I understand that with Magnuson an updated exhaust is recommended but not required. What are the potential consequences of not upgrading the exhaust?

Less "Vroom, VROOM" sounds when you mash the gas:mudding:
Honestly I believe it takes a little more custom tuning if you have more mods versus stock. @1UPPER had a custom exhaust from the headers and back and needed slightly more tweaking with the setup that he used to have.

If your considering doing a Magnuson SC I would not install long tube headers. It makes tuning the truck a lot more difficult. Most of the tuning kits for the magnuson are based on stock headers. So if you change them you will have to go with a custom tuner like HP. It adds up quick. Is your truck a flex fuel?

I wanted the extra power the SC provides while towing and still using the factory exhaust. I didn't want the additional noise and/or possible drone on longer trips. Like 1UPPER said if you do go with Long tubes and a free flowing exhaust you will run into some tuning issues. Matt with OVTune can help sort them out with logs and revisions too...

A BAMuffler cat-back is the only change that I would make to the exhaust if I ran a SC.

I’ve discovered that when supercharged, no matter what exhaust you have, you make the same power.

trust me, this was devastating when I discovered this fact since I put braces in my kids face by selling tundra exhaust.

thst said, while there is no power gains, the stock muffler is extremely restrictive by design, and it is so on purpose. That’s the cheapest way to make it quiet.

by replacing the stock muffler with a Bamufflers standard system you remove the huge restriction and the heat that comes along with it. Our standard systems retain the stock tailpipe which keeps from losing low end torque.

please feel free to give a call to discuss this topic in further detail.

So it doesn’t reduce valve heat
Thanks Keith. Do you have a muffler that removes the restriction and stays quiet? I’m one of those guys that think the stock exhaust could be quieter but would love more power towing over the Rockies.

I have some experience with a “quiet” aftermarket muffler.

I have the magnaflow jumbo size. The case is 5x11 and it is 22 inches long. It is a 2 in 1 out similar to stock but a straight through design. On idle it has a small rumble, but is pretty quiet when you’re accelerating. I met one of the executives from magnaflow in person and he had told me before i put it on that it will get quieter as the rpms go up. He was right in my experience.

The one thing I’ll say, it now drones. Keith makes the only resonator that kills any and all drone. It really works.

My first tailpipe had a small oe resonator bulb after the muffler in it. I now have an oe tailpipe without that resonator. Whatever that piece is helps drone, as my magnaflow now drones pretty bad at certain rpms where as before it had none

I can’t say it makes more power than stock, ive had it for 8-9 years now and it’s probably not much anyways.

Your comment reminded me that I should probably re-install the resonator that came with my BAMuffler. Today is a good day to do that, thanks!

Your engine is basically an air pump. When you change something in the suck, bang, blow process, you're changing how the vehicle was designed to manage and utilize that airflow. Honestly, if you want to slap some sort of forced induction on any vehicle, you should be thinking about the entire process, including a new tune to work with it. It's not as simple as slapping a SC on it and calling it good.

EDIT: Should also mention that when you do add more power you should also look at whether your engine and driveline components can handle it, as those may need upgrading too.

On my S/C'd 3.4L Tacoma I was able to add several degrees of timing to my tune with just a change from stock manifolds to headers. I was able to tune out almost all the Low RPM High Gear ping (it was a 5spd). I don't know if headers would have the same effect on the 5.7L, but would guess that it might and would certainly examine that.

    Not nearly enough room here!
While Keith gets back to you,I can assure you that he's able to build your system as quiet as you need. I've had his 10" single on my 2010 for several years. The sound is exactly what I was after. You won't mistake it for stock, but it's light years away from some of the juvenile sounding "off the shelf" systems that just happen to fit our Tundras.' You may be a candidate for one of his 12" systems and even then,it'll still make you grin like a monkey when you get into it!:D P.S, with NO DRONE.

I re-installed resonator today, and just returned from a test drive - What a difference!

I go into more detail in my build thread.

The drone of my truck was awful without the resonator. One short test drive and on it went.

When you run the Magnusson blower, the engine is no longer an air pump, the blower is. Not only is the blower and air pump, it’s a positive displacement air pump. When those rotors are turning the air is forced From one side to the other. If there is something in the way, it gets blown up.

I’ve seen guys custom tune our trucks with long tube headers and supercharger, and their times are the same as my truck. There’s very little power in the exhaust when supercharged. It’s all about the cam phasing and pulley on the charger. Exhaust is simply there to reduce the pressure from the stock muffler.

Are you running the same day on the same track? A lot of factors involved with running different times...

One thing I noticed 20 years ago with my 4V SVT Cobra and it still holds true today...Is you cannot make these newer 4V engines sound like an old school push rod big block. And if they are 4V VVT you can also forget about cam lope as well...
