second air pump replacement

    Is there a bypass unit to replace the secondary air pump on 2005 Tundra? Where can one be purchased?

    Before you bypass @SouthernYank51 …. Two things:

    1. Understand that NOT ALL CODES related to secondary air intake mean the pump is bad. There is a known TSB for our trucks throwing a specific SAI code (P2445) due to cold weather. Beyond that, simply having a loose vacuum line or unplugged solenoid above the passenger valve cover (outside the engine) can cause SAI codes too. Man, wouldn’t it feel stupid if your failure was SAI valve related and you paid good hard cash to bypass the whole system?

    It has more info on how to build your own SAI bypass, cheaply, AND there is info on the TSB I mention above, you’ll find it in the 2nd reply on page 1.

    Also, understand a few other things.

    Hewitt kit: There are two generations. One (Gen2) requires soldering at the ECU and may not be for everybody. You must use the block off plates, it’s not optional.

    There’s more than the Hewitt kit, but the guys at Hewitt are going to give you better support than any other kit on the market. That said, other kits may be easier or stealthier.

    Last but not least, know that the bypass kit may not play nice with other performance enhancements and/or electronics.

    Stacker chips, plug-in tuners, turbo/super chargers and other performance enhancements exist for most modern cars, yes.

    Even things like O2 simulators exist for our trucks, though they're hard to come by these days. URD made some, but they're unobtanium, you'll only find them used AFAIK. But if you want to/plan to/already are running these types of things, you never know how aftermarket add-ons will interact with each other.

    Needless to say, these SAI bypass kits work by (IIRC) tricking the computer into thinking the temperature is lower than it actually is, thereby tricking the computer into believing it doesn't need to run the SAI pump.

    To that point, that's why:
    • That TSB I mention exists, with Tundras throwing codes at low temps, and why some people continue to throw specific code(s) after installing the bypass - so it's wise to check if your code is/are the code(s) in the TSB
    • Is also why these kits won't necessarily fix that ECU-based problem - so, again, it's wise to check if your code is/are the code(s) in the TSB
    I just looked again, and it would appear my memory was working correctly, and the offending code that's a known problem for our trucks is throwing P2445 when temps are cold. But there are more codes in it.
