I think people should look into the reverse osmosis straws as well. You can literally dunk one into an algae disgusting pond and get clean fresh drinking water without fear of giardia or any of the other nasty flagellates that will cause you major gastric distress.

Been researching water filters other then boiling. The Berkey systems seem to have a lot of positive reviews. Little pricey.

A little more salt than we prefer. They all have to have it, just some more than others. MRE's are good but not long term and they do spoil. Bloated MRE bag, toss it.

12 years in the military and 4 deployments, believe me, I know all about MRE's. The only REALLY GOOD MRE's are the extreme cold weather ones.

I prefer the old MREs (brown) over the new ones (tan) for sure!

Hardly any cheese any more.....or jalapeño cheese. It sucks. I like peanut butter but it was nice getting the cheese!

I've heard about it but never watched it. As a joke one father's day I gave my dad a 1943 issue can of c-rats in ham and lima beans more commonly known as ham and mfers and he laughed and tells me that he didn't eat them in Korea or in Viet Nam and is not eating them now(1989) and up until Katrina hit in 2005 I had them in my garage and then the water came and only heaven knows where they are now.

That was more scary than informative. But a good reminder about all the concerns this thread addresses-- that everything could change in an instant. And our fancy trucks won't work....

You're up late, or a very early riser?

Fear..nah not even close there bass, just more like informed and being just as prepared as one can be. And not "floundering" when a need arises.

Fear is a state of mind, not a state of heart.;)

I'll be really open about this - I'm in a world of shit if something happens but given i prepare for a multitude of life events such as if my health deteriorates, if i lose my job, if i crash my truck... through things we consider normal such as savings, life/health/auto insurance and so on - it strikes me as logical that I'd also insure myself against other "things"

I live in the wonderful state of North Carolina - every time snow even appears on the damned forecast, my local stores are out of milk & bread for about 4 days. If it actually snows - I don't drink coffee for a week - that's a pretty dire world for me. I've been confined to a house in the middle of nowhere for 4 days due to an ice storm that put 1" of ice on every surface - walking was pretty difficult - driving suicidal. I'm confident that any preparations I start to make that increase my level of self-sufficiency WILL be used. I don't know to what extent, whether it's a 4 day wait for the weather to turn or the months long recovery that Puerto Rico is going to have to go through.

So no... I don't think it's fear - it's preparing for the unknown which I'm pretty confident you do in your own way.

I live in bum fuck Arkansas, so I am not worried about getting nuked. Closest big city is Dallas, which is almost 5 hours away.

I used to own a 2015 Silverado. Now I own a tundra. I had a fear of breaking down.

This thread is about contributing helpful info and encouraging others to consider a little self preparation for their families whatever their situation. Be it natural disaster, extreme weather, attack on the electrical grid, or society in decay.

If you @Basskrazee have nothing constructive to contribute/add in helping the decent guys and gals on this forum become a little more prepared...maybe you just move along.

fear of the unknown??? maybe...its OK to have fear. fear also motivates. if you want something badly enough, you will find a way. if you don't you'll find an excuse. simple really.
