This is exactly me right now too. I got my new motor in and while it works perfectly (slide back & forth / tilt up & down). When I close the sunroof there is a small gap to the rear of the window where the tilt up is raised a bit. If I bump the tilt up/down button I am able to position it to a closed position so it is closed but its no longer an automatic process.

I too pulled the motor and manually closed the window(sunroof) then reinstalled the new motor and it is what it is I guess.

Yeah, mine doesn't seem lined up quite perfectly, but calling it good. Just be sure you got the point where its actually closed (no free play in the roof when pushed on from below). it does an odd cycle when it tilts and closes and all, just have to watch it to see where closed actually is

Hello everyone. This may have been posted already but I wanted to share my solution to the sunroof motor issue. When I took the motor apart, one of the brushes was stuck open. I was able to work it loose, but be very careful not to crush the brushes. Getting it back together also takes a lot of care not to damage the brushes.

The brushes in the motor are on springs to allow them to continually rest on the rotor, even as they wear down. The brushes seem to get stuck in an open position, away from the rotor and that's what keeps the motor from working. I didn't take pictures, I'm sorry.

Just fixed my my 2012 Tundra sunroof that was stuck open using the post from twolaneblacktop and the pictures from gasman675. Thanks to both of you! Saved me a lot of money. Getting the motor/drive re-seated between the brushes was tricky. I ended up releasing one end of each spring (per twolaneblacktop) so the brushes would stay pulled back and out of the way. With the drive barely past the brushes I had enough room using small tweezers to push loose ends of spring back behind the housing which put tension back on the brushes. Sunroof operates in all directions but did get a little out of sync on the full closing of the tilt. Just have to tap the rocker switch to cinch it closed- no biggie.

I appreciate all the help here. FWIW I wasn't able to repair mine, but I ordered a replacement motor online and it was a very easy swap. I found it for less than $450 shipped at cheapestfactoryparts.com. It sounded a little sketchy but they were great. Legitimate parts dealer out of Ohio. I couldn't have been happier with them. It's a lot for a small part, but better than getting ripped off at the dealer for twice as much.

I've been to three dealerships and they all claim the head liner has to come down to switch the motor. The truck is under warranty but I don't want them messing with the headliner. Where is the fuse?

Nope. Check post #18 on motor removal. You should be able to clean up the motor to be able to close the sunroof.

I removed the sunroof motor from my 2014 tundra, just so I could manually close my sunroof. Unable to...It wouldn't budge. Two strong guys pulling simultaneously, still wouldn't budge. I'm thinking the belt might be off the track.
I also disassembled the motor, and it was clean as a whistle. Nothing to wipe clean. I literally never used the sunroof... maybe once or twice in the 8 years I've owned the truck, and may be why it still looked brand new.
What was strange was how the white grease looked. It looked brand new, almost like someone recently greased the rails and the gear that pulls the belt through. I did just drop $680 on a trip to the dealership for some maintenance and repairs. Coincidence? Maybe.

Has anyone else not been able to pull the sunroof closed after removing the motor?

Wanted to follow up on this thread in case it is helpful for anyone. My experience was similar to several on the thread-I had tilted my sunroof up then it wouldn’t close. Switch activation would result in clicks but no movement. I used the various instructions on the thread to access and remove the motor. For my 2014 limited, in addition to the two screws under the sunglasses holder I had to also remove two screws located under the square plastic panel that houses the two sunroof switches. That panel comes off by using a thin screwdriver to depress two tabs on both the left and right side of the panel. Like some others on this thread, my issue was a brush that was sticking in the brush holder and not making good contact with the rotor. I’m guessing this is the case with several of you that experience a similar situation and have relatively few operations of the sunroof. I would also say-don’t try to move the sunroof once you get your motor out. Just run through these motor inspections/repair and put the motor back in. When I did that, the motor worked fine and the sunroof was in sync and didn’t require any type of calibration. Hope this helps.

I am new on this site. 2014 Sequoia Limited with 106k miles . This was a $$$$ saver for me. One of the brushes in my sunroof motor was also stuck and not making contact with the rotor. Cleaned it to make sure the brush moved back and forth with the appropriate spring action. Reassembled motor and it works perfectly now. Many thanks, next project is the automatic rear hatch switch works about 2 outta 10 times that I try it, both at the switch in the cab and the switch at the tail gate, PH

I used some electrical contact spray, I think its mostly ether, because it dries very quickly and leaves no residue. Most important thing is that the brush makes contact with the stator (the spring action moves the brush up and down without getting stuck away from the stator), PH

Thanks, I am going to get some WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner and try that. My brushes dont move by themselves at all. I have to manually push them back and forth, but it is an 08' Sequoia....

I agree, especially when they’re stuck tilted up. I can’t push it closed even with the motor out.

Clean and free up the motor brush's as shown in Post #18. My 2014-1794 stopped in the tilted up position. You could hear the motor clicking when the down switch was pressed. One of the 2 brushes was stuck and wouldn't move freely. release the spring, gently slide the carbon brush backwards out of the bracket. Q-tip and alcohol the inside of the plastic brush retainer bracket, clean the sides of the carbon brush, slide it back in and test that it moves freely.

2 Torx screws, 2 - 10mm bolts, 3 Phillips screws, that's it, EASY way to save $500+ on parts.
    Just follow post #18 pic's.

I used dental floss (and a second set of hands) to hold the spring loaded brushes back while I slid the commutator back in. Sun roof works as normal.

I was concerned about the sync issue some folks have had so I made sure not to mess with the glass and worm-gear position. Just take the motor apart and put it back the way you found it, you shouldn't have an issue.

    It's not hard AT ALL.
