40k plugs is not new for these types of engines. My BMW N54, that bitch went thru plugs, coils packs and fuel injectors like underwear…. An occasional fuel pump. But man when that thing ran like it should, it was a total sleeper, a freaking beast. In-line at that.

No challenge at all. I've just done enough wrenching to know that seemingly simple jobs can turn into a nightmare. Like when I swapped the driveshaft u-joints on my old Jeep CJ recently. Everything went smoothly until I snapped a bolt off in the yoke when reinstalling the driveshaft. That turned into an all weekend bloody knuckle disaster.

Which will make changing the spark plugs really easy because the cylinder heads will be off the engine block sitting on a work bench!

    Alright, I just finished mine.
Time: about 1.5hrs, where I spent probably good 20 mins just looking around figuring sh** out.
(I think this job would take 45mins the 2nd time around, maybe 1hr tops)
I did NOT remove any of the major components shown in the PDF someone linked before. Only loosened or removed (driver side, cyl4 for sure) a couple of brackets, otherwise there is no way you can pull the coils out.
Pass side: unplugged probably 4 connectors to give the wire loom enough room to move, and removed a couple of bolts to let that wire loom move enough out of the way to remove coils on cyl3, especially.
Driver side: bracket by cyl4 (i marked it as "2" on the pic for some reason) needs to be removed, and another near by loosened. a connector and a hose removed on whatever that thing is in front of cyl6 plug, then move it out of the way just enough to get things in/out. Same as pass side - a few connectors unplugged, but nothing compeltely removed except for one small bracket.

    Cyl1, 2, 3 are easy to access.
Cyl4 needs brackets outta the way.
Cyl5 needs bracket bolts removed and wire loom pushed away; still not too bad.
Cyl6 is the least accessible; even with things out of the way, it's tight in there. Not the worst job if you have plenty of different sized extensions/etc. If you have large hands you won't like it...but with enough scrapes and bruises you'll get to it somehow.

I took a few pics for ref. but it's hard to show exactly where and what needed to be unbolted or outright removed.
See you in another 40K miles.

    Pic:
-tools used (spark plugs are "skinny" and needed 9/16 plug socket, otherwise good old 10mm and 5/16 for small bolts)
-comparison of brand new plug vs 42K one
-driver and passenger sides, with some marks of things or bolts removed

    PRO tip:
Do this when it's warm enough outside (and the engine bay is warm too) b/c you don't want to break off conectors/tabs or have things simply crack with cold/brittle plastic. I hate to think what will happen in a decade on a job like this, when 1/2 of these things will be old, brittle and oxidized. You know how it is with old cars - tabs break off, looms fall apart, etc....

    Good info....thanks so much!
    I'm nearing 80k after 22 months of ownership....accidently skipped 40k interval

The good news is Toyota sell all the electrical connectors so if you break one just depending it and repin in new one.

You know, looking at the low wear of the 42K plugs, I think I'll wait till 100K next time this truck needs plugs replaced.
I could have (and should have) measured the gap difference...but that's water under the bridge now.

    Good idea.
...or just ask to have 1 or 2 of the old plugs back - we can then compare brand new vs 42K and 80K.

At near 80,000, have you noticed any performance issues, misfires, rough idle or anything you might attribute to the plugs?

Everybody is wondering if it's really necessary to change spark plugs at 40k miles or not... And since you forgot to do yours, you're a perfect case to let us all know how your plugs look like and if we really need to change spark plugs at 40k miles or it's just Toyota playing safe

    Sounds good!....tempted to pull one plug out & take a look....if I do, I'll post a pic

I ordered 6 new plugs at the stealership, but they are on indefinite backorder
Might be several weeks before I swap all 6 plugs (dealership has no clue when my order will be fullfilled due to a large backorder), hence the thought to just pull one for shits & giggles possibly tomorrow....
I had a 2013 gen2 tacoma (I was the original owner) & initially I drove it for 90k miles with no spark plug change (manual called for every 30k) the motor easily made it to 395k in my hands & I am fairly certain it is still running strong with 2nd owner

    yall have a lovely day
    :)

2/6 coil packs failed at roughly 60k miles
Dealer replaced them at no charge (kfalls toyota in Oregon) outside of warranty coverage (there was CEL on my dash & I scanned the error with code reader, but I can't recall the code number atm)
Not sure if there is any correlation between the failure & not changing the plugs at 40k

A few times over the 77k miles I've driven, the engine did hesitate, but I think it was due to the engine stop feature & hard braking/quick release/immediately reapplying throttle

Go to Rockauto and order your plugs for delivery in a couple of days, like any other non-dealership worshiping heretic.

I have been pricing them as I will be due in a few months. Rock Auto has the best price so far. $13 and change per. Some of the dealers are at $22-25 a plug. Save a good $40

Rockauto is rock solid, trust us on this.

    https://www.rockauto.com/help/?page=6
Scroll down for phone number, if you feel lonely or want to muse about the quantum theories involved in creation and design of spark plugs for the 17th wonder of the world that is 2022+ Toyota Tundra.

    PS:
While I'd also rather shop local/etc.............my dealers want $25+ per plug here; yeah...no.

    Did change them today
The one closer to the cab, left and right bank, where the one darker. See the pic attached. The other four where in pretty good shape. IMG_0227.jpg
I started on the driver side and it took me about an hour. The passenger side it took me about 30 minutes.

^^^ Notice any difference after the swap?

I have some slight hesitation under throttle that feels like it could be plugs, but I only have 6,500 miles so I'm inclined to think plugs aren't the culprit.

Tundras.com: 80k is fine for a plug swap!

Also Tundras.com: 10k is way too long for oil change intervals!

    I love this place
