Starlink Mini Sunroof Mount

Can’t you mount it on metal portion of your roof with magnets, instead of sunroof so you can actually still use sun roof? @Mallcrl mounts it outside with no issue with theft. I’m still keeping this option open. Maybe from outside wire cable in through outside top cab light to keep wiring looking clean and just permanently leave STARLINK outside

I’ve seen that one. Unfortunately dont have a sun roof. Could work for others.

OK, now I'm confused after watching this video.

Earlier it was said the dish has to be aimed manually to get a signal. I assumed that was from a stationary position. That video claims it gets a signal even when driving down the highway.

Can someone explain?

 

Electronic Phased Array Antenna, kinda like the AESA radars in newer fighter jets where the dish doesnt have to move.

Just so I'm clear. The dish has to be aimed manually to establish a connection, after which it will remain connected regardless of the direction of the dish, including while driving? Is so, that's pretty bad azz technology.

 

We have the the old starlink that moves and I believe employs same technology. When we connect it while camping we have internet almost immediately no matter where the dish is placed, about 5 minutes later it moves for optimum reception and stays in that position.

 

That's how my home Starlink works, too. It automatically moves to the optimum position wherever I place the dish, as long as it has a unobstructed path generally to the northern sky.

But this mini system sounds a bit different. If I understand correctly, it doesn't have to be aimed in any particular position to stay connected, even while driving.

 

Correct ... there's a youtube video I seen where there is a boat load of satellites in orbit for the system to work correctly. Shark fin antennas probably work in a similar way for gps and satellite radio.

 

This is all mostly correct from my experience as long as your view isn’t obstructed by trees or really bad weather. If it’s facing slightly North, I think you get slightly better signal, but as long as it’s pointing up with no major obstructions, you should be golden.

 

I figured the cab was aluminum honestly so I didn’t even consider that it might work that way. But my sunroof is so big, idk that I even have the real estate for this except on the glass. Which is ultimately still an option and fine, but idk about the wiring. I feel like you’re asking for water intrusion if you run through the brake light, and I also would think the door seal would destroy the cord over time. But, there may be access through the cab between the bed and cab.. I know that used to be a thing on trucks.

 

There's room behind the moonroof on my crewmax to fit the Mini.. It's close, but it fits with the Trio flat mount

 

how do you run your power wire?

 

it isn’t installed on my Tundra as the motor blew the day after I did the test fit… but I would come out through the wiring harness grommet under the passenger side rear seat and then up between the cab and bed

 

I just saw that setup. I don’t have it. Not sure about dust or water intrusion

 

It just look simple. Put up top, run cord inside. That’s it! When not in use just unplug and remove from top of vehicle. Nothing permanent and probably takes less than 30 seconds to do everything. Just a bit of inconvenience, but simple.

 

I mounted mine to an UpTop Overland Rack using extrusion bars the Savage mount and several types of tamper resistant bolts. I power it while driving using the outlet in the bed and have a small Jackery with a solar panel when parked for work, tailgating and camping. Unfortunately the Savage hail cover has started to warp

 

This is what I did and it works great.... except... When it's 105 outside (Nevada) the unit overheats and doesn't work properly. I think the glass amplifies the heat when sitting in the sun.
Might try suction to the back window 1st. Then going to make a mount for the bed rails and try it under the tannue cover. Starlink says it will work thru fiberglass, and it's a little safer out of sight.

Added a switch today to turn it on and off..

 

If you come up with a bed rail mount, I’d love to see it!

 

Here's the rough draft version...
Works like a champ with the magnet, and if the magnet doesn't work, I can bolt it to the plate if needed..
Clears the bed cover by about 2".
The cab doesn't seem to block the signal, my radio and phone both hooked up right away..
You can put it in the bed anywhere as long as you have enough wire.

 

Very nice.. I really like this idea.

Takes me less than 10 seconds to put on and take off. Easy and functional. I think it’s the best way to mount. Nothing permanently mounted. Thought about mounting inside vehicle, but considered possible obstruction of view and it won’t be mounted in an angle that’s optimal for its performance compared to leaving it outside. Plus, I would not want to have a potential internal projectile if ever in an accident.
