From my quick Google research it seems a HAM radio is great to have if cell phones go down. Also if no electricity or back up no way to charge your phone unless you have a hand crank generator/charger, which may be a good idea. Back to the HAM, you need a license for a HAM radio, which is apparently easy to get.

    Now I'm getting deep haha.

You're welcome anytime to move to Colorado :D

I wouldn't bug out unless I had too. Flood, fire, not enough neighbors willing to defend our neighborhood, etc. Rather stay home, but gotta plan for both.

Thermal generator. Like @Patriot said, look for dual purpose items. Solar chargers, thermal generators for cooking and heat. These can burn almost anything.

Thanks for the suggestion- check out One Second After, if you don't like the book, I will buy it from you, just to give to someone else.
I could not close the book, four days I was done. Still think about what I learned.

Think about everything have a real second useful purpose.

Just a quick water thing, just about everyone has about a 40 gallon water jug at the house if necessary. Water heater.
Don't get me wrong I've got plenty of water on hand, just saying 40 "more" gallons. And w the RO tank, 10 more.

Since we are all talking about prepping. I have a question about water. I have a few rain barrels around the house but are not BPA or not recommended for drinking water. Could I just boil the water to make it safe to drink.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
Do you have sutures, or medical staples. These will be quite important. Along with a few books explaining emergency field surgery. Antibiotics can be acquired online from veterinary websites, along with other stuff...

Start a home garden. Potatoes are one of the easiest foods to garden, indoors or outdoors.

If it's the BPA or some other compound in the plastic that you're concerned about, I don't think boiling would help, since we're tlking about a chemical compound. Boiling will kill pathogens but not get rid of toxic chemicals. Distilling, however, should work.

I have more than enough camping gear for my family and then some.

The food is what I lack

    Gear:
Enough space to sleep 22 text wise
    3 stoves
    Plenty of fuel for stoves
    Full kitchen set up
    Guns
    Knives
    Places to hide
    Warmth lighters
    Matched
    Binoculars
    Trap making skills
    Backcountry navigational skills
Friends that are huntER and gatherer savvy
And a blind toy poodle to do my bidding for me

What I keep wondering about, and no one seems to know for sure, is how solar panels would fare with EMP. I have a feeling that if given a few minutes warning, wherein I could disconnect any long wires, maybe it would survive. Three years ago I converted one of my deep wells to solar power, in case the grid went down. The other well is on the grid. I have plenty of food stored, seeds, and all the other "essentials." And in a worst case, if the solar doesn't work I still have a spring-fed pond that I can draw from.

Also, if the solar doesn't work, the deep well pumps into a 2500 gal tank. So I always have that much water on hand.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
    Basics for survival:

Water - Every living organism needs water to survive. Humans would consume an estimated 2 gallons of water a day (per person) in a survival scenario (drinking, cooking, sanitation etc). Water is heavy and not easily transportable, so this limits your ability to take it with you in a bug-out scenario. For that reason alone, it is best to 'bug-in' if possible.

Another option is water purification methods for bugging out and bugging in. Using this method there is no need to bring the water with you; however, you run the risk of not locating water for purification if you do not bring it with you.

One should aim to have a water supply or means to develop water supply for 2 Gallons, per person per day. So, let’s assume that it takes 6 months for governing bodies to form, thus leading to a supply of water, stability, ect. You have a family of 4; therefore, you should aim to have at a bare minimum, 1500 Gallons of water (sorry a few 24 packs of water bottles are not going to do...).

Protection - The unprepared are going to become desperate in short-order. Desperate people, in fear of death, will resort to violence invariably. If someone in fear of death believes you have something that could prolong their life or their family’s life, they will kill you for it.

Once must be adequately prepared to defend their own lives as well as the lives of their family. This is not just having the tools but possessing the right-mindset to utilize these tools. Things will never go the way you expect them to go, so it is best to be prepared for anything, majority of that entails mental preparation.

Guns are the first obvious choice, and rightfully so. However, one must consider a gun is worthless without ammunition. So you will need a great deal of that, I also recommend learning how to reload your own ammo.

Another consideration is that many of the people who want what you have will have guns as well. So, one may want to consider 'bulletproofing' their shelter as well as themselves.

Another great method many people use is based off of the 'Gray-man' philosophy. Do not make it seem like you have anything, if people suspect you do...you know the rest.

Shelter - Obviously people need a shelter to protect them from the elements as well as hostiles (Human attackers, dangerous animals, etc.). Things to consider are escape-routes, easily-defendable, easy-setup, etc.

Food - This is not as important as many people believe it to be. Yes - we all need food to survive and retain a healthy and functioning body. However, food can be heavy and is a constant drain of water for you. I am not saying do not have food, rather have appropriate food levels in relation to your water levels.

learning to grow your own food is a must, as well as having food on supply. Foods on supply can be: MREs, Dehydrated foods, Freeze-dried foods, Canned foods, etc. Each of the foods listed have their own unique pros and cons.

Medical - Humans can have so many things go wrong medically, it is best to prepare for all of them. However physical injury will be very likely in a SHTF scenario. Small cuts that would not have been an issue before present a much greater threat.

Having an abundance of basic First aid supplies is important. One should aim to have an abundance of over the counter drugs as well. Sickness and injury will be much more prevalent in a SHTF scenario than they are now. So, you not being sick in 10 years means NOTHING, straight-up. Look at medical statistics for countries that recently entered mass states of civil unrest, Libya, Egypt, Ukraine.

One can acquire medicines that normally require a prescription, quite easily on the internet, think veterinary websites, as well as Medical education equipment websites.

Hygiene - This is not to be overlooked and could actually be listed as a subcategory for medical. Infection is your enemy here, if you do not keep your body clean, it increases the likelihood of infection greatly.

Soaps, teeth-cleaning materials, bleach, etc. Do not overlook bleach, it has so many uses (sort of like vinegar in that regard).

Monetary - Trading goods may eventually be needed if you need something desperately that you do not have. Items from the categories above would be great as well as precious metals, Jewelry, etc.

Everyone should research this stuff and aim to improve their skills (I know it is not fun or maybe even practical...to some, but it might just save you or your loved ones’ lives one day).

Your greatest asset is your mind! Work to improve your mind with usable knowledge and skills.

    Stay safe out there kids!
