Show me your truck camping setup!

Before the slider, did some tent and car camping, then camper trailer, then used a topper on the Tundra.
The slider is very tight, but really convenient.

 

Looking good! How does the topper compare to a trailer? I realize it depends on the trailer, but what are the top trade offs you've noticed?

And your picture makes me miss ski season. We had season passes for a few years, but moved back to the South last year. We're settling for random 65 degree perfect days in the middle of January, but my son and I still miss pow days.

As you may know, camping is all about compromise.
The camper trailer was small as well, but way more comfy when ww were in it.
We could do three peeps, four cozy without tripping over each other and still maintain use of sink, MW and stovetop.








The slide in is tight for two (my son and I), when camping for skiing, once inside is like a slide block puzzle.
Once we setup the bed, the stove top and 1 third of the camper is done. We do setup our clean waste under the bed for emergencies
When solo, it is perfect.
We have yet to do a spring summer camping trip on the FWC, that should work out better since we can hang outside.

Overall, the FWC is way more convenient, no trailer, easy to park in town, and no need to un-hitch once back home.
Hoping to get some more camping/ski time this winter. Then we plan on doing some astrophotography in death valley. should be fun.
Next year I will be semi retired, hope to do way more.
Eventually would like to upgrade to a flatbed FWC, they have a bit more room.

I've finally built out a bit more of my truck bed camping setup. Tested it this weekend with a 2 night winter camp. (for now I'm just using a small electric heater & an electric camping site). Still needs some improvements but I'm liking the basic functionality!
I have a low "lounge" area with an angled back & plenty of padding. My head height is not compromised. Then when it's bedtime, I can raise this up & the entire back end becomes a bed.
I was lacking counter space so I have a 3 drawer small slide out with a hinged top that flips forward for more countertop space.

 

Slide out looks awesome. How rigid is the butcher block component, for cutting/prep? Enough that a fold-out telescoping support leg is unnecessary?

 

It's pretty solid. I don't put a ton of weight on it but it has full extension drawer slides with plenty of weight rating. I don't anticipate needing a leg under it. I only slide it out enough to get the stove past the tailgate.
I built in some cool extra storage underneath also.
Some tweaking is still necessary. Like a flexible hose for the grill. When I have the rigid hose, I can't flip the cutting board open anymore.

 

That's awesome. I think I remember when this was going in earlier, and I commented on it then too. Great job with this. You and @oscardog86 are doing some really cool stuff.

 

I’ve built my truck out for camping, though just for my single self. ARE shell, custom built wooden box with three drawers, some astroturf, and a sleeping bag/pad is all I feel you need for overnight camping unless you have a woman in your life… or children. And FYI I promise it’s more organized when I’m actually camping.



Used an even more “minimal” setup which didn’t have the drawers, just boxes inside the wooden box itself on my first big trip - 4 weeks alone with the truck camping in 8 states. My latest add-on was a Little Buddy Heater to keep me warm since I don’t have an actual buddy to do that

 

Ive tried all the various set ups, for me, a big, tall tent with full size ceilings and room for a queen size blow up mattress that sits up off the ground on a frame is the only way to go. I used to be more hardcore, and sleep on the ground or on a backpacking mattress etc, but thats for the young kids. I cant quite get myself to throw away all hope and buy a camp trailer, so for me its a big tent. Plus these Tundras wont haul a toy hauler and I need my quads for the kids to play on....

 

Did you tell us your camping setup
Is a tall tent with a queen sized mattress on a frame off the ground… then post a bunch of pics that don’t show any of this? Also, did you mean to post pics of your 1st gen truck?


I use a Gazelle tent that is easily transported in the bed of my 1st gen access cab. It’s tall, may be a bit like your setup.

I feel it's better this way. Camping setups are pretty adaptable to every generation.

 

Bought a 5x10 cargo trailer with an extended tongue, windows, & roof vent. Then proceeded to do the following
I removed all the paneling & installed insulation

 

Next I carpeted the interior walls and ceiling. Made a bed platform and front storage. Test fit of the ATV.

 

Then I worked on the outside, welded expanded metal on the tongue for the battery & propane. Mocked up the wheels and disco lights

 

Mounted the wheels, had to use spacers. Mounted bigger fenders and welded up some steps.

 

I'm too cheap to by crossbars, so I made a couple for the roof rack and awning. I made this 2 years ago when I had a 2020 Tacoma, but it matches the color of my 03 Tundra great, just have to get some Taco wheels for my tundra

I have a woman and children, but still prefer to hang out in wilderness by myself, just to stay sane

Do you get any moisture accumulation with this heater? Also any problems starting it in cold temps? Some days I have problems starting even gasoline-powered Coleman stove, gas rejects to evaporate. Propane is impossible on such days.

Be careful with propane heater in closed spaces. I've said once before somewhere else, but get a carbon monoxide detector. A friend of a friend died from it with a mr. buddy in his tent.

 

Look into Chinese diesel heaters, I’ve got one and we love it
