Lately I've had a few slow starts. More so when the engine is cold. It will crank just find but then its just a little slow to rev up. Drives, accelerates just fine. Just those slow start ups from time to time. Any ideas???

Check easy stuff first: posts clean, connections are tight.

Check your battery voltage and let us know. May have a cell going bad. Great thing is toyota batteries are under warranty for 8 years. If you do not have a multimeter, most auto parts stores can load test the battery.

Any off-roading lately to include mud and water? Alternator is at the bottom of motor.

Already had the battery checked. Checked good. I get under there and take a look at the alternator. Thanks for the advice

Good deal. Check all connections. Probably something simple that is causing your issues (hopefully).

I had a similar issue with my RAM.

Turned ignition truck would start would take its time to idle/rev up sometimes a little rough. Weather condition did not matter. That lasted for about 3 months
Then starting issue evolved into turning the ignition once, let it crank for a few seconds. Stop and on the second attempt
it started with no idle issues at all. That lasted for about three years. Then one day it would not start at all. Replace fuel pump.
worked like a champ. One crank truck started and no slow idle. Month later junked the truck bought new Tundra.

Wonder if it needs more cranking amps for the cold?

Mine does this as well. I live in south Texas and dosnt get that cold here. Do you have the flex fuel engine? I've heard you might have to get the ecu flashed. Keep us posted

How cold does it get where your from in Texas? Mine does this when its cold, it seems like it takes about a second or so to kick up the RPMs on a cold start. I also experienced this after disconnecting the battery for a while and reconnecting it and starting it but after a few starts it back to normal. Easy thing to do is to check, clean, and protect the connections.

By "slow to start" you mean the engine is hesitant to start, or the RPM's are slow to get up to where they should normally be for a cold start.

North Texas Wichita falls. Cold doesn't mean cold to me. Was stationed in South Dakota at one point but not with this truck. And I'm referring to slow to build rpms. Usually just first crank in the morning. But yes it is the flex fuel engine

you say the battery was checked...did you only check the voltage reading or did you load test the battery as well? just a simple voltage reading can/but won't tell you the battery is on its way out or bad.

what year and whats the mileage?

    nvm 2013
    , just noticed your signature

if all they did was hook up a little hand held, more than likely just a voltage check. Should be able to go to a Goodyear or any automotive place like that, they should be able to load test it without any issue. Even Walmart automotive section might be able too.

    Here's a good test:

Turn the key to on, but don't start, then off, then on, then off, then try to crank. If that solves the problem then your issue is the fuel pump having trouble priming.

I remember reading somewhere on here about the flex fuel engines and cold starting ( could be wrong ) something about the ecm thinking it was running e85. Mine only does this sometimes, takes a second it seems like to idle up.

Yeah it doesn't seem to be an issue. Like I said it starts everytime, runs like a champ. Just slow to idle sometimes

Is our fuel pump a gas tank drop? Or is there an access under the seat?

You handy with the tools and have access to a lift or a way to elevate the truck at least 1' off the ground? Drive your truck until the DTE reads zero and do the job. The tank is lightest then. Have a buddy help you with dropping the tank. I dropped my tank on my 05 Dodge by myself with a floor jack.

Well, then if you want to purchase the whole assembly, that is easiest. However, if your sending unit is fine, I would just change out the pump. It is pretty easy disassembling the pump housing, replace pump and put it all back together.

The whole module is ~350.00. The pump is just 70.00. Have you verified that your fuel pressure is bad? I would start there.

My slow to start has turned into an every now and tben fail to start. She will try and crank but no fire. Sounds likes it not getting fuel. Second crank starts and the rest of the day it starts fine. Just the first one in the morning. No codes or lights thrown though.

Sounds like you have an air leak and losing prime.

Do you have the ability to park at an angle where the truck is nose down?

Overnight. Then see if you still have a slow to start, or failure to start. If you have some vehicle ramps, back up on them with the nose down the driveway. That should be sufficient enough.

What I am trying to troubleshoot, is an air leak in the system. Most driveways or garages have a slight slope to them. If you have a small air leak, the fuel will run back to the tank overnight. When you come out in the morning, you have hard to start or failure to start since the fuel has lost prime.

Makes sense. My driveway isn't very sloped but I got some ramps. I'll try it out. Thanks man!

I would sure hate to see you drop a tank, the cost of a pump, and still have the problem. This happens a lot in the diesel world, more so than gas vehicles. Usually when you have a vacuum leak, it is a fuel leak as well due to higher pressures. Most diesel lift pumps are 8-13 psi, where a fuel injected gas motor is much more.

This might help as well. As much as I hate linking this site to here....
