Just a simple question,WTF is your problem exactly?

I am just trying to understand the use period.
Seems sort of like the Nextel used to be except with a touchscreen.

All parties need to have the same app I imagine and I also wonder if they have it for iphone as well and Android.

But let me just say I am not asking you OK.

You certainly seem to have a problem.

Like I said a simple question, trying to understand how the app works exactly nothing more, nothing less.

We have Ham platforms that link through the Internet too and I wonder if this might work in a similar way.

So is there a directory of those also online with this thing that you can talk to?

This is what I thought I was asking, clearly you did not understand this and do not want to.

My temporary setup I use for going to races in Baja. I made the bracket for it.

Mounted my Kenwood TK7360 race radio today. Used PCI's dash mount bezel. Happy with the results.

That is a really clean install! I didn't realize that the center console had that much depth to pull this off. Or does this radio have a "Control Head" that separates from the main body?

Thanks! It's not one of those radios with a remote mountable head. The head unit and radio are all one unit. I needed about a 1/4" more depth to make it work so I ordered a sheet of 1/4" thick textured ABS off of Amazon and cut it to match that area. It's a tight fit for sure, but it fits. I had to clearance some of the tundra console plastic with a Dremel to make it work. But it wasn't too bad. And its rock solid now. Doesn't budge. Here's the stuff I used.

You're lucky. Vermont is notorious for bad cell coverage once you get out of the cities. Turn left out of my driveway and there isn't a signal for over six miles until you get over the Appalachian Gap to the ski areas.

Well I ventured into DMR, I got a cheap Chinese TYT radio and a hotspot. Still building a code plug but punched in some talkgroups to talk to a friend out in Idaho via the hotspot and a DMR repeater in Warrenton.

Anyone got their ham radios in the pocket on the passenger side? Trying to come up with a idea to make it flush flat almost similar between a mix of @Baja Mike and @ckolben . Since that pocket is their, I had only used it to lose my small olight flash light. . .

This thread is fabulous! I just picked up an ICOM IC-V86 handheld for shits and giggles and am now taking a course for certification in my city. Apparently it's a popular course as we have students from other parts of Canada. Pretty straight forward stuff and you can cram for the test but I think learning the whole thing is better. I haven't been schooled in 45 years so we shall see.
Yes, HAM radio is full of old guys, but using APRS for texts etc. in an area where there is no cell service for free is pretty cool I think.

Anyone using a stubby fat little antenna? I saw one on a Taco the other day. Are they any good?

Looks like a dummy load, and is probably a significant compromise without looking at the dBi gain on each band.

It's possible but not recommended for anything more than just casual use. I use it 3 times a year. It's a bit of a reach for the driver and is mainly meant for the passenger to use it.

Quick question for anybody that mounted their radio to the dash. How did your run the antenna and power wires through the dash and under the hood? I mounted my radio to my expedition essentials plate and I am contemplating drilling a hole somewhere not super visible and using a rubber grommet to finish the hole up a bit.

If you pull the head unit you’ll be able to go down the center speaker cover towards the glove box and out the firewall by the passenger footwell.

Pulled the radio out of my 03 Tacoma and put it in my 08 DC Tundra.... treated myself to new coax. The column shifter limited my pre-made dash mount options (None of the four Proclip options worked with my truck setup).
Went DIY and took the beauty cover off my ash tray and mounted the radio mount to the front of the ash tray. (FTM-400)
    ash_tray_mount_ham.jpg

The location is an easy reach and doesn't block any controls. The ash tray is still useable.
    ham_mounted.jpg

The main section of the FTM-400 is mounted to an ABS sheet on the back wall of the double cab (bottom left corner).
    Tundra_electronics_board.jpg

    Diamond 2m/70cm NR-73BNMO
    antenna_mounted.jpg

"L" NMO mount at the rear driver's side of my bed. I inverted the L bracket to lower the antenna a bit so the antenna would not bend excessively when coming through the garage entry way.
    antenna_L_bracket.jpg

Still waiting for the RJ45 coupler that is mounted to a pop-out dash blank to come so I can have a clean way to plug in the FTM-400 microphone.

I just installed the compactenna today. My SWR on 2M was 1.33, but 2.35 on 70cm. I moved the antenna mount a bit and was looking at 1.28 and 2.04. I still wasn’t happy so switched out for my cheapie tram 1181 and was looking at 1.12 and 1.98. I’d probably run the tram 24/7 but at 18” it’s a little too tall sitting on my roof. Not sure if the compactenna is worth 4x the price of other antennas. Probably won’t get it much lower with all the junk I have sitting on my roof rack

What are you all looking at for SWRs?
