Really? I thought they were in CO. When I used to drive to work, there was a company that produced something similar near my work. I saw a new one on the road about once a week.

I am sure your wife would agree with that...

Yep I bet that is the one I used to work by. It was pretty cool to get to see them.

On the topic of the thread.
I really want to turn my 04 DC into a mild adventure rig. I love the topper idea w/ build in storage, bed & awning. But I also love my truck without a topper.

I think my ideal setup would be some type of PVC rack that can come apart for easy storage with a big bug net that could cover the bed for sleeping. I'd have to rig up some type of rain fly or awning to cover in case of rain.

Are there any threads, posts etc. that are even remotely like this?

I can pull my shell off in about 10 minutes. I would guess I can pull my shell off faster than most soft topper dudes.

Everything made out of PVC is destined to be trash. It is to brittle for most tasks, other than moving water. Wood or metal is going to hold up to life much better than plastic.

PVC sounds like it wouldn't hold up when driving, and if it did it would be very noisy I would imagine. Unless the PVC structure is meant to be put together and on the truck when you're at the destination.

That was my idea. To have something simple to setup that I can throw a bug net over. It gets hot & muggy here in MN. I would prefer as much air flow as possible.

Magnets attached to tubes a size bigger than the PVC pipe. Stick the magnets on the bedsides, doors, tailgate. Base/ bottom of PVC slips into the tubes and you can build your structure then throw a net over it.

nope, I didn't take it that way. Just doing the 2021 thing & responding picture for picture :)

Realistically I'm a ways off from building my camper setup. I want to explore both ends of the spectrum. Light & flexible with a regular bed setup, or full topper w/ storage build.

    Cool beans.

Just a bit more history on me. I have had to replace 2 soft tops on a vehicle that is garage kept. They were good quality name brand soft tops. I have also had to replace other nylon or poly waterproof fabrics. It all fails.

I have also made several things out of PCV. They all crack, from stress and or UV exposure. The only one that has stood up is my walnut cannon. That things is 20 years old now.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't thinking of keeping the setup on permanently. My idea is to have rollout storage below my tonneau. I like the idea of using the camping poles as noted earlier, X'ed across the bed with a bug net over that. I'm picturing a diy truck tent instead of a full topper / more permanent setup. So none of this would get any more wear & tear than a typical tent.

I'm also considering the full topper setup. Realistically I'm going to dream about it for the rest of the year. Get a few more camping trips under my belt with my son. Finish up house projects and that will give me a better idea of how much adventuring I get to do next year. That will be the determining factor...

I clear the rocks, and have a double stuffed sleeping bag to lay on the floor. And the chair leaned against the tree folds out into a cot if the weathers nice.

i wish i had pics. I welded some sq tubing to plates that i parked on, that held my hammock on the beach. But i have a tiny ultralight hiking hammock.

best setup ever: ‘88 s10 blazer with the back seats folded down, and the drivers seat leaned all the way forward gave enough incline, especially parked nose down, and left enough room i didnt have to spoon my dog.
