I'm in wait and see mode. I love my V8. I've always loved V8's. I've had V6's, and have never been impressed by them. Maybe Toyota can change my mind with the new Tundra, but I'm doubtful.

You wanna have some fun?. Load your Tundra with 91 then throw a bottle of 104+ octane booster.
Purrs like a kitten and when you stab the throttle a bit, it MOVES...

The new tundra v6 sounds like a taco trd. Funny sound coming from a half ton truck. Toyo just needs to do what they really want to do and make it electric already or stop messing with it. This easing real truck guys into electric deal is getting silly

This is exactly what people were saying when they came out with the 5.7 lol. All you have to know Tundra gets the same engine as the Land Cruiser

I am going to give this a try. Currently I can tell the difference in throttle response between 10% ethanol fuel and straight 87 octane gasoline. So if the 5.7 calibration detunes for 87 octane vs. higher octane this will be fun.

Have never experimented with E85, but it seems like the 5.7 made more horsepower on E85 per Toyota published specs. Has anyone played with E85 for the sole purpose of higher performance?

Does that really work? Around here 91 octane is almost $1 higher per gallon than 87, could cost me almost $40 extra for a full tank.

I recently starting using 93 octane (after 35k miles of running 87) and I will say it seems to run a bit smoother. It eliminate the slight pinging I used to get, and it for sure pulls better at low rpm. I notice it downshifting less with 93 once the computer adjusted.

Do it once for your soul so you can see what proper fuel does in a good ICE.

By that logic a 90s 3.0 with 25hp/cyl and 30ft-lbs/cyl would be extremely reliable. Just throwing around numbers for power density doesn't prove anything, besides how efficiently power is made with that displacement which has nothing to do with reliability.

I did save the V8. I bought the last model year of what might be the greatest half ton from the golden age of half tons. No start stop. No cylinder deactivation. No Direct injection. No BS. This V8 is a national treasure. Ford, GM, and Ram butchered their V8's with this crap to bring up their CAFE score. If this truck didn't exist I'd have to settle on a 3/4 ton gas V8. I've owned 2 turbocharged vehicles and had nothing but problems.

I hope the new TTV6 Tundra is Great Success! [but I'm stoked to have a brand new truck from the mid 2000's].

For some reason your last comment made me think of that old 'Zero Wing' game (all your base are belong to us). I imagine Toyota's chief engineer's decision making process regarding the 5.7L went something like this:

Go back further. horse and buggy!

To move on would be leaving the thread titled Save the V8. I wanted to chime in and agree that I like the V8 also. I'm sure Toyota's first TTV6 will be leaps better than other manufacturers.

My prior vehicles with issues were Jetta TDI 2.0 and Audi A4 2.0T.

Great success! was a poor attempt at a Borat impression.

There is a paradigm shift happening in the auto industry. Not just trucks, but all vehicles. Sports cars are disappearing, everything is getting hybridized, electrified, etc.

Some used vehicles are rising in value rather than falling. If there is a specific gasoline powered vehicle you've always wanted, now is the time to acquire.

That doesn't mean the bearing is anymore stressed, which is probably a better metric of reliability. For all we know with 4 main bearings the actual bearing stressed are half of what the V8 is. And even in the event the bearing stress is higher, that still isn't directly related to reliability since things like oiling and material and wear life and a dozen other factors contribute to what is considered a "bearing failure". Force by itself is a very basic value that rarely tells much.

Good, you said what I said, and power vs cylinders does not prove anything about reliability and neither does the force on a rod or bearing :D

So is Toyota going to pull the pin on this rollout? Srsly. The Tundras forum has spoken. Next thing you know, some jackass is going to tell me I’ll someday have a cell phone the size of a Cliff bar that I can watch football on and order ammo from on my way to go hunting….

But we have no idea how true that is.... For all we know it has massive bearings, unless I'm missing where their dimensions were stated.

    Blown Engine.....
I WAS going to say that, but then I remembered we have that engine available already in the Lexus LS-500 since late 2017. I’m not aware of issues yet, or if any 3.5 TTV6 has required a tear down rebuild to measure the bearing size…. /sarc

I think we are all forgetting something and that is "what would a couple of mods and some bigger spooly boyz do for the 2022 Tundra" what If this new V6 is built like the 2JZ and its over kill meaning some easy mods could make high reliable horse power and we could see kits 800-1200HP as a bolt on :spending::burnrubber:

at that point it would dwarf any thing the V8 could do since the V8 needs 40k worth of parts to build those numbers. also there's only one company making those parts and yes 40k USD ... Don't for a second think I didn't add them to my shopping cart and dream.

Well, the best ICE engineers in the world (F1) / Mercedes can "only" muster around 1100 HP from a 1.6 liter V6 which is not even remotely streetable and can only last about 4 races and needs special fuel for it to generate those numbers, I don't think the Toyota V6 has a chance in Hell to even remotely come close to that for "street usage with reliability".
