Hey all. New Tundra DC should arrive in a few weeks and was looking for opinions on rustproofing. From the research I've done here I've decided against any type of rubberized undercoating. Was wondering if anyone had experience with the "Rust Check" product?

Fluid Film is popular, and effective. It smells bad after application, but it doesn't last long.

Edit: For clarification, the smell doesn't last long. The Fluid Film itself lasts until you pressure wash it off, so don't hit any carwashes with the underbody spray unless you plan to reapply it.

It's available up here too as a DIY option but it's less popular compared to Rust Check. I used to coat my Taco sliders with it before winter starts with ok results. And yes, it stinks.

I used Rust Check on my 89 Mustang GT . It was a daily driver all year . There wasn’t one speck of rust on it for the 12 years I owned it . I had it done once a year since it was new .

There are many posts on this, try the “google search” on the magnifying glass icon at the top right of the page.
I like Krown rust spray (Canadian made eh) mostly because it is also usefull around the house as a general spray lube. Kind of a 2 for 1 product.

Have you had any rust proofing done there? I looked on facebook and they talk about honeyseal wax protection, I googled it and found this. All comes down to prep and application. I'm beyond crawling underneath myself anymore, lol.

I haven't used them myself yet but will. I have seen the work though and it's really good. They dry ice blast for prep. Not cheap though - probably around $1500 for a Tundra or more, depending on the current condition.

I’ve had previous vehicles Rust Check’d annually, usually late fall, and was very happy with the results.

I DIY’d my ‘16 Tundra with it last fall, and will again this year. (Truck looked way better after last winters salt.) I like that they have a thinner and thicker formulations. The Coat & Protect lasts quite well on truck undercarriage & frames. It’s an easy job, and not too expensive. But what a mess...

Edit to add- tried Fluid Film in I think the second year of ownership. It seemed okay, but the thin RC penetrates and spread better inside doors and panels, IMO. Plus, I can’t stand the smell of FF. Personal preference there I’m sure.

+1 for FluidFilm, easy to DIY. Generally want to avoid things that get really hot like the exhaust though. I live in the rust belt of the US and it's held up really well on multiple cars. It's also safe to apply over existing rust, though it's not a converter.

EDIT: Removed the bit about rubber. Someone responded stating the aerosol can label says it's not safe for rubber. Reading the gallon size formula which requires an air compressor and spray gun, it says safe for oil resistant rubber but may cause swelling in other rubbers. I've personally had no issues with various bushings on multiple cars, but YMMV!

MP - thanks for the heads up. I am close to Edmonton so will check out your recommendation. I'd be curious to know of anyone who had work done there and if it's worth the price ... about 6x that of rust check.

Says right on the can to avoid rubber as it can cause swelling.

regular rubber it can, but i've used it in my doors and havent experienced any swelling on the weather strips on the bottom of the door, but any oil resistant rubber will not be effected by it, which is any of the rubber that is on the undercarriage of the truck. I used woolwax on mine and it's been through 2 winters with zero rust in northeast ohio.

I may have been wrong, and edited my original post above.

Both aerosol can and gallon size formulas can cause swelling potentially. The gallon size is a little different formula, but requires an air compressor and spray gun for application. That stuff is also thicker and lasts longer than the aerosol canned stuff.

Seriously check out their Instagram account. They have people coming with Land Cruisers and Tacomas from Victoria. The before/after is incredible. When I last asked, the single treatment is expected to last about 7 years depending on how the vehicle is used.

I have tried them all... IMO the best overall is Fluid Film for coating and longevity. Next up is Rust Cure 3000 aka Corrosion Free, this stuff lasts a while and it has the 'creeping' factor that Fluid Film lacks, but FF coats better due to the lanolin. Another great product is Rust Check Coat & Protect (green can). It is very similar to FF at half the price.

For convenience I had my truck Krown'd in March, mostly because I just got it and needed a place to spray quick. Overall I'm not overly impressed with the product compared to the ones I've mentioned above. If you can find a place that sprays those products you are gold. I personally DIY, and blast a can (usually Corrosion Free) every once in a while to maintain.

2.5 inch lift, TRD front and rear sway bars, 33 inch Open Country AT3 305/55R20 and dual TRD exhaust.

I am pretty sure line-x has a permanent undercarriage lining that prevents rust. It isn't cheap but it is guaranteed for life.

Has anyone either ordered direct from the manufacturer or found a decent local supplier for Cosmoline RP342 in Canada? Possibly overkill although the product seems to get excellent reviews and is popular with the Tacoma folks.

Sorry no info on that product, but it doesn't seem worth the hassle when Fluid Film is easily available by the gallon at canadian tire

True enough. I have several cans of Fluid Film that need to be used up anyhow.
Apparently the cosmoline doesn't wash off and crap doesn't stick to the wax so thought I'd give it a go on the A arms and other areas that see more road spray. On a side note there is another lanoline based product that doesn't wash off as easily called PB blaster Surface Shield. Available @ US Home Depot. Being on the coast and typically having a longer wet season we can use all the corrosion protection possible.
This guy did a great job of testing many products and seems to like it.

I agree it sounds like a good product.
Just received a reply and it doesn't sound promising...
I typically run down the Oregon Coast every year or two so hopefully if things eventually open up again I'll be grabbing a few cans and give it go.

Thank you for your interest in our product. Unfortunately, we do not export to Canada.

Also a big fan of Woolwax. Customer support is great, free shipping to Canada and the product goes on a little thicker (while still providing some penetrating qualities) than FF which reduces the need to re-apply yearly. They also make a lower viscosity for inside doors/panels and a high viscosity for high road spray areas.

Based on research and personal experience stay well clear of the thick rubbery/tar like coatings that go on thick and dry.
