I only have the next two weekends free until April 21st. So I am probably out on this then. One of those will be a shake down run if I ever get my truck done. lol

I'm down for those dates - I think it's Easter, but we can have an Easter egg hunt in the desert just fine. It'll be like finding your skid plate again. :tumbleweed:

    Some name history...

We had been camping together for a couple years (some for 3 or 4 years) and were trying to figure out how to describe what we do. @osidepunker and @spenny were driving back from a trip and chatting about it when they came up with the Speed Glampers part. That's a pretty accurate description for our particular style of high speed overlanding.

See, we don't just putz around and cruise the trails when we're out - we do enjoy that. Some of the trails we take are super technical and take time and good spotters to make it through. If we don't have to tug, winch or otherwise unfuck somebody out of a situation at least once per trip, we don't feel like we accomplished anything. Rock Gardens and tight trails are a ton of fun, but pretty much everyone does that stuff, so it's not really a distinguishing feature of our team. Speed is.

Making our way between obstacles or scenic vistas is done with purpose. The purpose of adrenaline. The purpose of excitement. The purpose of Speed. This is where the trophy truck inspired suspension setups earn their keep. Blasting along desert trails (sometimes just through the open desert) at 70 mph just doesn't work on stock setups, or even marginally enhanced suspensions. Whoop sections, unseen washouts, blown corners, jumps and blind drops are par for the course of any offroad trip. We just try to take them as fast as possible.

Going fast on the trail isn't exactly difficult. Lots of trucks do that. But most folks who drive like that spend the night in hotels or travel trailers (I'm looking at you Ford Raptor owner). We prefer to be a bit more self sufficient.

Being self sufficient means we can sleep in comfort wherever we end up. We don't have to make it back to civilization in order to have a hot shower, delicious meal or a cold beer (or 13). Pretty much everyone on the team has onboard hot running water, dual batteries, a fridge, roof top tent (or some other sleeping contraption), kitchen supplies, table and chairs, awning, coffee maker - whatever it takes to be comfortable out in the wilderness when we stop. All of this makes us Glampers - if you're unfamiliar with the term, crawl out from that rock you've been under and get with it.

Glamping is just glamorous camping. We love to be outside in nature - especially the hard to reach parts of nature where most people can't get to. Or they might go visit for an hour and then go back because they don't have all their stuff with them (left it in that trailer or back at the hotel). We always have all our stuff with us, so wherever we stop is a potential campsite. It means we have prime rib on the road. Deep fry a whole turkey? Fuck yeah. Bacon all the things? Of course! Some high quality whiskey, fresh Brussels sprouts, and ice-cream for desert? You bet (as long as Spenny is on the trip - I think he's the only one with a freezer). We're all a little bit foodie, so eating on the trail each night is always a treat.

    Uberfahrt?

Well that story is a bit simpler - we're a bunch of immature kids and think the word fart is funny. Especially if it's a super fart. We had all been doing research on recovery boards, trying to figure out what works best, is lightest, strongest, readily available, whatever. I was watching this youtube video from Europe where they were testing the bridging capability of several different styles of ladder or sand boards (I think this was before Maxtrax and Treds were out). One of the titles said something about uberfahrt and I realized I wanted to use that as a battle cry any time we met up. Turns out, it means to cross overland or journey or some shit (shart? fart?).

A little over 3 minutes into this vid is where it comes from...

    https://youtu.be/Dy_fpuMnqPY

Now with all that said about how we end up influencing each other, and stealing each other's ideas, and ridiculing each other for things like nitrogen and Icon and Lithium batteries, we ultimately just love being on the trail together. No one is ever left behind. The guys who want to go fastest go out in front and then wait. And no one complains about waiting, because it's really just an opportunity to enjoy the view and company of whoever is there with you. Need help making a climb or obstacle? We love spotting each other through the tough stuff and teaching new friends how they can do it.

I say this because I don't want people to think they won't be welcome on a trip if they can't do a thousand miles an hour, or they don't have a 5 star kitchen on board. We'll welcome you with open arms, and then tease the shit out of you until you succumb to the peer pressure and spend your life savings on this silly pursuit.

But no, really, let's go have fun!

Just have to strip the leafs and cycle the suspension so we can mock up the tubes on the bypasses correctly. Should be done next week but we will see.

Fuck yeah! We can roll out there together if it works out. Usually when we do Anza, Lisa and I head out the day before so we're there early. It just makes the drive more worthwhile.

You don’t have to hit it hard. Just get out there and hit it. Having fun is the goal. Not breaking your truck is the goal. How you do that is strictly personal.
