Back in August, I resigned from my old job of being a department manager due to kinda being burnt out from doing it for 20 years and the shove was that another manager was just terrible and demeaned and condescended a lot what I did. I was going on vacation and he sends me a message saying "leave the lies and the bullshit at home and come back and show me what kind of man you are". Needless to say that was it.

So now, it's been nearly a year since I left, I've found a new job, but it's not something I see myself doing long term. So I've been putting my resume out there. Well I have an interview with a company along the same lines of what I was doing, just a different industry.

Now 8 months later. the manager that had the choice words for me, sends me a message asking if I would be interested in coming back.

From my conversations with other people in the company, business and customer service has gone to sh!t. I agreed to have a conversation with them to hear them out, but should I just cut my loses? To me, it would be like going back with an Ex.

I personally would not go back if the person in question is still there, chances are they may say something because they need your help and am agreeing to anything and everything you say/demand, but the problem is the person in question is still there, possible same rank/title/same issue, just not upfront showcasing it.
I don't have a solid answer for you, but I would never go back to the same company, no matter how/why I left in the first place, be it pay/position/future/shit. Getting something similar in a same/different industry would be my go-to, but it's up to you to make the final call. Hear them out, but remind yourself why you left in the first place and then ask yourself if can tolerate the same shit twice.

Only go back if you're THAT guys manager, because clearly he's bad management material.

I say this as a manager myself. By your description, this is an asshole that wants to be a "boss." Bosses are the worst. Leadership through service is pretty much how any team is driven to success. If he's shoving you around verbally, he'll never be good to work alongside, or for. He needs more human resource training and education. However, if you drive productivity and customer service with a better attitude that fosters an empathetic and understanding non-hostile work environment, you're clearly the better pick for the job.

If it were me? I'd forward his request that you return to work to HIS manager, and ask for this guys job, as he clearly cannot do it, and you turned out the be the linchpin in this situation.

My choice words for the manager who's asked you to come back would be.....

    Fuck you, pay me.

Move on. Life's too short working for assholes.

    ...my less than 2¢ advice.

This would be a total Jedi move and a great idea.

Make sure you have a good resume, 30/60/90 day plan with a cover letter.

Based on the information provided, it seems like the decision to go back to the old job ultimately depends on the individual's personal priorities and values.

On one hand, returning to the old job may provide a sense of familiarity and comfort, as well as a chance to potentially improve the current state of the business and customer service. It may also provide a stable source of income and job security.

On the other hand, going back to a toxic work environment with a manager who has previously exhibited disrespectful behavior could potentially lead to further stress and negative experiences. Additionally, it may hinder the individual's ability to explore new career opportunities and personal growth.

Before making a decision, it may be helpful for the individual to reflect on their personal goals and values, and weigh the pros and cons of each option. They may also want to consider having an open and honest conversation with the previous manager about their concerns and expectations for the job if they were to return.

Shit, i'd have a conversation with him. Not gonna cost you anything.

You are in a good position, dont read into the BS he's gonna be laying on you since you know what its really going to be like....and know your worth, have a # ready and then tell him a higher number than that is what it will take to come back.

AI's specialty is somehow VERY similar to middle management. Talk a lot, take up a bunch of time, nothing actually done.

Money talks. If the money makes you not care about the asshole you have to work with, go for it. Not sure if going back is moving your career along or not though. Like ChatGPT said, reflect on your personal goals and values

I like this except for being this douchebag's manager. Agree with reaching out to his manager with the offer to come back if the current douchebag is removed as a condition.

Even if the other guy isn't necessarily fired, becoming HIS manager ensures you can set goals and milestones for improvements for his professional behaviors. And if that happens to include "get better or get out" then, well...

True, there is a good deal of merit to your approach. And perhaps the dude has learned some lessons and would be fine. I just personally wouldn't want to deal with the person who pushed me to the point of leaving the first time.

I would be hesitant to go back. I would imagine that same individual will put even MORE pressure then prior due to the idea of "bringing you back". He probably will take the route of you owe him something for him doing you a "Favor" to come back. Toxic environments do not change unless the toxicity is removed.

I can't think of a single previous job I would ever consider going back to. I swear I developed Stockholm syndrome while trying to justify hanging on to some of the jobs I kept as long as I did.

I'd quit working 100% forever starting tomorrow if I found some wealth to support me until the end.

I think having a conversation with them would be good practice for future interviews but given why you left and how things have gotten worse since, I wouldn't go back.

This is my idea too. I have talked with the manager above him, just not in great detail yet. We have both said that it must have taken a lot for him to reach out to me, or as I said, things must really be bad. I'd be afraid of this very situation of I got you your job back.
