I hear you. I have been looking a little. I honestly haven’t even looked at a another Tundra. Looked at Ram Rebels with a hemi and GMC Denali with the 6.2Liter. Might check out some 21 Tundras.

Wow. That is one hefty mileage charge.

This is just so disappointing to hear.

Have you considered a HD gas truck? Something without cylinder deactivation of course.

So, are they offering you less than what you purchased it for? And purchased direct from dealer?
Maybe look at a 21 Tundra instead

edit: someone beat me to the 21 suggestion

They aren’t offering me less than I paid. Just charging me a lot for the mileage. I was thinking 3-5k would have been acceptable. But if I take their offer this truck has cost me well over 10k to own it for just one year. My mileage was 44k. I was counting on keeping the truck another year at-least and the mileage wouldn’t have gone up much this year. I was slowing down a bit and getting rentals for my job instead of driving my truck.

The $10k mileage charge seems reasonable to me for 44k miles. But if it was me, I'd just have them repair it.

@JpHTX wow this is really a rough situation. Sorry you are going through it. Can you please share the build date of your Tundra?

$10k @ 44k miles is roughly 22 cents a mile. isnt that comparable to a lease mileage?

And POV reimbursement mileage rates, that reflect full ownership costs, are ~ $0.60/mile these days, IIRC.

Best of luck. IMHO The hidden cost of fuel
Economy mandates to consumers is engine failures and defects as manufacturers go through a learning curve using
complex technology to get big power and decent mpg from smaller and smaller packages.

Sorry to hear about the trouble with this truck, early adopters seem to suffer the most. Just to clarify the title of this thread, while the 3.4L V6 is most certainly a small block, sounds like they are doing a short block rebuild? vs. a long block replacement which typically would include all the rotating internal engine components minus the intake and accessories. They are gonna re-use some of the internal rotating assembly in your existing block and just replace the identified failed parts. Would be a no-go for me in an engine that ate a bearing and sent some of that metal onward. A short block replacement would even leave you with the existing trucks heads and cams, which may also have been affected by metal circulating in the oil, also a no-go for me. In a truck purchased new within the last year or so, I would be asking for a replacement long block, or a favorable buy back. Not just about the miles you've driven already as it is your down time and loss of faith in Toyota. Should you have gotten to drive the truck for free for the last year? No. Something on the order of what lease payments would have looked like minus some inconvenience goodwill payment towards keeping you as a customer would seem fair. Good luck moving forward, remember, it's just a truck.

@PERRY1060 November 2021 the first offer was almost 14k in mileage deduction. I told them no that’s not acceptable as this entire situation wasn’t my doing. I trusted their truck and it let me down. They are coming back with a better offer hopefully. I told them I would have taken the repaired engine if they gave me a new warranty.
I was told no at first. But now they are rethinking it. By the way, Toyota sees everything you post on social media.

Brutal, man. I second the suggestion to check out a '21. I beat the crap out of mine. 41k miles. No fuss whatsoever. You can get them loaded up, too, if you like the TSS features, dual climate, CarPlay, etc. It is overbuilt and underrated. Join us dinosaurs! :transformer:

Some of the gas engine HD trucks are pretty reliable, too. The main drawback to an HD rig for me is size and maneuverability. It becomes an issue off-road pretty quick. My Tundra, on the other hand, looks like a bloated whale, but its turn radius and maneuverability is closer to a midsize.

@KNABORES I would take the repair if it came with a diminished value check, plus a new power train warranty. We will see what happens. I agree with you and I argued with the dealership. About metal throughout the engine. The parts will supposedly be inspected before being reused. I guess if it’s not right then it will be fixed again and again if need be. I’m all for a favorable buy back. I put 26k down on this truck and would only walk away with 17k of it if I accepted their first offer. I’m definitely not satisfied with that. I would take a replacement truck but I don’t want to pay the difference in mileage. Next best thing is a buy back that is favorable to me and I’ll move on. Probably go look at some 2021s with low mileage. Try and let them sort this new truck out.

What I don’t understand is why charge for mileage? Do they fix it a resale it and that’s why? Or do they just strip it or sell it off at auction?

Interesting this was a crank bearing failure. From what I understand these kind of failures are usually caused by lack of appropriate oiling.

I think the 10k recommended oil change is way too long for this high output, high performance engine with a very light 0w20 oil. That might have been ok for NA engines, but not in this application, imo.

Another issue is that most dealerships don’t use Toyota oil; they use the cheapest 0w20 oil they can buy bulk.

Just an example. If you change your 21’ Tundra oil at 5k miles, the oil still looks translucent and not too dirty. Try the same with any turbocharged engine, including the 22’ Tundra; the oil is completely black.

Because that’s how the lemon law works in Texas. They are following the law unfortunately, it’s not wrong. Just screws me pretty good on a replacement truck.

I saw this my first oil change on my Tundra and was surprised. My motorcycles usually have pretty black oil by 3k miles, though I can technically run them longer, I go with 3k because inexpensive oil change's better than performance degradation. Pulling my Tundra oil on a much bigger engine after a longer 5k interval, which isn't even technically the 10k suggested interval, still looked cleaner. And my first two changes, I got to see a LOT of that damned oil as it was busy spraying -everywhere-.

My first oil change on the Tundra @ 1k. It had a slight shiny sheen to it.

My good ol’ 19 E85 5.0 Stang with 0-40w Pennzoil Euro Ultra Platinum comes out black at 3k. That’s with a K&N oil filter. But I’d expect that with direct injection and E-85 in the mix.

I’d still like to run a thicker oil on this engine. Don’t want to beat a dead dog though.

I wonder if in places like Kuwait or Saudi Arabia they run thicker weights….

a lease with mileage penalty would likely be more than $10k for a year or so of driving. That’s only $833 a month for 12 months. It’s reasonable, but I would negotiate for better.
No one gets what they deserve, they get what they negotiate.

Most lemon laws prorate by 100k mikes. So he would eat 44 percent here. Lemon law is only good deal if vehicle can't be traded in.

10k for 44k miles is not bad

They aren't charging for mileage. They would honor the warranty and fix it for free. But if they give him a new truck then they would charge him for the part of his old truck that he "used up" by driving it 44,000 miles. That's all. We can endlessly debate what that amount should be, but they have specific ways to determine that value.

If you go back and review the records at a similar time in production history there were plenty of "my 5.7 dropped a valve" issues.

I truly hope that this is a VERY rare incident. At least as rare as the 5.7 valve spring issues. Two in a week is concerning, especially in such a small sample size.
