SR5 Stereo Upgrade

Hey guys, just traded my taco in for a 2010 SR5 crewmax.

My first big addition is going to be a stereo upgrade and backup camera. Are any of these a better choice than the others? I only need backup camera hookup and android auto, the rest is icing.

I want it to look close to factory style for the stereo, do I need to get a new trim kit or anything?

 

Those brands are all good. Yes there is a trim kit needed....it matches the dash. Most car stereo shops will have it or can order it for you. IIRC, when I got mine there were 2 different ones depending on your trim.

 

I'm leaning alpine because it's so slim, and they make a slim amp to mount to the back of it. It's also the cheapest.

 

Hard to go wrong with any of the known brands that you are considering. Several on here gave Pioneer as well.
That Taigate latch camera works great.

The dash kits come in different styles, Glossy flat etc.
You will also need a harness to connect the HU.

Depends on what you want out of it. Something simple, plug and play type. Go with the Alpine or Sony. If you want more control and ability to adjust, go with the Kenwood. One thing that I really like about the Kenwood is the Stage EQ. It will raise your front stage to where the sound comes from above the dash. The speakers are mounted low in the doors and therefore sound stage is low. But the Stage EQ corrects this and lifts the sound stage up. It's a dramatic improvement.

As for the headunits you posted, the kenwood most likely will have the best features and options. Though thats also why it is quite a bit more expensive. Its hard to say much about the alpine and sony cause they havent really been fully focused on the aftermarket demographic like they used to be.

They still make good stuff, you just have to make sure they incorporated the important features you want. Also pioneer is neck and neck with kenwood when it comes to having the most current tech. Pioneer also has a wide product range that offers all kinds of options at damn good prices. Its not an easy choice nowadays.

I've had my eye on that Sony for a while. Looks like a winner.

 

I went with The DMX905S. It’s the excelon series so it comes with a 2 year warranty and the higher voltage pre-amp outs. It also plays the highest bitrate music files of any of the head units that I researched. I found mine for $420 new from an EBAY seller and there are still some available on the web new for $499. I can’t compare actual performances to the others but spec wise the Kenwood wins and it sounds very nice!

 

That dash kit will work but they come in flat as well as gloss black. Since the rest of my dash is gloss black I went with gloss to make ti blend in. They usually come with the adapter plug that will connect to the factory harness. I got a last year's model Kenwood for about 40% off about a month ago. I think it's the 9704. I really wanted it because it has the GPS built in. Around here once you get into the hills you loose cell internet and I didn't want to be not able to find something. It probably wasn't an issue but I also like the cheaper price. Although I gave up full wireless android connectivity (but I kind of need the phone plugged in to not drain the battery).

 

You pose a good point. Do you know if the Garmin enabled units let you load the hunting maps like on their walkies?

If you do the install dont forget to ground the parking break wire so people can watch movies or music videos while you drive.just make sure your bot doing so lol

 

Little confused, you're saying ground the wire as opposed to attaching it to the parking brake wire?

The Pandora/Spotify Control and multi Bluetooth connectivity features sold me on this one. Just didn't think android auto was worth the extra money

Yea parking break is a ground when engaged as explained to.me any way. So if you put that wire to a ground you can use the video part of the stereo any time even while driving.

 

But keep your eyes on the rd please lol

 

Ran into some trouble, where is the nearest grounding point? And is it safe to test the stereo without hooking up the parking brake and reverse wires?

 

Installed, don't mind the wires hanging out of the button area, I have to crack this open again when I install the backup cam and I'll tidy up.

This thing honestly brought my speakers to life, and these are the non jbl too. Very happy.

 

The PAC RPTY11 will put CAN hi/lo at your stereo and allow you to retain steering wheel controls (if you have them) and also give you a 12v reverse output.

Also, I can't say for sure on Kenwood, but the days of just grounding out the parking brake wire are over. At least on Pioneer and Alpine. The wire needs a pulse to be bypassed so you need to use some sort of bypass relay, usually $15-20.

Yes, once that wire is bypassed you will unlock video in motion, as well as unlock certain settings menus like bluetooth settings.

 

Oh I see. Yeah that always irritated me in my Tacoma. So if I can mess with settings while in motion with it grounded that means it is configured correctly, and if not I will need the bypass?

 

Yep, you got it! Check bluetooth settings specifically - that menu seems to always be "grayed out" unless bypassed or hooked up. Keep us posted!

 

I replaced my head unit, all six speakers, added a sub and two amp's. all factory speakers are one way. replacing the dash speakers with a two way and a 400hz bass blocker made the most difference for the lowest cost.
