Mini clover is the best. Only grows about 4 inches. Mix it with your grass seed will keep a stead supply of nitrogen to the grass.

WTH? Where you men greenskeepers in your past life? Seriously, I would get out the clubs with those lawns.

Well done. Those lawns look picture perfect. Jealous to say the least.

On a serious note. Start in February or when applicable with a strong Pre-Emergent. That will kill everything weed wise. Come spring put down some fertilizer and seed of choice. Imop. Fall is the best time to plant, but spring will suffice. It will take a bit for Pre-Emergent to fully work, but in time you will have a weed free lawn . Once you get established and put down Pre-Emergent every Feb, you shouldn't have to plant In the spring, just fertilize. Also I like Scott's lawn food to put down once in spring and then again in the fall. It's mostly nitrogen based product which greens the lawn. Good luck

Holy hell. I feel like I just found the holy grail.
Pre-Emergent you say? If we are still in our current home come this February I will give this a shot. We picked 9 large yard trash bag worth of weeds this weekend. That sucks.

Yeah TJ, I have a bunch of friends who use it and swear by it. It's not a one and done though. Do it every pre-spring . There will always be some that slip pass, so it's good to keep some Weed-B-Gone handy for those bastards.

The general rule with weeds is its easier to kill em pre emerge than it is to kill em post emerge, especially when you start talking about the tough to control weeds like kochia/pigweed/Canada Thistle. In my experience it's not hard to kill clover-type weeds post emerge though. Very good point @rons23.

No.nooo..you are working too hard.. It is 80% prevention 20% maintenance.. Weed and fee for your grass type about two to three times a year..don't water before 6am.. Cut to proper height..

Nooooooooo! You always water between 4- and 10 am. Never in the evening because that will promote a diseased grass. It's also a myth that if you water in the heat of the day it will burn your grass (Negative) you are just wasting time as the water you just used will evaporate quick and your grass be like....MF'er I'm still thirsty. C'mon man. Lol

"Proper height" is determined by how much leave remains after is cut..this can vary by grass type, time of year and location.. Also make sure blade is Sharpe and no chips, otherwise mower is shredding the grass instead of making a clean cut.. During drought season st Augustine is not as hydrated so the stem will not stand as tall so we lower the blade..during rainy season the stem is well hydrated and stands tall, if the blade height was not readjusted it can cut the grass at the stem harming it.

We all have start some where.. The water management department have a web site called Florida friendly yards.. They provide very efficient concepts..http://fyn.ifas.ufl.edu might have to adjust to your region..

I suggest checking out a site such as www.reddit.com/r/lawncare . I've gotten a ton of good info off there. As others have mentioned, there are a number of experts that post regularly on Youtube, also, so that's another route.

I came here to see if there was a "I'm a lawn care guy, ask me anything" thread and found this one

My reasoning was to see if anyone else purposely plants clover. We have some wild growing in our yard and we like it. I overseeded with more grass and white clover seed. Just waiting for it to germinate and grow.

From what I know, it was desirable to have a clover lawn back in the day as it is so easy to maintain, needs little water and feels great to walk on

Clover/grass blended lawns are making a comeback....at least in my yard

I've got 2 acres of "lawn", weeds are just as green as grass  and I'm just too cheap to buy clover seed.

pull up a handful and place it in a bag and go to a "REAL" lawn and garden store. They will be able to tell you what it is and how to get rid of it.
