I carry a military fold up on my truck for the beach. The only way you need a full size on the beach is if you don’t know when to stop hitting the gas

Fact is his Jeep trail hawk sucked in soft deep sand. He relied too much on the super duper electronic 4WD system. So he got stuck. Fact is the military tool sucked and the normal shovel was a thousand times easier to use. Park Ranger said they’re no good for that application and he was right.

Agreed. I pull out at least one ‘intelligent 4WD’ a year from it not locking till it’s to late

If you want to spend a lot of money and have a super baller shovel, the dmos collective delta shovel is the bees knees. If not, grab a regular ole d handle or long handle shovel from your favorite hardware/tool store and rock on

Cheap and seems durable for the few times I've used it. I think I impulse bought it from hombre Depot. I also won't cry when it gets rusty or whatever.

What are y’all’s thoughts on a wood handle shovel and longevity being stored mounted to the truck out in the elements?

They'll last a long time outdoors. I have one I always keep outside in the elements [for scooping dog poop out of the dog pen]. I don't think you'll notice anything other than discoloration on the handle. After 10 years, it would probably weaken it a little for hard prying, but then, a new one will break if you use it like a pry bar.;)

Just a shovel from HD or your favorite hardware store. I got I think a 24" D handle "digging shovel" that works great. Think it was something like 24 bucks and I secured it to my rails with those metal cube things from Amazon that slide into the rail and the rubber clamp things. Neat and tidy. Since I have a cap, it stays dry so I don't worry about rust or the wood handle rotting. Don't over think it. It's a shovel. Just get the right type for the conditions you expect (flat for snow on asphalt, digging for dirt or deep sand...). Those little folding 'military ones' are only good for dribbling a little sand on a camping fire to put it out. Don't recommend for use in recovery; get a real shovel. We have a truck, truck has a bed with lots of space for a real shovel, don't wimp out on those janky little ones.

The money some people waste on a shovel is amusing. But, it is their money and if they want to fork out extra dough to look cool then so be it. I got one at Sears only because it was lifetime warranty and the shorter ones at tractor supply with lifetime warranty were sold out.

How rigid is that one? I thought I was upgrading my yard shovel by getting an Ames and I hate it. It flexes too easily for my taste. I actually may mount it in my truck one day because I don't like it for digging in the yard. I don't think it's going to break but I don't like the blade flexing when I jump on it. My hd special actually feels pretty good in comparison.

This one just stays in my truck so I haven't used it that much. Just dipping around tires, some general ranch work or digging holes for a campfire I haven't seen any problems or too much flex with it yet and I have had this one about a year.

I'm just here to add to the 2 pages about a shovel in hopes that it makes it to 3+.

Don't knock it too much. I just got told that some aussies think we are 25 years behind the times on our trailer hitching technology. I guess the roll n lock is obsolete because it doesn't have enough springs or failure points and it doesn't have the Australian government mandated drift quality handbrake. So if someone can devote their life to that noble venture then we can easily devote 20 pages to moving small amounts of dirt by hand and another 20 or so to moving small amounts of snow.

I'm not sure that's the issue with the gifted minds of these Australian enginerds. As for government mandated handbrakes on trailers... Yeah there could be a bath salt or tide pod connection.

Crazy Beaver Shovel and Tires = recipe for disaster I'm thinkin'. I have 3 digging tools in my truck:
Short "D" handle shovel for tight quarters, like under the truck: good under truck, but hard on the back to use for any length of time.
Long handled (wood) Firefighter's Shovel for big jobs; can use it all day if needed, sharpened to cut through roots.
Pulaski, combination axe/hoe, for chopping and digging; designed for fire fighting, nothing better.
Add a water bucket, and you're good for the woods during dry fire season, and keep the toy shovels in the kids sandbox where they belong.
