When you crank up and put it in drive, the ABS system does a self-check that causes a thump you can hear and feel. It does it when you get up to about 5mph.

That’s what this forum is for. Lots of folks here who know a lot more than I do about these trucks. Remember, the only stupid questions are the ones you don’t ask.

The clunk you feel is the abs self check. It will do it every time you first start the truck and proceed in drive the first time. It’s normal.

My truck almost feels like it slips or shifts strange taking a right turn out of the neighborhood. Not sure what causes this but I've had other vehicles act similar. From a stop taking a sharp turn

Not the ABS Clunk. It feels like the convertor unlocks but it only does it once when cold and turning. Mine is a 17 CM with 42,000 I wondered if the level might be a little low and the fluid was cold. I do let off the gas when turning 90 degrees like most old men

Ive noticed the same on my 17 DC. Seems like when its sat for a few days at work it searches for the right gear foa a few minutes. Then all good

I was about to start a message about this. Every day leaving work I take a sharp right turn and it feels as though the transmission slips, then does not do it again. First couple of times I was not sure what was going on, so I started paying more attention. Glad I am not the only one with the issue. 2020 Crewmax by the way.

If this many of us with new trucks are experiencing the same thing it HAS to be what @tttrdpro references in #2

This is easy to figure out folks. Just go somewhere where you can pull straight out for a couple of hundred feet. A large parking lot for instance. Turn the ignition off. Restart the truck and pull straight forward. If what you have been experiencing happens when you get to about 5 mph or so, it’s the ABS self-check. If not, take your truck to the dealership and tell them to fix it.

Usually the trucks come set up where the automatic door locks mask that sound by locking the doors at the same time. On my truck that's at more like 12mph. I'm wondering if the newer trucks do it at a lower speed now (the ABS, not the locks).

An update today. I left my work parking lot and went straight further and made sure to go over 10 mph. When I made the right turn where it has felt like the transmission is slipping, it operated more normally... like I said, it only does it leaving work making that quick right turn, so by going straight for a bit first, it did not do it...

Ive noticed mine doing the same thing...
Even after a long 24 mile ride home from work, when I pull into and up my driveway it feels like its stuck in 2nd gear and cant decide to drop to 1st or stay in 2nd.

I also notice it seems to take longer than expected to drop into gear after pulling into "D".

It's done this from the day it came home and is unrelated to the lift/tires.

I wonder if trans fluid is low maybe ???

    Just adding my $.02. 2017 CM 1794 44k miles.

I've never experienced any weird shifting/clunking under 10mph.

However, when the truck is driven at a constant speed in overdrive/high gear for at least a few minutes, upon decelerating to around 30-40mph and then applying throttle (either delicately or abruptly), the transmission will give a bit of a clunk. Always just assumed that's how these trucks are.

I would assume this is too fast for it to be ABS.

The ABS self-check is one thing, I hear it every morning, same place, same time.

I also get the occasional clunky, indecisive transmission, usually when cold or driving uneven/low speeds like through a parking lot, especially first thing in the morning and when I go to leave work after its been sitting for 8 hours. I don't think this is related to the ABS check. I think the reality is that its just an old design 6 speed automatic that is never going to be as smooth as the new 10 speeds in the Fords (which masks a lot of that stuff). I don't think its an indicator of something wrong with the transmission, just that its not that refined or smooth compared to newer technology. Just watch your RPMs when its doing something weird. If you get spikes or prolonged bogging then you may have something slipping. The occasional indecisive shift or awkwardness for a brief moment is just a trait of the technology we're dealing with. Whenever the next Gen Tundra is finally released I'm pretty certain Toyota will bring a new engine and transmission to the fight.... probably with turbo(s) and 8+ speeds.

Transmission is still cold during the first 10mph, assuming you turn on the truck and take off right away. The ECU will surge transmission fluid pressure to preserve the transmission from any damage therefore not shifting when it should, so it will take just a little longer than expected, which is normal. My 07 does this when its cold and I just take off, usually doesn't do it if I let it idle and warm up a little bit. Hope this helps answer your question.

Just an update on my truck. I had it at the dealer for the turn signal recall, ask them to check out the transmission shifting. When I explained that I drive through my parking lot pretty slow, but not stopping, their belief is that the transmission is not sure if it wants to be in first or second gear and that is why it feels like it is slipping. Supposedly, the service guy that told me that has a tundra, his does it too.

I noticed this on my 2021 Limited. 99% of the time seamless first to second shifts but when going slow usually when transmission is cold, or making right turns from light the transmission will sometimes have a harsher 1st to 2nd shift. I think OnespeedTRD nailed it. Just characteristics. I know 99% of my buddies would never notice it.

My truck has always done the weird low speed turn surge thing, drives me nuts but I've learned to baby the gas on those turns to control it.

I also get the squeaky brake pedal, squeaky shifter, clunky/creaky bed...all of it!
