Good call. I’m going to use some thick zip ties too.

Maybe a good idea to put some duck tape down first to protect the paint.

Just discovered this thread on Reddit; ended up with a quick zip-tie just to 'be safe." Thanks!

As I understand it, they were also being stolen for the backup cameras.

Exactly as well as the gate itself (3rd Gen Tacomas) They didn’t have locking handles and the gate with all its parts was over $3K to replace.

Did this on my Tacoma 15 years ago. Not needed on Tundra with locking tailgate.

You can accomplish the same thing with a big zip tie ( or Tie Wrap ). It just has to keep it from lifting.

thats what I did.. two zip ties side by side.. not super theft proof but maybe a deterrent.. mainly did it after reading the OP on this thread.. the tailgate falling off while driving with it down. scared me into doing it. lol

I put a clamp on mine because I had the tailgate fall off when closing it after moving gravel and a rock got suck between the bumper and the tailgate. I have since gotten that rubber strip to keep debris from falling through the tailgate gap, but I added the clamp too.

No better way to teach those Rugrats the consequences of not holding on, when told to "Hang on tight!"
