Nobody is using antiseize on the plugs anymore? I would pop the plugs just to put that on. Well maybe.

Antiseize can prevent thread galling but it also lowers the torque spec by 10-20% - use with care. Modern iridium plug threads are already plated and there’s no need to use antiseize. NGK for example has a nickel chromium plate (IIRC) and are designed to be installed dry.

Any time you have dissimilar metals in contact there will be a redox reaction. In the old days of steel plug threads and cast iron heads all you needed was a little engine oil. The plating or antiseize is intended to act as a sacrificial metal barrier that separates and protects the threads of the aluminum head and steel plug (prevents galling).

That said I’ve been known to use a tiny dab of copper antiseize on spark plugs but I’m super careful not to over torque the plugs.

I used to really love them back in the day, but their shipping has gotten very $$ and very slow. At least last couple times I used them. So now I look elsewhere first.

My service tech said last week since I have an extended warranty if I do this myself I need to submit a letter, and show part receipts. Dealership wanted about $500 to do job I got the parts at Rock Auto like most.

Since this is the emissions warranty and not engine warranty, seems pretty aggressive to even state that the entire 125k extended warranty can be voided over air pollution.

Anyone else written up a letter to prove they did home maintenance? I plan to do my plugs once it's not 90F+ and miserable outside. I have 2k miles till 40k.

My Tundra just hit 40K and the manual requires spark plug replacement due to emissions control warranty. The right side (passenger side) is fairly straight forward and the left side (driver side) has a lot more stuff in the way. I opted to have the dealer do it for me. It cost me 509.00 and that was with a 100.00 off coupon. At O'reilly's the plugs cost 26.00 each and at RockAuto they were 15.00 each. To me it is a shame to have to change out plugs at 40K, I wasn't expecting that.

Meh, read your manual and it won't be a surprise. Don't wanna pay, do it yourself.

Finally got around to ordering these. Still $13.02 at Rock Auto. I’ll have them next week sometime. I know I am getting a new engine but I am not expecting to get that for a year or 2. I just turned 53k so I am a bit behind.

I just tried doing mine, the 3 on the passenger side were not too difficult with the information in this thread, however the 3 on the driver side were pretty buried in there. I ended up taking the car to the dealership to see if they could just change those three, they said they would do it for just labor as long as the parts were OEM and I had a receipt to prove that. I took it in, and the tech looked at it and quoted me 5.5 hours for labor just for the driver side. They wanted almost 800 for the work. Something doesn't add up there, so I declined that. They said that they need to remove the entire intake to get to the plugs. Something smells fishy there.... Anybody have any recommendations on getting to those last 3 plugs on the drivers side? No way I'm paying nearly 800 in labor for them to do this. Others have claimed 500 for the complete job including parts, so is this tech just not qualified? or are they trying to rip me off? FYI this is Harr Toyota in Worcester MA. For those in the area, to give warning to others.

5.5 seems high. Are you sure they said intake as in intake manifold or just intake as in the air box? Go to a an independent shop or put your purse down and do it yourself.

Is that really necessary? I have no problem doing most things myself, but there are a lot of probably very expensive things that need to be removed, disconnected, etc. to get access to those plugs. I don't have small hands, and even with everything removed it's very difficult to access for me. As for the intake, what the tech said to me was that the procedure was updated recently and requires them to remove the "entire intake" to access the plugs. I call BS on that. I have no problem taking it to an independent shop, I just don't know who to use, since I've done all the maintenance on all my cars for the last 25+ years.

Patience and few beers get this done in less than two hours.
You need a good set of extensions and flex heads. You will have to unclip few things, specially on the passenger side but you can do it
Really no need to get ripped off.

Just changed plugs 1st time at 90,000 miles. 2023 to Toyota sequoia, V6TT
/ Hybrid. Took about 3 hours, but I’m very methodical, and next time should be able to do in about 1.5 hours or so. Part of the problem is you have to basically climb up into the engine bay. I also spent a lot of time just figuring out what clips needed to be removed and what brackets needed to be taken off. Now that I know exactly what to do next time should easily cut that three hours in half.. also, I don’t know why they say do it at 40,000 miles, but I never experienced any change in fuel mileage or engine running rough, and with the new plugs, I noticed zero change.

Mind posting pics of your plugs? Hybrid is a bit more complicated than non....very interesting it only took you that long when dealers are claiming it's like a half day job. Lol

Just for context, my 2022 F-150 work truck says to change plugs at 60k miles. It took the dealer an hour to do the work and cost was $411.

The plugs also ran about 20 bucks a piece but they also replaced the boots, they said the plugs looked great and they even wonder why they have such a short life under the ford manual.

So if your in the 500 dollar realm probably not out of line compared to what a Ford will cost as well
