    Hey fellahs!

For those of you who hate chrome and are looking for an affordable and relatively easy color match option for your bumpers, check this out. I wanted to share my experience and what I ultimately ended up doing.

Phase 1: I Plasti-Dipped both the front and rear bumpers. I did a very heavy coat. I used nearly a can for each corner, about 5 or 6 coats. I wanted it thick (no jokes please...). I didn't mind the black bumper look, but I wanted color match bumpers somehow... I looked at vinyl wraps, aftermarket pre-painted replacement options and rattle cans...

    1.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg

    Phase 2:
I tried Dupli Color... If you have a Silver Sky Metallic (code 1D6) don't waste your time. Despite what the can says, it's NOT an exact match... In my experience, it was far too tan-ish and too light. NOT an exact match…
    1.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg 4.jpg

A few important notes here. I sprayed right over the Plasti Dip. I figured its worth a shot and I was curious as to how the spray paint would cure, dry and hold up over the dip. This was basically experimental. I figured worst case, I peal it off and spray it with Plasti Dip and go back to the black look. I rocked this look for about 6 weeks with no issues. Through the car wash, rain storms, hot beating sun in the parking lot, and humidity - zero issues. I did not experience any pealing or cracking. I thought it’s worth sharing! Turns out Plasti Dip makes a decent primer! The finished look is “orange pealy” but I don’t give a shit, its not chrome and looks good’nuff.

Phase 3: The not-so-color-match look was pissing me off. Knowing that I could paint right over the dip, I went back to looking for rattle can option and ended up settling for the 1D6 Silver Sky Metallic spray cans from Automotive Touchup. A tad pricey but in the grand scheme, super affordable. I ordered two cans, one for the front and once for the ass and sprayed directly over the Dupli Color. This was WAY better and I’d say like a 98% match. It seems damn spot on in almost all light/angles. This coat also removed a little bit of the orange peal look and smoothed out. I did not add a clear coat, and I doubt I will.

    Here is the final look:

    1.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg 4.jpg 5.jpg 6.jpg 7.jpg 8.jpg 9.jpg

So yeah, that’s what I did. I’m super pleased with the results. Thought I would share my experience for all you chrome-haters out there.

    Cheers!

Annnnnd if anyone is looking to get rid of some black headlights off a Pro, let me know :) That is the last element I'm looking for to complete the look.

Bumpers look good. Thanks for sharing the process with us. Makes me want to try something similar.

Side note: your yard looks like something I'd have to pay $15 for parking just to visit! That is lush!

Appreciate that! We have had a lot of rain here in Maine this summah. Plenty of burn holes from the damn dogs pissing on the grass though with that antifreeze urine.... An aerial view looks like swiss cheese....

Looks pretty good. I did the black plastidip on mine. I like the black and silver combination. But it's been a couple years and I have some wear spots in the front. Thought about changing it to body color but the bumper end parts are too damn expensive. So this could be a good option. Did you get the "ready to spray pint can"?

Yessir. Got two cans which was just enough. It came to $53.06 with shipping to my door.

Ah, ok, I see the aerosol can. $19.95. So you sprayed it directly over the plastidip that you already had on there? Wonder how this would look sprayed directly over the chrome. Guess then you couldn't remove it like you could if you had the plastidip base. Humm..

Yea Automotive touchup is legit. Just make sure you get the 2k clear they offer, not the other one.

Exactly. Well, technically I sprayed it over the dupli color, which was sprayed over the plasti dip. From what I have experienced so far, the plasit dip has been a great "primer" as long as you spray it on think over the chrome.

IMO, the color match is almost dead-nuts. Seems to be a much better quality paint as well.

He was talking about the clear coat that you can buy from them. They have 2 versions. A regular high gloss clear and the 2K Urethane clear (Requires mask).

Did you just mask them off to spray or pull them off? I’ve been thinking about doing this for a while but wasn’t sure how well it would work.

For the fronts, I pulled the grill, and the corner trim pieces between the headlights and bumper, and then just masked off everything else.

For the rears, I pulled the plastic step pieces on the top of the bumper and then masked off everything else.

You can cover a lot of ground with trash bags, news papers and painters tape!

Good luck! Let us know how it comes out!

Just figured I'd throw it out there that I had a less than stellar outcome with this. I just painted my eBay TRD Pro grill surround using the Automotive Touchup. I think the color is relatively close to factory, but my painting skills apparently leave a lot to be desired. I've painted whole vehicles and motorcycles before with great outcomes. Metal, plastic, etc, but I had a really hard time with this job bc of the cans. The AT rattle cans spit gobs of paint which ruined the job :frusty:. Wet sanded and reapplied and somewhat salvaged it, but it doesn't look great to me in all light. I used the clear coat too which gave a bit of a light texture (almost orange peelish). In hindsight, I wish I'd just spent the money and taken it to a body shop or bought a knot off color-matched surround from Ebay. Oh well, YMMV. $80 in paint and a whole saturday wasted.

Have a 08 that jacked up big time, then the wife smashes it up last December. Just got it finished today, lol. Been kinda busy. Bought like 3 cans of base and 3 cans of clear and a bunch of ebay parts, lol. Truck hasn't looked this good in years. My brother in law went to the wreck, said that aluminum Ford the wife smashed was tore up way worse than the Tundra. All we carry is liability so fixed by me on my dime. Came out a lot better than I expected, this paint is awesome. Like someone else mentioned shake the can way more than usual for the metalic and it will spray out nice.
