364

That is good news. What was the name of the dealer you ordered your parts from in Georgia? I’ve been checking and haven’t found an original ffv fuel pump that cheap.

It was actually McGeorge Toyota in Richmond Virginia. I had found one in Georgia for a few dollars more. I've gassed up a few times and even when it was raining. Still no surge and the numbers look great after replacing the fuel pump.

I've made purchases from McGeorge as well, their prices have always been worth a look when shopping around for factory parts.

Fuel pump was identical to the one from my local dealer ship for $220 less. Just had to wait a few days for shipping opposed to picking it up the next day.

Coldjustin how are you holding up w surging issues (or lack there of) w mileage on the new pump? Just picked up a first gen 4.7 and she’s stumbling as you we’re describing. I’m almost positive it’s a fuel issue. Used to older diesels with inline filters and know the symptoms of clogged fuel/dirty fuel/not enough fuel and this stumble feels like it. But as a side not this stumbling creates a “little” jaunting on what feels like the motor mounts? Not sure, never had a tundra but your post has been a great read regarding getting a resolution.

A few thousand miles on the fuel pump now. Has ran flawlessly since replacing the fuel pump. But yours being a first gen is a totally different animal. I've read of valve cover/pcv issues.

Many miles on the fuel pump. Never surged since replacing it. Fuel mileage is up a bit as well. Strong running truck to have a ton of miles on it. I'd drive it cross country and never raise the hood!

Anyone with a first gen and a 4.7 solve this problem? My 2006 DC has been doing this for about a month and a half. When I go to accelerate it will occasionally shutter the entire truck, similar to how it would if I were feathering the accelerator on and off. If I continue to give the truck more throttle, it will get better, but I can still feel the truck "surging". It will happen the worst usually when I'm going up an incline.

Checked all coils last weekend and they pass the visual inspection and appear to all have similar resistance. I've cleaned the TB, MAF, PCV, plugs are new as of 15,000 miles ago (Denso plugs - though I am going to pull them and inspect tomorrow too to see if they are still in good condition), and I've ran a bottle of injector cleaner through the tank. Transmission temps do not change while this happens and RPMs do not appear to be affected. There are no engine lights either.

I'm leaning towards either a failing torque converter or possibly a fuel pump issue. I don't want to start throwing money at those repairs since they are expensive and a time consuming repair. Thoughts?

Reading post on light surge at acceleration. I have issue now after getting truck back from dealer with cam tower leak repairs. Noticed it more tonight going to work. Will be calling in morning. Ran good til repairs just had dreaded oil leaks both sides rear. When left dealership there was no issues. Drove all highway home at 80mph. Didn't driver truck for a day and half. Now light surge at acceleration slow start stop and turning.

I am having this exact issue on a 2016 with only 66k miles. Still under warranty but without a code how can I convince the dealer to replace the fuel pump? They had the audacity to tell me the jerking/surging was "normal"

Try some Royal Purple Max Clean, it’s worked for me in the past. You may have a coil pack that is getting ready to fail.

Had this exact same exact problem with my truck starting in January 2021 that slowly kept gettin worse until it started tripping the computer. Between 2200 and 2700 rpm during acceleration it would pulse/miss/surge ... whatever you want to call it. Between this Tundra forums and a couple others I noticed it's a fairly common problem with the first couple year models that had flex fuel somewhere in the mid 100,000's mileage wise. I'm at 186k. Thanks to those who posted about this - it probably saved me a few trips to the Toyota dealership and lot of money going down the laundry list of all the "let's make sure it's not this" bs (maf, computer reset/re-flash, O2 sensors, spark plugs, spark plugs wires, ect ect ect) before they finally dropped the tank and changed out the fuel pump. First thing I did was buy an OEM fuel pump online and the local COOP station guys changed it out for $200 labor. Problem solved. Hope this post keeps someone else from wasting the time and money too and getting straight to fixing the problem.

Just wanted to say thanks for this thread. Replacing the fuel pump on my 2010 Sequoia with 140,000 miles fixed my problems. I started looking at the MAS and throttle body because of hard starting and weird surging as I was accelerating. I also checked the ethanol levels and they seemed fine about 9-11%. I had my local dealership replace my fuel pump and the problems are solved. Only bad thing is I have to take it back in on Monday to have them fix the fuel gauge they broke while replacing the fuel pump. Ugh.

Thanks again for this forum and thread!

Just thought I'd chime in and say thanks to everyone that contributed to this thread.

I have a 14' 5.7 Flex Fuel, 80k miles. Started getting the surge during acceleration, typically around 2200-2500 RPMs. Started off happening intermittently, having up to a month in between occurrence. Then more frequent until it was pretty much always happening in that RPM range and then I threw a CEL. Confirmed the lean % readings. MPG tanked down to 11.5. Checked/cleaned all the cheaper culprits like MAF. Bought a pump assembly fro Sparks, $380 shipped.

Dropped the tank, replaced the pump and immediately could tell the difference. MPG is at 13 and still climbing. Runs like new again!

    Thank yall!

Thanks for taking the time to keep this thread updated, and including all the possibilities you had already explored and attempted. I created a post about this issue this morning and, after broadening my search to include "surging" instead of "pulsing", was very grateful to have found your thread with a fresh cup of coffee in hand.

As I just had a timing chain replacement, more than happy to eliminate any problems there as a possibility. Going to top off the tank with 87 and reset the ECU with techstream before committing to the fuel pump replacement.

Grateful to have a path forward in either case.
