You would be surprised how fun the KTM 350 EXC is to ride. Thing has plenty of power and isnt as snappy as the 300 2-smoke.

Doesn't have an hour gauge, but its been through 25+ plus enduros, 17+ Dual Sports, and working on our hare scramble every year. Not including street riding. I killed 3 odometers and at least 30k miles. It was rebuilt around 25k miles just because I had the suspension off to get redone by WER. The mechanic found everything in perfect condition except for 2 cracked compression rings.

I’ll definately look into it. I’m not going
To disregard a great bike just because of motor size.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I really messed up my elbow in the Mojave Dessert. Ripped my tendons. We took my buddies Chevy since my Dodge diesel broke down again.

You guys are so lucky. Riding is outlawed where I live in NY. So bad that undercover will act like they are broken down or injured to bait you in and then they arrest you and impound your bike.

Another reason I need to leave this place.

So many options. Crazy what a few short years and so much has changed. Very exciting for sure.

I looked at quads as well. The Can-Am Renegade XXC is just a bad ass machine. I like the power delivery, 4x4 capability, and other uses (winch, plow, etc). This would be a far better idea for family use. However, this is my toy...:D 12,299.00:eek2:xxc.jpg

The CRF450RX was recommended, and researched this bike. Pretty sweet setup for all around, and the X model did really well on the race track. The changes are rear 18" tire, engine mapping, larger fuel tank....9300.00
The only thing that really bugs me about this bike is having dual exhaust.

    crf450.jpg

The Yamaha lineup has changed as well. I don't want a WR, at all. I have no plans of plating it or riding it on the street. If I have to go on pavement for a short distance, and get caught...have fun catching me:eek2:. No need for lights or the extra weight. However I do like the wide ratio transmission. The YZ450FX is a great option: WR trans, Smart phone app, electric start, can upgrade to a factory electric fan for 56.00, good suspension in its category, pretty good value at 8500.00 Yeah, the kick stand would fall off. Handling is not as good as competitors. That's a big fail for me.

    yamahafx.jpg

Which leads me to the last bike in my selection....the KTM's, specifically the 450XCF. These are pretty sweet bikes, but at 10,299.00, I have to wonder if it's almost 2000.00 better. If adding up the components that differ on bike manufactures, I would guess it would be close. Sexy AF! Six speed gearbox...brembo brakes, and the list just keeps going.

    ktm450.jpg

Whichever way I do go, no mods. The right bike will be purchased, and price will not be the deciding factor. If I need to upgrade clutches, brakes, chains and sprockets, that shit adds up quick. I'm leaning hard towards the KTM.

I think you will be happy with either of those. I had planned on doing some research too as I am in similar boots. Unfortunately I haven't had the time to start the process yet.

I know you said no mods, but have you ever heard of a rekluse clutch?

I tried one once, the one that lets you slip the clutch is the best one. I could see myself using one.

After a couple years off the dirt bike, I got back into it again. I went with a 2007 WR25F. Light, nimble, good power for everything, and it won't hammer you on tight single track like a big motor will. Now if I could afford it, I would have bought a Husky 250 or 300.

Normally I would agree with this statement, however, the 2018 YZ250FX is 249lbs, WR250 258lbs, my last racer (wife's) was a 2002 YZ250F and had a lot of lighter parts on it was 213lbs.

The KTM 450 is 223lbs. I'll take the extra motor and less weight.

    2007 KTM450XC--242lbs
    2007 WR250F-----233lbs

The hit is not as abrupt on the 250, hence the reason I went with it. I can ride it all day compared to the others on their 450s. :bikewhoops:

Is that because the guys on the 450's are waiting for you to catch up?:D

All jokes aside, we need to move into the decade of bikes that this thread was started about. So in 2018, these are the numbers:

    2018 YZ250FX 249lbs wet
    2019 YZ450FX 262lbs wet
    2018 WR250 258lbs wet
    2018 WR450 271lbs:eek2: wet
    2018 KTM 450 224lbs dry (252 wet)

The hard part for me to step down to a 250cc is past experiences and not really being able to test a WR, KTM or any other brand before dropping 8000.00, let alone 10000.00+. I know what a modified 450 feels like and never had a lot of issues with them. A Rekluse Clutch really helps any bike out, but especially on the bigger bore bikes.

We should also be on the same page of riding, I don't do all day this:

This is exactly where I ride 50%+ of the time, and ride like these guys.

I have actually been considering a KTM 500 EXC-F. Hell, I could just ride it out to the area instead of using a diesel truck to haul a bike.

    270lbs wet.

I'm going to see if there are bike rentals in the area, and actually try out your suggestion. I don't want to dismiss what you said, I could be blown away.

I usually follow the old saying "It's easier to ride a slow bike fast, then ride a fast bike slow..."

I found one to rent. Not bad for 140 per day. I think this is totally worth it to see if I'm missing out or what not.

Yeah, it's a fat girl Mike. If I'm going that heavy, might as well go with a KTM 500

I don't think so either, but to be honest, it's a 140 bucks. I don't want to dismiss his suggestion for my own ego. Might be a hoot.

Rent is due on the 1st.
