I’ll try that too, tried earlier hammering a flat head in there to try and lodge it in enough to turn.

Checkout that tool I linked to earlier. You won't get a tougher flathead or more useful tool for under $20 (got mine at Home Depot)! I like it because I can put a wrench on the square shaft for more torque. This is definitely one of the tools I throw in my bag, no matter what type of job I'm headed to do. I hate to admit, but I've had to do the angle grinder cut a slot for stripped screw more than I should have to LOL...this tool always comes to the rescue.

I must use them wrong, I have never had success with any type / size of extractor bit.

I went and tried to hammer the extractor in again, still won’t bite and just spins when on the drill.

Not sure what you have. But the ez out bolt extractors I’m referring to you don’t use a drill. Drill a hole with a normal drill bit, Keep drilling the hole with incrementally larger bits until you can’t go any bigger without cutting into the threads. Then hammer that extractor in. Slow turn with pressure. A drill would almost certainly cause it to spin.

    Obviously counterclockwise to turn extractor.

I’ve got Speed Out, the double sided one with the drill bit on one end, and a reverse threaded screw on the other.

This is an easy one. Forget the extractors, if the head stripped the bolt is likely seized and you run a good chance of breaking the extractor which then turns into a much bigger headache.

Since you have the other bolts, grab a drill bit just slightly larger than the threads, drill into it until the head pops off. Remove whatever it's attaching and grab the exposed threads with vise grips.

I’ve never had to do that before, so how exactly does the head come off? Just drill deep enough? Forgive my ignorance, but usually I don’t have this kind of trouble to this extent.

Is the bit camming out like when a Phillips screwdriver slips?

Not at all, it literally hasn’t budged. Just the entire head is stripped.

So the bit just rotates without lifting?

I agree with @Festerw . Just drill it out, you can put a rivnut in and use a new bolt. A rivnut tool will be substantially less than the dealer.

Just drill the head off. Get a drill bit slightly larger than the size of the threaded section of the bolt and drill straight and centered. When you get past the head, it’ll basically fall right off because you removed all the material holding the head to the shaft. You don’t actually need the threads do you? If not your hood to go. If you do... I just recommend left hand drill bits and it’ll either spin out, or you can just go until you can put a tap into it and rethread it.

Haha can take a torch to it too. Or weld a nut to it. But why make it a bigger project than it needs to be. You start drilling with a bit bigger than the bolt now you need to retap the threads the next size up.

    Right
    So what is stripped then?

I appreciate your offer, but I’m in Florida. Would have loved to and case of beer would have been on me! Don’t need the threads at all, just a replacement bolt once it’s out.

The head itself is stripped. The Torx patter is completely gone.

Please try what I suggested. The input in this thread is great, but I had the exact issue you are having but had two stripped out. I had both out in minutes. I even reused them to mount it back

I agree, the best thing is get a metal cut off wheel for your dremel and cut a slot in there, just make it a good one so you have some meat to push against. I’d also whack the screw driver with a hammer a few times to help loosen it.

    If not drill the head.

Get one of these . It bites the head of the screw, bolt , shaft , whatever it bites down on and will unscrew it. Had a fucked head bolt on an old f250 I had , dealer couldn't even get it out. Bought this , and it popped out so easy I was both elated and frustrated I had spent so much time doing other stuff to get it off. Lol

You gotta drill well into the shaft of the bolt. Not just where the bit would go. If the bolt is 1” long drill 1/2” or mor into it.

Yea I couldn't remember what the hell it was called, had to Google it lol

In looking at the ops pictures though it looks like there's some channel there it's in, I can't tell if you'd be able to fit my solution down in it . Can't tell from the pic

Basically the bolt is shaped like a T so you still until you break the connection where they intersect. With the bit slightly larger than the threads you're less likely to screw up the threads and it's easier than a larger bit.

Couldn't get it out with large flathead and something to add some torque to the screw driver?
