Hey, parts is parts! Especially when pieces are banging around in your oil pan. ;-)

This ensures thorough and complete application of motor oil to all surfaces of the parts in question, by relocating them directly to the pan!

Honestly, s*** happens. And with the miles OP puts on his trucks, it'll happen to him first.

First thought? Let them replace the engine, even if only a short block, and keep on driving. It'll be a newer revision anyways, you like the truck, and unless there is an endless series of engine replacements it's really not going to affect resale of what's left when you're done with it.

If you're going to replace it, and really need to be driving a truck, I'd look at any of the 3L turbo diesels out there. However, you're going to see a lot more comments about things failing on the other truck forums, no matter how bad people think the 3rd gen is. There is a lot less chasing "truck won't start after gassing up" and other electronic gremlins being chased on stock trucks, and never mind the blown seals and other things you find there.

    Cliff's:
    - the problem is, every other mfg has their traditional problems, and all of them are worse
    - the GM half ton suspension setup is a huge change in driving feel for me, coming from a Tundra, to the point my "nope!" meter is pegged Maybe the latest gen is better there.
    - the GM v8's all have valvetrain issues (as in, the chance being higher than one would expect)

WRT to oil change intervals and weight - this isn't the 70's anymore. 75% of my truck's miles are towing, and I have run stock OCIs and cheap synthetic 0w20 the whole while. Actual lab work on the oil says it can go about 14k in the circumstance it was used in. Yeah, it's black, but even in the 70's that told you nothing about the state of the oil other than the color.

The one thing about the OP's situation that is a little puzzling to me, though, is that Toyota is having the dealer do a lower end rebuild. IMO they should be giving him a new motor, or at the very least a new bottom end. Unless maybe they would do the rebuild back at the factory, or maybe send a specialist to do it.

from what i have seen, most of the time toyota only does short block repairs if the other components are still good.

Do you mean short block? A small block is not the same thing.

My only experience was with an old 1987 IROC Camaro with SBC 350 that spun a rod bearing with 49,000 miles while I was on a road trip. They gave me a new short block assembly. But maybe the original was too far gone after I drove it knocking and with zero oil pressure 1000 miles to get home from FL. It was a Sunday and the damage had already been done, so I was going to drive it until it stopped. But it made it.

Anyone reporting this issue with a 2023 yet or not enough mileage to see if it persists with this model? Build date on the reported issues is helpful for better context and helps avoid a stigma of “all 3rd gen are bad”.

I have not seen any 2023s with this issue or heard of any. My father in law bought a 2023. He loves it. Has buyers remorse though.

Because his truck was 10k more than mine. He didn’t want to add OEM stuff afterwards like I did. His was 74k total with taxes. He got a longer bed and the TRD off road package. Mine was just a 4x4. Plus they charged him for his WCP color.

Updating my post. Toyota is officially repurchasing my tundra. I don’t think I’ll buy another one anytime soon. I think I’ll drive a used truck for a few years and see how these pan out.

So I put down 26k on this truck. Paid 58,915.00 total out the door was 64,277.00. I owed 32kish. It had 44k miles. I’m walking with 22k in my pocket. The mileage killed me. But I made it work. Even negotiated for a bit more. Got all I could. I submitted an offer to them for me to keep my truck. They didn’t like it. So now they can have it.

Knocking sound in engine started today . The same day I was bringing in for 25k service.
Shop Manager came to listen and they kept truck saying “ sounds serious “ .
I have a showroom loaner initiated by the GM of the dealership. This is my 4th tundra . Truly cannot believe this has happened at 25k mileage .

Yeah, that sounds like mine. I made it to 44k before mine bit the dust. I have a 21 ram big horn eco diesel now. I love it. I do miss my tundra. I’ll give them a few years to sort that engine out.

How’s the Ram compared to the Turdra? I was going to purchase an Eco diesel, just heard bad stuff about their fuel systems, maybe now it’s been sorted out…. Like 30 mpg?

It’s been great. I had some dried water spots on the inside of my back window right when I bought it. I brought it in for a leak test. They said my third brake light seal was bad above my window. They resealed it. Just saw where there is now a 10 year 150k mile warranty on my model year for that seal. Luckily I caught it before any damage to computers was done. I drove the truck home from Ohio to Houston. I got 30.9 mpg on the 964 mile trip. I use fuel additives to lubricate the pumps and such. No issues. Plenty of torque. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles my tundra had but all in all it’s a great truck. The best part in my opinion was it was 20k cheaper than my tundra.

My 2022 Tundra SR5 is having the same issue. Truck got put in the shop on October 19th and is still currently at dealership waiting on parts. Do you have a phone number or email for the corporate office? I have been reaching out to the dealership I purchased the truck from but it seems like they are trying to ignore me.
