Seems that Ford has a general problem around components they get from 3rd parties/vendors and performing the QA/QC needed for a proper validation before slapping them into their trucks.

They also tend to have more tech and gizmo's in their trucks or lead other manufacturers in implementing new tech, which in turn causes them to need more components from 3rd parties/vendors that compound the issue.

At least that's what it looks like from the outside looking in.

    That is a loaded question.

I would say 10-14k constantly a diesel is a good idea.

Now depending on geographic location, there's a big difference towing 12k lbs across Nebraska vs Colorado (elevation and passes).

I was thinking about Colorado when I took a stab at 8K. The tunnel approaches where you need to pass a truck. 100° days, etc. I'm always worse case conservative when towing.

I wouldn't do the trade. I only want a diesel if I put mile one on it and know where it's been at night.
Easy to buy a used gasser by comparison.

If you’re gonna go HD, GM is all I would consider. We have one at work and I just love listening to the guys warming it up in the morning, That Duramax just purrs and is so powerful. Boss has a Denali 3/4 ton Duramax as well and it’s an absolute beast and rides real nice. All that said, they are either too rich for my blood or pocketbook, or they are real working trucks. They don’t fit in with my needs as a Swiss Army knife vehicle, which the Tundra does very well for me. But damn if I don’t secretly wish I had one once in awhile……..

Another guy at work has a Dodge 1 ton and he says every time it breaks it’s a $2000 or more ordeal.

For me it would depend on frequency of towing, load weight, and towing distance. I would have to be towing above 8,000lbs on a weekly basis to justify a diesel. Going camping once a month, that's gasser territory depending on what you're towing.

Towing > 10k more than 3-4x week for 100mi per trip? Diesel. Change any of these variables and gas is the move.

given your tow/trailer setup, you don’t need a ¾ ton much less a diesel.
    Keep and enjoy your tundra.

I would drive your gmc in the Alaska snow and salt roads. And save the tundra for when it’s nice out so you can impress the babes.

Born and raised on GM untill then 3rd gen came along and I bailed on GM.
My last GM blew up,the DOD experience sucked 9,500 for a factory replacement then shortly after that my tranny failed.Am I allowed to say "Tranny"? Anyhow I disagree with the pay out of pocket vs warranty.
$2060 for a 10yr/125k vs an 8 yr vehicle (which I've owned since it rolled off the line) so with 108K on it & drive train goes south...Total cost 14+k...

Not trying to :deadhorse: but I disagree.

    OP stay with your Tundra.

    * Note DOD = Displacement on Demand (GM)

    * MDS = Multiple Displacement System (dodge)

Nice shack you have there for sure man!
Yeah 100% I hear ya, I too can turn a wrench but engine or tranny is out of my league but everything eles not a problem (man If I had a lift like yours)....

But that 10yr. 125K mileage warranty on everything else to me is pretty sexy I don't want to bring my truck to the Stealership for anything period (I don’t trust, like the potential Shanagans) but I anything that fails I'm covered.

Nice garage and I like the toys you have kicking around on the floor.
    All the best Brother.

    MAP sensor spacer 80
    Allison thermal bypass. 80

    Lots of stuff!
TFL did a fuel economy test on a new GMC HD and it did surprisingly well. I think they got 18.1 mpg of mixed city and highway on a planned route. My 22 Tundra runs about 12 mpg but that is city driving and with heavy tires. I don't really look at the mileage since it is a secondary vehicle and the EV does the most miles for our work.

@Kerktam We are looking at swapping for a '23 3500 HD for many reasons.

I will have to look at the recommendations from @ColoradoTJ as well!

I used Techron fuel injection cleaner (the kind you pour into the tank), and my Tundra's MPG improved afterward. Those direct-injection engines must have their injector ports cleaned every 10-15K miles.

It may be that we are getting some gummed up injectors from lack of use. our Tundra has only 4,600 miles on it and has only had premium gas so no ethanol blend. I think the tires are what's impacting my results and the lack of highway miles.

In addition to weight I would throw in trailer physical dimensions and shape.

Yanking around a barn shaped 8000lb camper with a bunch of frontal area at 70MPH is a complete suck-fest compared to a flatbed trailer with construction materials that weighs the same. That extra air being displaced increases power demands considerably.

    Nice looking rig OP.

Now you can take on larger jobs, haul more tools/gear/materials to job sites and potentially expand your business by improving your logistics capabilities.

I hope it serves you well.

Oh for sure. Some of the hardest pulling I have had was in ND/SD in high winds with a camper.

Wind resistance affects my job too. For example empty open top hopper cars in a headwind can be a real struggle with throttle limitations and locomotives being isolated for fuel conservation. Meanwhile a heavier train of covered hoppers with less surfaces for wind to act on will be faster at equal throttle and power online.
